What's a Bottleneck?

Definition: Bottleneck

People and procedures that make you a less-efficient and more-frustrated worker. Almost always these are highly ineffective and unnecessary hurdles, and your life would be easier and happier if they didn't exist. Example: Your supervisor has to approve your project, but you're much more knowledgeable about the subject. She has no valuable feedback because she doesn't have the experience to comment on this situation. Your deadline is quickly approaching, and the time you need for finishing touches is spent explaining your project topic to your supervisor. She is a bottleneck.

This is exactly the reason I have resigned my current job and start a new one next week. There were too many instances like the ones described and the last one was the one that broke the camel's back. My new job will be a much better fit for my talents and interests.

To get through the bottlenecks, you have to break the bottle. I find if you speak to them like you believe you know they understand it, very few people will admit they don't. Maybe it's an English thing.Meh.

My job is full of bottlenecks. I manage a design team, and we're always dependent on someone else to approve the work. We may have a month for a project where we spend 3 days preparing the work, it sits around for 25 more days and then all of a sudden has to be changed completely and finalized in the last two days. Day in day out, like clockwork. I can relate!! :)

My job is all about deadlines. They want us to document every last thing and track every single bloody file. It's a nightmare. How am I supposed to get anything done? Got to love red tape.

I have dealt with some clients (not necessarily at this job) that think that they know more about my job then me. I don't doubt what they do, don't put it back on me. I didn't go to six years of Evil Medical school to be called Mister thank you very much.

My bottleneck right now is my temporary supervisor - my fabulous boss retired and now I'm forced to explain things that my old boss just understood or already knew.
