Muslim Groups Upset with 24's Lack of Imagination

Keifer Sutherland took a break from filming 24 (at least we think he's on a break, but he is still rocking the Jack Bauer signature faded black sweatshirt and scowl, so who knows) to enjoy the Santa Monica sun the other day. The sixth season of 24 started off with its fill of excitement, but not everyone is so happy with the show.

Musim-American groups are upset at the show's constant portrayal of Muslim people as terrorists. The Council on American-Islam Relations released a statement saying, "Repeated association of acts of terrorism with Islam will only serve to increase anti-Muslim prejudice." In response Fox has said, "24 is a heightened drama about anti-terrorism. Any individual, family, or group (ethnic or otherwise) that engages in violence is not meant to be typical." We're hard pressed to think of a Muslim non-terrorist in the show's history (not counting this season, because there's no guarantees yet), but hopefully Fox will find a way to counteract these stereotypes. After all, it's hard to stay mad at the people who brought us Jack Bauer.

Kiefer is a Hard Working Cowboy

We've been counting down to 24 and thanks to Men's Vogue we can get a little Kiefer fix until the show returns on January 14th. Kiefer spoke about working hard, making an impact and loving the response fans have to 24. He also addressed the drinking issue. When asked about a Rolling Stone article that pinned him as a drunk, he said,

"24 must make itself while I am out in a bar somewhere. We have made 128 episodes. That's the equivalent of 65 films in a five-and-a-half-year period. That is as much as most actors' entire career. I maybe deserve to get drunk just once in a while. But I have never once been late for a day's work."

Good point Kiefer. Besides, looks like you got past this Christmas without taking down any trees. 24 will be back January 14th - until then, more of Kiefer playing the cowboy so read more

Countdown to 24

The cast of 24 turned out in full force on Monday for the show's Season 5 DVD release party, and the actors have plenty of reasons to celebrate. The sixth season kicks off Jan. 14 with a two-night, four-hour premiere!!! According to 24 star Roger Cross, who we talked to at the FOX Billboard Music Awards in Vegas, there's also still discussions of filming a 24 movie during the show's next off season. Even he's floored by what happens in the season premiere; here's what he had to say:

"In the first four hours, they’re gonna throw a lot at you. I’ve thought before that they just can’t surprise us anymore, but they’re really gonna throw the kitchen sink out there this time. It's nuts. There are some creative minds back there and they’re working hard."

Roger was a pleasure to meet and he made us even more excited about the upcoming season. As if the news of Chad Lowe and now Rick Schroder joining the cast wasn't more than enough to excite us. Kiefer Talks Torture and Getting Turned on - 24 Is Back!

Kiefer Sutherland and the rest of the cast of 24 took the stage at this morning's Fox TCA panel, and while the questions kept coming back to whether or not the show condones torture, they managed to get a few good jokes in. After this week's four-hour season premiere and last month's TV movie 24: Redemption, are you on board with the new season? The show's producers and cast seem hopeful that a little break has made the show and Jack Bauer reinvigorated and ready to excite us. Here were some highlights from Kiefer at the press presentation:

On Jack this season: "We felt that Jack had great contempt for the Senate investigation because many of the things he was asked to do over the previous six seasons were ordered by the government (president). He is certainly questioning many of the things he has been asked to do, either ordered or on his own. He is wrestling with his own history and whether or not he is the kind of person who should have been asked to do these sorts of things. This inner struggle is something he carries for all 24 episodes."
On torture: "The use of torture was a dramatic device used to show urgency, not meant to validate this kind of behavior for the real world . . . In reality less than 10 percent of information they get from situations like this are helpful, but it is a television show and we are driving a plot forward and we use it for dramatic effect. But it does raise question of right and wrong . . . From my perspective it has always been literally a dramatic device to show you the urgency of a situation. There was just no alternative. One of the most moving scenes for me was killing my boss - we’re not condoning that, it was just part of the show. It’s as simple as that."
On keeping in shape: “Try to work out as much as you can in the off-season because it's tricky to maintain in the on-season. You do what you can with the time you’ve got like everyone. I run, and lucky for me during the day when I have to go to work, I run a lot there too. On an emotional level, fear and panic is my workout through the entire season . . .This has been an unbelievable gift . . . There is no specific regimen I have because our schedule changes so much."
On his 24 romance with the new FBI agent, played by Annie Wersching: "Given the situation I guess romances do develop over 24 hours. I think born of the respect [they have for each other] there is a tension that develops. Watching Annie do her first fight sequence I went, 'You know, that kinda turned me on too,' so it wasn't hard."

On the show as a phenomenon: "My name is not Kiefer anymore, it's Jack, and people talk to me like that . . . this character had these unbelievable characteristics but is really human. Nothing in 24 is black and white, it lives in a gray area and people were receptive at that time to accept something like that. It’s something that I am continually trying to figure out."
On the show being realistic: "In regards to the not sleeping, we’ve shot 24 for 17-18 hours and can imagine staying up for 24, but in season one he does fall asleep. There are aspects and times when we can play with that, but I haven’t been that focused on it the past few years. One time I walked into a restroom, but they cut it out. It’s not for lack of trying."
On shooting in Africa: "I went down to South Africa with a lot of prejudgments, I was very strongly against apartheid, I was aware that even with new government an unbelievable portion of the population is living in poverty and that population is [mostly] black . . . But when I started working with these nine children I was startled by how aware they are and how much joy they have. They took us into the townships with no running water or paved roads, and it made me take a serious look at myself and some of the things I might complain about . . . How unbelievably warm and affectionate these children were was really inspiring."

Jennifer Plays With Demi, Emily, and Naomi in NYC

Jennifer Aniston was in LA last week for a wedding with her stylist, but she popped up in NYC last night to take part in the annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway. She joined a handful of actor couples for the evening, including Emily Blunt and John Krasinski as well as Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts. Demi Moore was a lot more covered up than her recent W cover, as she posed with husband Ashton Kutcher. Jennifer joined her fellow thespians onstage to sing "Yellow Submarine" and take part in the hastily-written theater exercise, which was held to benefit arts in education programs in public schools. She took her bow next to a similarly-dressed Brooke Shields before moving on for some after-hours fun with Ashton and Demi.

Leighton Meester Strips Down For GQ - Super Sexy or Too Much?

Leighton Meester shows off her racy side for the upcoming December issue of GQ, though exclusive video of her shoot will be online Friday before the issue hits newsstands on November 24. We've seen Leighton go scantily clad for her latest music video, but it's still a jolt to see the same actress who plays buttoned-up Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl looking so different. Leighton may understandably be trying to change her image as she embarks on a solo singing career, but tell us what you think - is this super sexy or too much?

Britney Lives the Life Aquatic With Sean and Jayden

Britney Spears continued to enjoy the sights of Australia today as she brought Sean Preston and Jayden James out to explore the Sydney Aquarium and a wildlife park. Her boys only arrived Down Under last week, but they've already had tons of fun from their yachting afternoon to swim time with Britney and Jason Trawick. Britney performed her second of four shows in the city last night, and she has two days off before she takes the stage again. She's spending some of her downtime playing with her new "It's Britney!" iPhone app and checking out fan photos. Britney's also gearing up for the release of her greatest hits album on November 24th, and MTV is dedicating time before it hits shelves to a retrospective of her career.

Jennifer Aniston Brings Her Little Green Bikini Back to Mexico

Jennifer Aniston soaked up the sun yesterday in her familiar two-piece while vacationing in Mexico. She headed South after appearing in 24 Hour Plays in NYC earlier this week, as she enjoys one of her favorite places for a quick getaway. Jennifer has spent time in Cabo with everyone from John Mayer to her big group of A-list pals, but it looks like she managed to find some alone time to sunbathe during this particular trip.
