Jessica Relaxes Before Her Time on the Oscar Stage

Jessica Biel certainly doesn't need to do any extra work to get herself Oscar ready -- the girl is always in outstanding shape. She must be excited, though, because this weekend will be her first time on stage at the Oscars! She's just a presenter, but maybe someday soon she'll be holding one of those coveted little gold men of her very own.

The Look Of The Governors Ball

While we have to wait until Sunday to see what all of the stars will be wearing at the Oscars, I've been giving you a sneak peek of the recipes that will be served at the Academy Awards official after party, the Governors Ball all week long. As if knowing what the celebs will be eating wasn't enough, I've found some awesome pictures of the decorations at the event space. The Governors Ball is held in the Grand Ballroom on the top level of the Hollywood & Highland Center and is put on by Sequoia Productions (an event planning firm based out of Los Angeles). The decor is set in beautiful shades of white, cream, gold, butter, and burgundy with low lighting, wood details, thousands of candles, and fresh flowers everywhere. Will the Academy Choose Jennifer Hudson?

Jennifer Hudson looks pretty happy as she blows lots of kisses at a Dreamgirls' Press Conference in Tokyo. We don't blame her - the girl has tons to smile about. She's racked up a slew of awards for her role as Effie. In fact, it seems as if she hasn't lost at an awards show yet. We can't wait to see if the Academy will follow suit. She's already come so far since American Idol, but winning an Oscar would really be the icing on the cake of Jennifer's Cinderella story.

Judi Dench Plans to Break a Leg, Just Not at the Oscars

Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett were on hand for the premiere of Notes on a Scandal at the Berlin International Film Festival this week. Judi is up for Best Actress for her role in the film but don't tell her to break a leg at the ceremony. The Oscar winner will already be getting her leg broken - literally when she goes in for knee surgery. She says she'll be watching the ceremony from her bed! We hope her surgery goes well, and who knows, by the end of it she could have another Oscar to put on her mantel!

The Prestige was also nominated for a cinematography award, and both of these nominations seem justified. Every week up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories. This week, I'll be looking at the nominees for best costumes, and today's featured movie is The Queen.

Like any biographical drama, The Queen faces the challenge of reflecting the style and dress of actual people at a precise time in history. The costumes in The Queen accurately and naturally portray the Royal Family in 1997 London, so that they are a seamless (ha ha) aspect of the storytelling and not a distraction. In this case, it's not so much that the costumes are dazzling, as in Marie Antoinette or Dreamgirls, but that they are so normal that you never doubt the authenticity of the story.

Oscar Nominee: Marie Antoinette for Best Costumes

Sofia Coppola did some interesting things with this story trying to make it "cool" and palatable for today's youth-obsessed culture. Yet, the outcome basically resembles a modern-day music video, complete with hip songs and bright, flashy costumes. The costumes have caught the eye of the Academy, and rightfully so. The rich, candy-like colors and textures remind me of sugary-sweet, powder-puff confections, making for a visually dazzling film. The Oscar Luncheon Reminds Us The Big Night's Almost Here

Oscar nominees gathered for a luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel yesterday. Talk about networking. This was a room full of hopefuls that also have the power to create the best in Hollywood. However for this event apparently all egos are put aside. You know the drill; they are all just honored to be nominated. As for the big event, well this just reminds us we are this much closer to the big day so fill out your ballot now! Did we mention there are prizes? This is the Oscars people so you know they are going to be good!

You can tell there are no nerves at this event. The nominees are at ease and looking fabulous. Love how pretty Penelope looks in all white and the boys cleaned up pretty well also. Like The Black Dahlia, The Prestige benefits from Scarlett Johansson, whose classic beauty fits nicely in period films. The Prestige tells the story of two magicians in turn-of-the-century London whose intense rivalry ultimately leads to murder. The other cast members - including Michael Caine, David Bowie, Hugh Jackman, and Christian Bale - also look right at home in the smoky mystery. Between the actors' distinguished looks and director Christopher Nolan's cinematic skills, the end result is an atmosphere of dark intrigue. While The Black Dahlia was critically panned as a bit of a snooze-fest, director Brian DePalma clearly got something right in creating a classic film-noir atmosphere. The clean-cut cast members - including Josh Hartnett, Hilary Swank, Scarlett Johansson and Aaron Eckhart - appear polished and glamorous. If you look at the images without hearing the actors talk or try to act, the effect is beautiful and evocative. This Neil Burger-directed film-starring Edward Norton and Jessica Biel-isn't a masterpiece, but its visual mastery is entirely deserving of an Oscar nod, if not a win. Set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, this intrigue-filled tale of a magician and his mistress excels thanks to the work of cinematographer Dick Pope. Will Honored as a Modern Master

Will Smith went from warming up a NYC crowd of extras to being honored at the 22nd Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. BFF Tom Cruise presented Will with the Modern Master Award. Will is up for an Oscar for his performance in The Pursuit of Happyness and was asked about the film's success and what it takes to be a good father. Here's more:

"People are enjoying the film and it's reached a level of critical acclaim; it can't get any better than this," he said. "This is such a glorious time, it feels almost like emotional, spiritual greed."

Asked what it takes to be a good father, Smith said patience, compassion and commitment. He's the father of three in real life, including 7-year-old Jaden, who co-stars in the movie.

"You've got to really want to be a good father," he told reporters on the red carpet outside the Arlington Theatre on Saturday night.

Oscar Noms Announced, Dreamgirls, Babel Score Big

The nominations for the 75th Academy Awards were announced this morning in Los Angeles by Salma Hayek and Sid Ganis. Dreamgirls scored the most nominations with eight, but was shut out of the Best Picture category (Beyonce was also passed over). Babel came in with seven nominations, and while it scored two acting noms, some of its actors, most notably Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett who many thought were shoo-ins, were also left out. Blanchett did earn a Supporting Actress nod for her work in Notes On a Scandal. The nominees in some of the major categories are:

Jessica Gets A Nomination

Jessica and Ashlee sported matching hairdos this weekend in LA. While the two seem to be in a great mood we're not so sure Jess will be happy about her latest news. She was nominated for a worst actress Razzie Award for Employee of the Month. The Razzie Awards give prizes to the worst actors and films and joining Jessica in her category are LL for Just My Luck, Sharon Stone for Basic Instinct 2 and the Duffs for Material Girls. We're betting Sharon Stone takes home the actual award.
