Kiefer Talks Torture and Getting Turned on - 24 Is Back!

Kiefer Sutherland and the rest of the cast of 24 took the stage at this morning's Fox TCA panel, and while the questions kept coming back to whether or not the show condones torture, they managed to get a few good jokes in. After this week's four-hour season premiere and last month's TV movie 24: Redemption, are you on board with the new season? The show's producers and cast seem hopeful that a little break has made the show and Jack Bauer reinvigorated and ready to excite us. Here were some highlights from Kiefer at the press presentation:

On Jack this season: "We felt that Jack had great contempt for the Senate investigation because many of the things he was asked to do over the previous six seasons were ordered by the government (president). He is certainly questioning many of the things he has been asked to do, either ordered or on his own. He is wrestling with his own history and whether or not he is the kind of person who should have been asked to do these sorts of things. This inner struggle is something he carries for all 24 episodes."
On torture: "The use of torture was a dramatic device used to show urgency, not meant to validate this kind of behavior for the real world . . . In reality less than 10 percent of information they get from situations like this are helpful, but it is a television show and we are driving a plot forward and we use it for dramatic effect. But it does raise question of right and wrong . . . From my perspective it has always been literally a dramatic device to show you the urgency of a situation. There was just no alternative. One of the most moving scenes for me was killing my boss - we’re not condoning that, it was just part of the show. It’s as simple as that."
On keeping in shape: “Try to work out as much as you can in the off-season because it's tricky to maintain in the on-season. You do what you can with the time you’ve got like everyone. I run, and lucky for me during the day when I have to go to work, I run a lot there too. On an emotional level, fear and panic is my workout through the entire season . . .This has been an unbelievable gift . . . There is no specific regimen I have because our schedule changes so much."
On his 24 romance with the new FBI agent, played by Annie Wersching: "Given the situation I guess romances do develop over 24 hours. I think born of the respect [they have for each other] there is a tension that develops. Watching Annie do her first fight sequence I went, 'You know, that kinda turned me on too,' so it wasn't hard."

On the show as a phenomenon: "My name is not Kiefer anymore, it's Jack, and people talk to me like that . . . this character had these unbelievable characteristics but is really human. Nothing in 24 is black and white, it lives in a gray area and people were receptive at that time to accept something like that. It’s something that I am continually trying to figure out."
On the show being realistic: "In regards to the not sleeping, we’ve shot 24 for 17-18 hours and can imagine staying up for 24, but in season one he does fall asleep. There are aspects and times when we can play with that, but I haven’t been that focused on it the past few years. One time I walked into a restroom, but they cut it out. It’s not for lack of trying."
On shooting in Africa: "I went down to South Africa with a lot of prejudgments, I was very strongly against apartheid, I was aware that even with new government an unbelievable portion of the population is living in poverty and that population is [mostly] black . . . But when I started working with these nine children I was startled by how aware they are and how much joy they have. They took us into the townships with no running water or paved roads, and it made me take a serious look at myself and some of the things I might complain about . . . How unbelievably warm and affectionate these children were was really inspiring."

Leighton Meester shows off her racy side for the upcoming December issue of GQ, though exclusive video of her shoot will be online Friday before the issue hits newsstands on November 24. We've seen Leighton go scantily clad for her latest music video, but it's still a jolt to see the same actress who plays buttoned-up Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl looking so different. Leighton may understandably be trying to change her image as she embarks on a solo singing career, but tell us what you think - is this super sexy or too much?

Britney Lives the Life Aquatic With Sean and Jayden

Britney Spears continued to enjoy the sights of Australia today as she brought Sean Preston and Jayden James out to explore the Sydney Aquarium and a wildlife park. Her boys only arrived Down Under last week, but they've already had tons of fun from their yachting afternoon to swim time with Britney and Jason Trawick. Britney performed her second of four shows in the city last night, and she has two days off before she takes the stage again. She's spending some of her downtime playing with her new "It's Britney!" iPhone app and checking out fan photos. Britney's also gearing up for the release of her greatest hits album on November 24th, and MTV is dedicating time before it hits shelves to a retrospective of her career.

Tina Keeps Her Sense of Humor Intact on The Late Show

Tina Fey waved to fans as she headed into The Late Show studios last night in NYC. She's out making the rounds to promote 30 Rock's fourth season, which kicks off tonight with another Steve Buscemi cameo! Tina was hilarious, as usual, as she and Dave discussed what it takes to get her ready for a magazine cover shoot and being a late bloomer who didn't lose her virginity until she was 24. Britney's Singles Collection Is Coming Our Way After the Circus

Britney Spears continued enjoying time at home in LA, picking up a cartload of goodies from the supermarket yesterday before handing out tickets to last night's show at the Staples Center. It was a homecoming of sorts for Brit, after her travels around the world and across the country for her Circus tour. She doesn't have too much time to linger around the house, as she'll hit the stage in San Diego tonight before Las Vegas this weekend. Then it's off to Australia for Britney and her crew, and they'll wrap things up with a last performance in Brisbane on November 24 - the same day Jive Records will release the Britney Spears Singles Collection, a greatest hits album commemorating her 10 years in the business that also features one new song, which will hit airwaves on September 29.

Patrick Dempsey Revs Some Engines

Patrick Dempsey was in Le Mans, France yesterday to practice for the city's annual 24 Hour race this Saturday. He and two teammates plan to compete in the marathon competition tomorrow, with the goal of raising money for children born with heart defects. Patrick usually fits his need for speed into his work schedule when he's filming Grey's Anatomy, but now that his show's on hiatus until next season he's even more able to dedicate himself to the track.

SMG's Got Herself a New Pair of Shades

Sarah Michelle Gellar shopped for new sunglasses yesterday afternoon in LA. Her baby bump was barely visible underneath her stylish gathered skirt and top - get her look here. She still has a few more months to go before Fall, when her new TV show airs on HBO and her special delivery, rumored to be a girl, is due. Her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. will have to wait a little longer for his appearance on the small screen since his pilot wasn't picked up, but he'll be costarring on 24 in January.

The Transformers 2 Party Kicks Off in Japan

Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox brought their big smiles overseas to premiere Transformers 2 in Japan today. Megan showed off plenty of leg on the red carpet, making sure to stand out among her handsome costars Shia and Josh Duhamel. The movie isn't released here in the states until June 24 which means the fun is just getting started as the stars take their sequel around the world.

Joshua and Kiefer Introduce Us to Fox's Fall Schedule

Joshua Jackson was up bright and early in NYC yesterday to attend the Fox Upfronts presentation. Fringe has already been renewed for another season but you can check out the full Fall schedule here and get a peek at some of the new shows. Other Fox stars like David Boreanaz and Gordon Ramsay joined in the party - even Kiefer Sutherland came by and made an awkward joke on stage about his arrest last week. Last night's 24 finale left us with quite the cliffhanger, but we already know that Jack Bauer will be back next year.
