Your Two Cents: Have You Ever Made a Late Payment?

Making punctual payments on your debts has a huge impact in maintaining (or achieving) a high credit score, and tardy payments can leave a negative dent in your credit. Have you ever been late in making a payment?

laluna - what a frustrating situation! I would have been so mad if I'd gone in person to take care of my bill early, only to return and have them say "sorry sucker we got ya!" Ugh. I hate how these companies can change the rules on you. The fine print usually says "subject to change without notification" but they ALL say that. What are you supposed to do, keep your money in your mattress? Use pay phones? Convert to Amish?

One of my debts is paid late every month, they changed my due date and it fell on the week i have my lowest pay. I rang them and they wouldnt change it, i was annoyed because i made sure it fell on that week when i signed the contract. They only charged me a late fee that first week though. Another time i was going away so i went into the company to pay my account a week or so early (due on the 1st of the month). I got back two weeks later to find i owed them that months payment because according them it was just an 'extra' payment i had made being it was made before the due date. That's the first and only time i've asked to be passed on to someone 'higher up'...

Yes but it wasn't my fault! The company forgot to send me my monthly bill via mail. Grrrr!

Sure, I've been late with payments. Life is full of unexpected events, no matter how carefully you plan.

nope. One time I thought I was going to be late so I called AMEX ahead of time to tell them the payment had been made but I dunno if the 3 day wait period would hold it up or not. They said that was fine. And it was.

I'm never late on loans or credit card payments. I have been late on utility bills, but I've found that my lateness on utility bills has never been reported.

no, I have never been late. But I was under the impression that unless it is 30days past due then it won't show up on your credit report. I think that generally they don't report to the credit agency if you are just 1 or 2 days late.

Never ever, I'm kind of a control freak when it comes to finances...complete with Excel spreadsheets, an at home "inbox" and "outbox" for mail, e-mail notifications, and archived .PDF docs from the last 5 years. Kind of drives my husband crazy but my credit score definitely helped us get our low interest rate for our home loan!

Only once. I paid online and it turned out the system was down. Of course I didn't write down the receipt number so I couldn't prove it, so I was SOL. It sure made me better about that "print this page for your records" bit!

in the past when i was much less responsible about things, i made a couple of late payments, but luckily that's all far far in the past and i've been able to work towards fixing things. it's hard when you're young and you don't realize that your actions will impact your credit in the future - but now i'm more aware of things and i try to set reminders for myself to make the payments.

I ALWAYS make payments on time. Except for this one time where they didn't send my bill to me. But never again.

Yeah but I called them and they waived the fee. I am very compulsive about making payments on time!

Ive never made a late payment. Once I went over my limit and they dinged me. I didnt even know that was possible.
