The surcharge is a reaction to higher fuel costs and will generate another $100 million in revenue and savings for United Airlines each year. The policy applies to nonrefundable domestic and Canadian economy tickets, and if you're someone who usually pays extra for one overweight suitcase you might as well just pack another bag and avoid the wrinkles. As of May 5 they're doubling the cost of overweight bags from $50 to $100, and if you need more than two bags they'll charge an extra $100 per normal weight bag. I wonder when the other airlines will start making similar moves.
