What to Do When I'm Unemployed

The Company Men Producer Gives Advice For People Who Are Laid Off

In my interview with John Wells, the producer of The Company Men, he gave some savvy advice for those who are experiencing unemployment:

I can tell you what I've heard from people over and over again who have been through it. The first thing was to accept the help of everyone around you and turn to your family, your friends, the community that you have, and use that as a way to gather your friends. Everybody who goes through it is shocked when it first happens, and those are the people who will pull you through. It's a good place to find out how much more love, care, family, and community that you have in your life than you think you have.

And then second is to be realistic about the length of time it's going to take and the humility it's going to take to search for another job in this market. Maybe you'll have to look at the value of your home and realize that it doesn't matter how much you've got in it or how much you were making before, it's what the market is in now. Just try and get working no matter what you're doing now, take on something that keeps you busy, talk to friends, stay involved, and don't just sit and wait in hopes of securing what you had before, you may eventually secure what you had before, but it probably won't be right out at the gate.
