Diddy Grows As A Raisin in the Sun

Diddy looked quite debonair at the NYC premiere of A Raisin in the Sun last night. He brought the movie to Sundance last month with the whole cast, and we'll all get to see it when it premieres this Monday on ABC - check out a first look at it here. The music and fashion mogul first played the part on Broadway, which was was tough on the Diddy. He said, "We were all so in it, it was painful. I have ulcers. If I'm doing something right, they'll flare up, and they flared up." But making the movie was easier, "Going up to Toronto was good, walking away from all my businesses, cutting off the Blackberry, not being able to be found. … It was the best thing for me to do ... I wanna shock the world. People can say whatever they want about me as an actor, but I want them to see the growth." Here's to taking Diddy seriously, despite the fact he recently coined the term "bitchassness" on Making the Band 4. Just saying.

First Look: ABC's A Raisin in the Sun

Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun is already a true theater classic: It was the first play written by an African American woman to be performed on Broadway, and the original cast - including Sidney Poitier and current Oscar nominee Ruby Dee - was recognized with four Tony Awards. More than 40 years later, a 2004 revival starring Sean Combs, Phylicia Rashad, and Audra McDonald took home two Tony awards of its own.

Now, the majority of the Broadway cast has reunited for a television adaptation for ABC, which will air next Monday, Feb. 25. The movie has already screened at Sundance to positive reviews, and I'm eager to check it out for myself.

The play focuses on a family struggling to make a life for themselves in Chicago in the 1950s. Matriarch Lena Younger (Rashad) starts the story in motion, using money from her late husband's life insurance check to purchase a house in an all-white neighborhood - a move that isn't received well by their new neighbors. Meanwhile, the rest of the money ends up in the hands of Lena's son Walter (Combs), but instead of protecting and saving it to send his sister to medical school, he ends up tied up in a scam that could destroy the family's ambitions. Diddy Just Wants You to Vote

In case you've been living under a rock, today is Super Tuesday, and even the stars are coming out of the woodwork to encourage you to vote. Yesterday Diddy headed to a photocall for his new movie A Raisin in the Sun in NYC, but he also took the time to get political during a phone interview with the AP, stressing the importance of voting in the primaries today, especially for all the young'uns. He said:

"If we want to stop the war, if we want to get the economy better, I think that young people need to understand they have to take matters into their own hands. It is really like waking up a sleeping giant. I didn't really want to get in the political game but I wanted to see young people become empowered. That's where my attention is at. To have an African-American man and a woman in, it's going to go down in history as the most historical election," he said. "And I think that young people will have a hand in the result."

Diddy and His Costars Bring Their Raisin Into The Sun

I owe Diddy an apology. I've been giving him some flack over the past couple of days that he is only at Sundance to promote his vodka, though he is in fact in town to premiere a pretty big film at the festival, the newest version of A Raisin in the Sun, alongside Phylicia Rashad, John Stamos, and Audra McDonald. To be fair, he did spend a good amount of time with that vodka of his. Heh. While at the festival, he talked about being involved in such an important project. He said:

On his first lead movie role: "This a historical moment for me, my first starring role in a movie...Some of the audience is going to want to see did I do good or did I fall flat on my face?"
On the film: "Sometimes people come to a place and don't expect to get the message...This generation, they come for entertainment ... then they realize, 'oh man, this movie is really touching. It's making me really appreciate my family."'
On moving from Broadway to film:"Broadway truly prepared me. It made me really go for it...I was like, I came here to get with it and tell a story. I have a long way to go ... but I'm swimming, baby."

Luckily for us, their Raisin in the Sun will also premiere February 25 on ABC, so we'll all get to see Diddy's acting chops. Until then, I'm sure he shared a few of his party pointers with his costars to celebrate their film.

"American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks' first album is due in November, the Associated Press reports; her first single, "Tattoo," will be released Aug. 27.

Could This Be Fashion Week's Wildest Manicure?

Nail art just jumped into another stratosphere, thanks to work by CND's Kristina Estabrooks. For the Binetti show, she created a Cubism-inspired manicure that created the appearance of a slimmer nail. Using CND polish in Blackjack as a base, she "slim-lined" the nail tips with Raisin in the Sun and Bloodline polishes. The slim-lining technique involves leaving a little space between the cuticle and polish; in this case, it created a duo-tone look. To set off the manicures, models wore unique accessories handcrafted from mirrors, feathers, and broken glass. Time will tell, but this could turn out to be Fall 2011's most unusual manicure.

Back in my vegetarian phase during college, my mom always said, "If you don't eat beef, you won't get enough iron." While it is a great source of this valuable mineral, red meat is not the only meat that contains iron. Chicken, turkey, and seafood such as oysters, tuna, and salmon are also high in iron. When it comes to vegetarian sources, beans, leafy greens, nuts, egg yolks, potatoes with the skin, and dried fruits can help you reach your recommended daily intake (RDI). The human body needs iron to make hemoglobin, which helps carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body, and an adult woman should get 18 milligrams of iron daily.
