Are You Passionate About Your Job?

Everyone dreams of finding the perfect job — one where going to work in the morning feels more like a treat than a chore. But we also know that in reality, sometimes work is just . . . work.

It’s common advice to laid-off job seekers, especially during the recession, to find a passion and build a career out of that. But New York Times writer Alina Tugend thinks that may be unrealistic, and that by placing so much emphasis on being “passionate” about work, we’re really just setting ourselves up for disappointment. What about you? Are you passionate about your job?

This is a very interesting question. I recently attended a session with a passion coach. He said most commonly, people think they need to leave their current job and pour all their time into their passion. I actually had just done this (left my job to write a novel). However he said this idea that passion has to be an all-consuming thing is a myth, and that most people are embracing a dual track where they work part time and do their passion part time. We see this all the time with Etsy stores, part-time musicians, Partylite etc. It was a great relief for me to hear this because spending all my time writing, even though it is my passion, was lonely and overwhelming. So I got a job I liked and that makes me feel talented, and then I do my passion, writing on the side. It works!

Teaching is my life. I would never do anything else and be as happy as I am doing this job. I am proud of what I do every single day, and I am glad to wake up and know that I am living my dream, that is teaching high school.

I'm passionate about my job in theory, but not in the day to day actuality of my job. I am doing exactly what I set out to do, but I'm a little disillusioned by the realities of what my job actually entails compared to what I imagined. I often think about getting into something else, but I'm still trying to figure out what would be a better fit.

I like my job, but I'm not passionate about it. I am, however, passionate about the field in which I work. I'm hoping this job will lead to one that I'm more passionate about.

I said yes; I'm passionate about the goals and purpose of my work but not necessarily the day-to-day grind. But I don't think passion in necessary . . . a friend from school summed it up best when he told me that being passionate about your job is a bonus, but if you can't have it, just remember that having the job is the means to an end, following your passions after your 9-5.

Absolutely I'm passionate about my job and it's not for the salary. I work in the field of nursing where you get to save people's lives everyday. My SO says he could never do my job.

No, I'm not passionate about my current job but I always maintain high standards so my employer would never know.

I'm passionate about the field I work in, but my job often isn't that great. I like that I help people every day, but sometimes the workload is very heavy and there is a lot of stress.
