Gimmicky Video Resumes: Yay or Nay?

Graeme Anthony found himself unemployed and decided to do something about it — film an interactive YouTube resume. Watching his video highlights his social media and creative genius. For starters, after a 30 sec intro, Anthony inserted five hyperlinks for viewers to find out more about him. Depending on which one you choose, you can view his video versions of the about me, portfolio, skills, timeline, contact details usually found on paper resumes. The short intro is great because it caters to peoples' short attention span. My favorite is his skills video because it showcases his sense of humor and likeability.

Do you think video resumes are a cool idea? I'm thinking these are great for companies that value creativity or firms that sorely need someone to spice up their social media marketing department. Here's an idea: creating YouTube resumes for school applications.

I work in HR. And I can honestly say that in most jobs, many hiring managers sort through paper resumes first to sift out the folks who don't meet the minimum requirements of a job (or a software program does it for them). They don't look at anything else in that first round of candidate review. In this economy, there are so many submissions for each new job, hiring managers and HR folks don't have a lot of time to comb through supplemental materials beyond a standard (one page only, people!) resume and short cover letter. I would recommend only submitting a video if either a) it's required for the application, or b) you've made it to the interview process, and you have a direct hiring contact that you can send it to as supplemental material. Some creative/viral companies may appreciate material like this, but most companies probably wouldn't even open the link.

Gimmicky anything resumes tend to be a bad idea, IMO. Focus on the CONTENT and print it on high quality paper.
