Wedding Planning Career

Your Two Cents: Would You Want to Be a Wedding Planner?

In her role as a super successful wedding planner Jennifer Lopez's character jokingly says, "Those who can't wed, plan." That's obviously not the case, and pursuing a career in wedding planning surely takes a real love for weddings, an eye for design, and a desire to help others. As with any job, wedding planning has its advantages — like the feeling of accomplishment when your vision comes to life, connecting with a couple, and feeling like you've made a difference in their special day, and its disadvantages — like a hectic work schedule with irregular hours, having to compromise your opinions often, and going through slow business periods. Based on your experience with wedding planners and planning your own wedding, do you think it could be a career for you?

Life is way too short to deal with all that stress. Not for me.

I am a (self-employed) wedding planner already...And though it can be REALLY challenging and stressful sometimes, it's been really rewarding. I do agree that in order to be successful you have to be a little wedding obsessed. It's not for everyone, but it's the perfect career for me!

I'd only do it for low key weddings. I'm not trying to ruin some woman's big day and having her go off the handle on me. I wouldn't take that well at all. I think it would be a fun career if you had nice clients.

I thought I would love to be a wedding planner BUT I am so with whiplash giving up my life for other people just ain't gonna happen. I also work in the hospitality business and dealing with people w/ too much money and time on their hands already drives me a bit crazy. Hopefully I will be able to soon become a event coordinator for a company because I do want to be a planner just not a wedding planner anymore!!

it's not that I wouldn't want to put up with the demands of my clients, it's the fact that I'm already starting to plan my own wedding and I tend to get very overwhelmed about this kind of thing. I can't imagine what I'd be like planning someone else's and having the added pressure that it has to be just right for them b/c they're paying me!

It's a lot harder than it looks.

i use to help coordinate the weddings at the church i went to. that was fun :) but there wasn't a lot of choices. you picked your colors, from a few that were available and the type of flowers and how big the wedding/reception was. we used the same catering company and florist everytime. there weren't any HUGE weddings, they were very nice but smallish and simple. it was a volunteer position and i really enjoyed it. i think i got all the wedding needs out of my system, because when i got married i was ready to elope, lol. i had already done all the things for a wedding that i thought would be fun or pretty and didn't need to do them at my own wedding. that was enough for me. i did it for almost a year.

I didn't even want to plan my own wedding (I wanted to elope but my hubby didn't), so there's no way I could plan someone else's. That's pretty much at the top of my "nightmare jobs" list!

I am a wedding photographer and love what I do. I often find myself helping the Bride and Groom plan other aspects of their wedding as well though because I have been there and done that so many times! I love it!

I used to want to be an event planner and handled most of the events for the company I worked for. But, I would have NEVER wanted to be a wedding planner. Take all the stress and change of a normal event and throw crazy emotions into the mix and no. thank. you.

No freakin' way. As fun as it sounds to plan parties, there's no way I'd want to work nights and weekends, cater to high-maintenance bridezillas, and coordinate several different vendors over whom I have exactly zero control.

I've thought about it on more than one occasion and actually went to a seminar on "Becoming a Wedding Planner" (it was useless), but if dating Matthew McConaughey is job perk....SIGN ME UP!
