United Will Charge $25 For Second Bag

News Flash: United Will Charge You For That Extra Baggage

So, you're checking a second bag because you're going on a super long vacation? If you're flying the Friendly Skies your traveling costs will go up another $25 for your extra baggage. The surcharge is a reaction to higher fuel costs and will generate another $100 million in revenue and savings for United Airlines each year. The policy applies to nonrefundable domestic and Canadian economy tickets, and if you're someone who usually pays extra for one overweight suitcase you might as well just pack another bag and avoid the wrinkles. As of May 5 they're doubling the cost of overweight bags from $50 to $100, and if you need more than two bags they'll charge an extra $100 per normal weight bag. I wonder when the other airlines will start making similar moves.

Spirit charges you just to check a bag at all. I think it's 10 dollars a bag if you do it before you fly and then more at the airport.

I always UPS my luggage to where I'm going. It's reliable, fast if you do 2-day or overnight (2-day is always enough for me) and if there ever is a problem, it's insured for how ever much you say it's worth.

I think it's important to point out that airline prices are going up for many reasons. It isn't really because they want to charge more; it's because they have no choice. In fact, they would prefer to be more cost competitive. Fuel is adding increased costs, customers are not willing to pay a few extra dollars for a ticket, and labor costs continue to rise even though they aren't making all that much. Now I am not saying those are all bad things, it's just the way it is. Revenues are increasing somewhat, but overall the airline industry is limping along. That's why you hear so much talk about mergers. Oh, and I know this because my husband works for an airline. :) I, too, would prefer to see airlines attempt to increase their profit margin by charging for extras instead of increasing the price for everyone.

As if it wasn't expensive enough already...

What?? That's a lot of money!! Companies have become incredibly expensive over the last 3 months, I'm not sure if I can blame all of it on fuel, or if it's just a bad excuse for charging customers more..

I prefer they charge extra money for extra bags than charging everybody with additional and "not too explicits" taxes for fuel (well actually a lots of companies already do that anyway). After all, if a plane carries more weight due to extra bags, that requires extra fuel for the plane. Why should everybody in the plane pay for that ? But that's just my opinion.

I think it's a good idea. People take too much stuff! 1 free checked bag per person, all others after that a little extra.

I'm wondering if the other airlines will follow suit, here. I mostly fly Continental, but I mostly check only one bag. Just returned from Pittsburgh on a small Embraer air flight and a fellow passenger said that he was bumped from an earlier flight (as were 5 others) because the plane was so full of checked luggage that it was overweight (Continental)! Said this was his first experience with this. But on vacation travel, we are seeing people with gigantic bags, as if they are moving to their destinations. what's with this?
