Johnny Depp Makes a Dapper Appearance at His Rum Diary Premiere

Johnny Depp dressed up for the premiere of The Rum Diary at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art last night. He joined costars Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, and Giovanni Ribisi on the red carpet and later at the Chateau Marmont afterparty. Johnny spoke about the movie, which opens in the US two weeks from today, and how it was the brainchild of his friendship with the late author Hunter S. Thompson. Johnny said of The Rum Diary, "It started out as sort of a dream project for Hunter Thompson and myself - it's something Hunter suggested we do, so we started on that road many years ago. When I lost my partner Hunter in 2005, I got refueled and said, 'You know I've got to do this for Hunter, I got to make this happen.' I dove in as deep as I could, followed through, that's what it's all about - we're all here for Hunter." The evening was Johnny's second at the Chateau this week, as he also attended an art opening with friends Jordi Molla and Mr. Brainwash a couple days ago.

Battle: Los Angeles - Not Worth Fighting For

You're already privy to everything you need to know about Battle: Los Angeles. It has aliens. It has explosions. It has Aaron Eckhart using his most gruff voice to lead a platoon to protect Los Angeles against said aliens and said explosions. All that can be gleaned from the trailer, and unfortunately, the full experience doesn't go much deeper than the preview, leaving us a film with a lot of bark and no bite.

Set in the not-so-distant future of August 2011, the film takes us to - wait for it - Los Angeles, where Marine staff sergeant Michael Nantz (Eckhart) is ready to be discharged after 20 years of service and a recent stint in Iraq that cost him the lives of a few of his men, not to mention the respect from the rest of his platoon. But Michael is forced to change his plans and rise to the occasion when major cities around the globe fall under alien attack, and LA is next on the hit parade.

The first fifteen minute minutes of the film are a feeble attempt to connect the audience to the characters they're about to spend two hours with, but the introductions are glossed over so quickly that it's hard to care about which Marines are getting blown up and which are still fighting to save the city. Michael's need to prove himself as a leader is meant to be a major conflict, but he's so dry and brusque that his feats of courage aren't as fun to watch when you don't feel any attachment to the character.

Director Jonathan Liebesman uses every trick in the book for the events that follow. Shaky hand-held camera work is meant to make you feel like you're a part of the action, but it only gave me a headache. A couple of civilians and children are thrown into the mix to make the film hit closer to home (it doesn't). Michelle Rodriguez shows up to act as the film's token tough chick, a role she can probably play in her sleep. Even the occasional joke referencing "extraterritorials" or lines about kicking some alien butt provide cheap laughs, but feel forced and tired.

The movie is chock-full of gratuitous fight scenes as the robotic-looking aliens and their advanced weapon system wreak havoc on the city of angels. The aliens look cool enough, but the story of what they're doing on earth or where they come from is barely touched upon. With little backstory on the marines and no mystery behind the unexpected enemy, Battle: Los Angeles is only marginally more interesting than watching a video game that you aren't playing.

There's something to be said for a mindless blockbuster, but in an age where films like District 9 have pushed the limits of sci-fi action movies, why play it safe? Explosions and special effects can only go so far without a real story to illustrate, making Battle: LA an utterly mediocre movie that fails to push the limits.

James, Natalie, and More Triumph at the Independent Spirit Awards

This evening's Independent Spirit Awards in LA gave Hollywood another chance to celebrate the best actors and films of the year. Many stars looked amazing on the red carpet, including lovely ladies like Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman, and Jennifer Lawrence. It's the last show before the Oscars - make sure to print out Buzz's ballot to pick your winners for tomorrow - but not all of the usual suspects of this year's award season went home winners today. Pregnant and glowing Natalie did seize the best actress statue for her ballerina role in Black Swan, but unlike at many other shows, it was James Franco who was crowned best actor for 127 Hours. He headed into the press room after accepting his honor, and revealed a few hints about what's in store at the Academy Awards.

This show was full of A-list presenters, like a side-swept Nicole Kidman and Jeremy Renner. Twilight's Anna Kendrick was alongside How I Met Your Mother star and director of the upcoming Happythankyoumoreplease Josh Radnor. A Chanel-clad Naomi Watts, who attended with Liev Schreiber, took the stage with Ewan McGregor. James made the rounds to chat with Natalie's director, Darren Aronofsky, and Diego Luna. There were plenty of adorable couples in attendance, too, as Nicole spent time with her husband, Keith Urban, and Jon Hamm stayed close to his girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt. Nominee Annette Bening was next to Warren Beatty, while pals Jeremy and Mark Ruffalo caught up. Rabbit Hole: Kidman and Eckhart Pull You In

The premise of Rabbit Hole can be summed up in one sentence: a married couple grapples with their grief eight months after their young son, Danny, is killed in a car accident. John Cameron Mitchell's drama is heavy to say the least, but versatile performances from Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as the couple in question make the film heartbreaking in an engaging way, rather than overwrought and emotionally manipulative.

On the surface, Becca (Kidman) and Howie (Eckhart) seem like a picture-perfect couple. When the movie opens, housewife Becca is making dinner in their gorgeous kitchen as good-natured Howie arrives home wearing a suit and a smile. Within a few minutes, we realize that Becca and Howie are just putting on an act, and though the spouses are doing their best to get back into an old routine, the film's message is clear: when you've lost a loved one, you can't ever go back. But how do you move forward?

Nicole and Keith Celebrate Rabbit Hole With Jon and Jennifer

Nicole Kidman had husband Keith Urban by her side last night for the NYC premiere of Rabbit Hole. In the intense drama, Nicole plays a parent dealing with the loss of a child, and the role is already getting her lots of Oscar buzz. Nicole was asked about the potential for another Academy Award win yesterday, and she said, "You never know and you just hope for the best. I suppose the biggest thing for me is that the film connects with people, because I feel very strongly that the film is special." She has received other accolades so far, starting with a Best Female Lead nod at the Independent Spirit Awards. Nicole was joined on the red carpet by costars Sandra Oh and Aaron Eckhart, who both moved on to the afterparty to pose for funny photos. Jon Hamm also showed his pretty face, and interesting new haircut, with girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt. Nicole and Aaron apparently struck up quite a friendship while working on the movie, and now she's excited to find him a nice lady so he can finally put his bachelor days behind him.

Ryan Gosling brought a special lady, his mom, Donna, as his date to the second annual Governors Awards in LA on Saturday night. The birthday boy celebrated his 30th at Disneyland on Friday, and while he's had plenty of memorable onstage moments in the past, the evening was all about the honorees like Francis Ford Coppola and Eli Wallach. Sofia Coppola came out to support her dad alongside Natalie Portman in a gorgeous purple Lanvin gown, a Marchesa-wearing Hilary Swank, and Elle Fanning in Valentino. The ladies were joined by guests Stephen Dorff, who recently showed off his shirtless physique, Justin Long, and Josh Brolin, who stuck by his red-hot wife, Diane Lane.
