Wedding Registry Tips

Savvy Community: Two Musts For Your Wedding Registry

Couples put care into selecting the items on their registry, and there's a lot to consider: Price range, stores to register at and how to share your registry info with guests. I recently asked readers for registry tips and Deidre shared a gem.

If you're building a home together, register for two things — furniture, and gift cards. Of course, no one will actually buy you furniture as a wedding gift. But you will love using the gift cards on top of the store's completion discount to outfit your new place once the wedding's over!

If you are planning a wedding, or have planned one in the past, I want to know your secrets! Help future brides out by posting your tips and ideas in our How Do You Save? group. Your own precious tips could be featured on the site and help tons of other savvy brides plan their own dream weddings!

Not necessarily true, kimmieb124. My then-fiance and I were living together before we married and had bought some furniture together. But we were in a small apartment and looking to upgrade to a bigger home after we married. The registry helped us fill out on pieces that we either upgraded (just like you said!) or hadn't gotten around to purchasing yet. For example, we already had a great dining table and chairs, but with our registry we were able to pick up a gorgeous buffet later on. It really helped because we definitely needed a place to keep all our new china and glassware as well!

The furniture tip only works if you're not already cohabitating. My husband and I did not need any new furniture until we bought a larger house a couple of years after getting married. We registered for some things we wanted to upgrade. For example, even though we had pans, we registered for a new, nicer set and we registered for nicer towels and sheets than what we currently had. We loved getting gift cards and put them towards some of these upgraded items from our registry.
