Using a Cellphone on the Airplane

Do You Turn Your Cellphone Off When You're on the Plane?

I was traveling last weekend and saw a passenger texting on the sly as the airplane took off. The lady next to us became livid and asked the texter to shut his phone off for safety purposes. This makes me wonder if people really know what the true risks of using electronic devices during takeoff and landing are. The Federal Aviation Administration says it's more of a cautionary step since the effect of the emitted radio signals on aircraft is still uncertain. What about you — would you text if you could get away with it or would you shut your phone down before the takeoff.

I switch to "Airplane Mode" which means I can play games and listen to music downloaded to my phone, but I can't make calls, text, or use the internet. I don't think it's a big deal...if I don't answer because I am flying, I will get back to you when the plane lands.

I don't know why it is so hard for people to follow the rules. You are basically saying you are more important than everyone else. You aren't.

Sometimes. But I would keep it on on takeoff and put it on as we descended if I needed to text someone important, like my boyfriend or something. I don't think those risks are true.
