Talking Finances With Doctors

I'm Asking: Do Your Doctors Talk Money With You?

The sad passing of Elizabeth Edwards reminds us again of the sobering fact that the cost of cancer is no easy price to pay — emotionally, physically, and financially.

But here's a shocking statistic: over half of cancer professionals refrain from mentioning finances when discussing the topic with their patients, according to a report released this year by the Journal of the American Medical Association. This is slightly alarming as patients should be equipped with proper financial guidance during this draining time.

What have your experiences at the doctor been like — do they address money matters with you?

My oldest daughter has many health issues. Many of the treatments, therapies were not covered by insurance. So private pay, or out of pocket has been discussed many times. At one point our health insurance was canceled (our insurance was our policy, not through an employer) and at that point our daughter became uninsurable. She went into an insurance pool and was instantly covered (for free) my medical. For a few years everything was totally covered. She had much better health coverage than the rest of us. Now there are some co-pays, and some of her meds are not covered. But it's still cheaper than what her insurance payment would be each month.

I think doctors usually want to avoid the topic money as most of them are probably members of the top 5% earners' club...
