Would You Quit If a Co-Worker Earned More For the Same Job?

Salary isn't a topic that typically comes up among co-workers and most of you would like to keep it that way. But if you discovered someone was being paid much more for doing a similar job, you may actually be happy the topic finally surfaced.

It's rumored that Tori Spelling, aka Donna Martin, has backed away from reprising her role on the new 90210 because she found out that Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth's contracts were paying them more. Would you react like Tori and turn your back on your job if your employer was underpaying you compared to your co-workers?

I feel that salary is subjective to your degrees, past experience, expertise, etc. and that I can't be compared with someone who may have the same job, making more or less. In short, if I ever feel unsatisfied with my salary given my credentials, that's my issue. But should I be mad if my new co-worker makes a certain amount more? Probably not - I don't have a degree and our past experiences in other jobs aren't the exact same.

There are a LOT of people w/the same position I have and they make LOTS more than I do. Part of that is due to seniority and part of it is due to the fact that many of them negotiated their salary before they accepted the position. Problem w/that is, they don't do enough work the validate their salary, which annoys me. So, I would definitely have a talk w/my manager and if we can't come to an agreement of some sort, then it's time for me to move on. No need to do work and not be properly compensated.

My first job was a cashier at a fabric/craft store and I was paid the least. I found out that the dumbest, most unreliable cashier was getting paid over a dollar more because she had kids and a family to take care of. I QUIT! But that was a lame job so quitting wasn't a big deal.Presently, I would make the best case before looking for a new job.

i think that a big part of salary comes down to what you do for the group. i was really upset at my last job because they wouldn't give me a raise that i deserved because there was another girl who was 'at my level' and if they gave me a raise they would have to give her one too - the diff is that i had more responsibility, i had been there longer and i was better than her...yet that's not how they saw the situation - so i left.

I know for a fact that each employee's salary should be confidential. I would be offended if I earned more than someone and they went crying for a raise off my sweat and tears. Before you start searching for a job think about how much it cost for you to live. When you land a job negotiate your salary and went you get it either work your ass off to get a raise or deal with it don’t go complaining. And sometimes it’s not about the pay it’s about the experience.

It would really depend on the circumstances. If the person had paid their dues at the company and you just started than it is understandable that they would be making more money. If you both started at the same time than I would speak with my boss and find out the scoop. You have to be careful on how you found out though, salaries should not be an open conversation in the workplace. If the people in my office knew what I was getting paid they would probably be pissed but I am the secret keeper of our boss so I am probably being paid off to some extent.

I think the 90210 reunion could do with or without Tori. Shannon and Jennie were leading actresses in the show and therefore must-haves. So, yeah, they don't have to pay Tori equally.

Yes, and I have done so more than once! I get it that its in their best interest to pay you as little as they can get away with, since it is a business... And I have never hated on my coworkers for getting more money than me since they did have the balls to negotiate or hold out for more money... But in the end, I just figured that I was being ripped off for my hard work and it was such a turn off that I couldnt stay any longer. Even though I know in the end its my fault for not speaking up!

I'd probably stay if my boss had a good argument to back-up the discrepancy, and I'd ask what I could do to get my own rise. But if I was unhappy with the outcome, I'd leave after making the best case for the raise.

I would talk to my boss, but I would also be dusting off my resume.

I would talk to my employer about the reasons behind the discrepancy. I know our salaries differ based on how long we've working at the company. But if the reasons are unacceptable (if there is a reason at all), I would ask for a raise and retroactive pay.
