What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Dreamgirls
The Dreamgirls DVD features about a million extra things, including but not limited to: 12 extended and alternate scenes, the music video for Beyonce's "Listen" along with Beyonce's screen test for the film, a feature-length making-of documentary, Anika Noni Rose's audition, and "Steppin’ To The Bad Side" – the choreography audition. The film itself follows a trio of friends who hit it big as a girl group and then experience the highs and lows of fame and fortune. You may have heard that Jennifer Hudson won this year's Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. Yet the tables may turn at the MTV Movie Awards, as she and Beyonce vie for Best Performance. I thought this movie was pretty good, though I maintain that Eddie Murphy gives the most amazing performance of all.

read more Little Children Adapted from Tom Perotta's absorbing novel, Little Children tells a tale of suburban woe. Kate Winslet turns in a wonderfully nuanced performance as Sarah, a stay-at-home mother who finds herself bored with the other moms and often annoyed by motherhood itself. When she meets stay-at-home dad Brad, however, life gets a little rosier. The two form a friendship which soon turns into something deeper. Meanwhile, a disturbed man with pedophilic tendencies invokes the fear and ire of the townspeople. The direction is impressive, lending a hazy summertime feeling to issues that dive into very dark places. This is a rare time when I don't know which to recommend more: the novel or the film.
Alpha Dog When Alpha Dog first came out, Justin Timberlake shocked many (myself included) by earning major kudos for his performance in this disturbing film. Based on a true story, Alpha Dog follows Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch), a drug dealer in a privileged L.A. suburb who becomes one of the youngest men to ever be on the FBI's most-wanted list. He and his friends imitate what they believe to be the glamorous gangster lifestyle, and when Johnny's competitor Jake Marzursky (Ben Foster) cheats him out of a chunk of money, Johnny kidnaps Jake's younger brother, Zack (Anton Yelchin). A total of 38 people witness the three days during which Zack is Truelove's prisoner, but no one thinks to break up the party and notify the police - until it's way too late.

Movie Preview: Alpha Dog

Justin Timberlake has come a long way from when he sported this curly blond 'do. (Can you believe this is the main photo on the star's IMDB page?!). His biggest acting project to date, Alpha Dog, comes out this Friday, and Timberlake is getting stellar reviews for his role.

Inspired by a true story, Emile Hirsch plays Johnny Truelove, a drug dealer in a privileged L.A. suburb who becomes one of the youngest men to ever be on the FBI's most-wanted list. He and his friends imitate what they believe to be the glamorous gangster lifestyle, and when Johnny's competitor Jake Marzursky (Ben Foster) cheats him out of a chunk of money, Johnny kidnaps Jake's younger brother, Zack (Anton Yelchin). A total of 38 people witness the three days during which Zack is Truelove's prisoner, but no one thinks to break up the party and notify the police.

Director Nick Cassavetes has a varied resume, having acted in Face/Off, written the screenplay for Blow, and directed The Notebook. I'm curious to see Timberlake show off his dramatic acting chops; we've already seen him take on comedy. But I'm just not sure the movie will be worth it. Justin's Alpha Dog May be in Some Trouble

Justin may be single now, but he sure didn't look sad walking down the red carpet solo to show off his latest project. Last night JT attended the premiere of his new movie Alpha Dog in LA. It's a film about the kidnap and murder of a Southern California teenager that actually did happen, and now the real life drama may cause the film's January 12th release to be delayed. Here's more:

Despite having the characters' names changed, Hollywood is shown in a bad light throughout the film, attorney James Blatt said, and a jury pool could be tainted, infringing on Hollywood's right to a fair trial.

Universal Studios argued that prohibiting the public from seeing the movie would violate the First Amendment.

Last month, a federal judge refused to stop the film's release but Hollywood appealed the decision. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to rule in the coming days.

"Alpha Dog" is based on the kidnapping and slaying of 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz seven years ago. Prosecutors believe Hollywood, portrayed in the movie by Emile Hirsch, was the mastermind behind the murder plot. The teen's body was later found in a remote Santa Barbara County camping area.

Markowitz was killed as part of a feud Hollywood had with the victim's older half brother over a $1,200 drug debt, prosecutors said. Four others have been convicted in connection with the murder.

Let's hope nothing comes of this. We're really looking forward to checking out JT's new flick soon. We're betting it will be a good one based on the fabulous acting skills he showed off a few weeks ago on SNL. Justin's Alpha Dog

Will Alpha Dog ever make it to theaters? We have been seeing hot images of a tattooed JT for such a long time. We even heard this movie did well at the festivals but apparently the release date keeps getting pushed back. The latest is we will have to wait until January 2007 to see tough guy Justin on the big screen. Until then, check out pics of Justin all tattooed for his new movie Alpha Dog. Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried Bring Sexy Back For Their W Shoot

Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried grace the cover of W's October American-style issue playing the role of a powerful and trendsetting couple. Wearing designs from Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, JT suits up inside the pages while Amanda vacillates between a sexy mistress and doting wife in attire from Carolina Herrera and Calvin Klein. Justin and Amanda carry out an unexpected love affair in their fast-paced thriller In Time, but for their W interview, the onscreen pair slowed things down to chat about sex, getting involved with costars, and more. They said:

Timberlake on the audition process: "In films, I didn’t crave the type of attention I had sort of stumbled into in my music career. And I do not audition well. I’m really not good at it. Early on, I did movies like Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan because the directors didn’t ask me to audition."
Seyfried on acting in sex scenes: "Sex scenes are great. A lot of my costars have been sexy guys my age, and so, why not? I’m not going to pretend it’s not fun. Justin was great - he had come from doing Friends With Benefits, where he basically had sex every day at work - and so it was easy for both of us. We just kind of got it on, and then were like, 'That was good!'"
Amanda on getting involved with costars: "I love acting like I’m in love. It’s a very positive thing. Making a movie is, in general, romantic. It’s very special, very intimate. So you can see why a lot of actors get together. When you’re young, it’s hard not to get together with your costar. But I’ve been doing this long enough to know that it’s usually not the greatest idea."
Justin on his relationship with SNL's Andy Samberg: "[joking] We have two kids now-two boys. One of them is named Samberg and the other is named Timberlake. So they’re Timberlake Samberg and Samberg Timberlake. I think it’s supercreative and egoless to name your kids after yourself [Laughs]."

Study Finds Alpha Males Most Stressed, Beta May Be Better

A study of male baboons has found that being on the top is overrated. Field biologists looked at alpha male baboons and discovered that the alphas were the most stressed in their social group, and the lower in rank they got the less stressed they were. For humans, stress like this can cause health problems and make you less able to fight off disease, so being the top dog could cost you. Alpha male baboons may be stressed from the responsibilities of fending off enemies and watching over the females, while the No. 2 baboons, the beta males, get a lot of the perks of being high ranking without the stress of being alpha. One of the doctors involved in the study said betas do "pretty well for a long time, rather than very well for a short time."

If these findings ring true for humans, it may be better to be beta, at least in the long run. When it comes to guys you've been interested in, do you typically go for the head honcho or the second in command? Do nice betas finish last?
