U.S. Lost 17,000 Jobs in January

News Flash: 17,000 Job Losses in January

The U.S. Department of Labor reported Friday the first decline in employment in four years. Preliminary figures showed January as having the first decline in payrolls since August 2003 but those numbers might be revised. The report also showed the average hours worked in the private sector declined last month so it looks like some companies are still following the trend of cutting hours instead of jobs. President Bush noted Friday's employment figures as a reason for speeding up the passing of the proposed economic stimulus package.

Unemployment benefits are long enough in my opinion. Here at work, and i work for the state of florida department of health, when people leave we just dont fill thier position, it gets absorbed into the existing employees duties, mostly due to budget restraints, thats the states fault, not the presidents.

i've heard about all the job cuts that have been going on and it's a scary thing. as for the whole reduction in hours - umm....i've been working A LOT more hours lately - but my job has me where they want me. i'm a salary employee so that means that i dont get any more money for my over time

Funny he sees it as proof to hand out a one time check but he doesn't see it as proof that he should extend unemployment benefits! He has gotten us into more debt than all the President's before him COMBINED!!! Sad but true!!!

I am so glad I recently found a job, I was laid off in August from a previous position without warning. It is very hard to find a job especially if your trying to make a decent living or looking for a dream job; sometimes you gotta take what you can get. Sad but true.

I still don't see the rebate check working well. How about he cuts back on his ridiculous spending that is causing our nation to go deeper and deeper into debt?
