As a boss, I disagree with the statement that the fate of your career is in the hands of your boss. My managers are completely in control of their own careers and can make their own decisions. My role is to guide the ship and keep it from turning over. I have been disappointed by employees that seem to think my role is to "get them promoted" or "get them to the next step". This is their responsibility. I provide the tools they need to be successful, support them as needed, and give guidance when it's called for. Your success is no one's responsibility but your own.
