Easy A: Gets High Marks in Charm

In Easy A, our heroine Olive Pendergast says she wants her life to be like a John Hughes movie. It's a lofty aspiration considering Hughes's reputation as the teen movie master, but it's one that the film unapologetically strives for with a playful wink. You have the alluring love interest à la Sixteen Candles (played here by Penn Badgley), Ferris Bueller-inspired shower karaoke, and a witty red-headed leading lady who is seemingly oblivious to her own coolness.

Emma Stone plays Olive, a teen homebody who's mistakenly branded as the school's own Hester Prynne after lying to her BFF (Aly Michalka) about losing her virginity. When the self-righteous religious club leader (Amanda Bynes) overhears, it's not long before everyone knows about Olive's supposed fling. Enter Brandon (Cougar Town's Dan Byrd), a bullied closeted gay student. Olive pretends to have sex with him to help his reputation, and she becomes the Mother Teresa of social outcasts, offering imaginary makeouts and boob fondling to help geeks up their popularity. read more. Never before has Stone been required to carry a film, and she handles it with aplomb. The actress is perfectly convincing as a sharp-tongued girl who rattles off pop culture references as often as SAT words. Stone handles the vulnerability of her character's moral conflict (should she help others if it means hurting herself?) with ease, and of course it helps having an excellent ensemble to back her up. As Olive's parents, Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson nearly steal the show as a goofy, loving couple who are genuinely friends with their daughter. Thomas Haden Church plays Olive's sarcastic, "cool" teacher, and Lisa Kudrow as his wife gets to be a guidance counselor who's delightfully crazy. Thanks to its cast, the movie goes beyond your typical high school comedy, and even cutesy high school dialogue feels more endearing than irritating. It may not go down in history like the works of John Hughes, but in the company of more recent school movies, Easy A easily makes the grade.

Amanda Bynes Says She's Retiring - Will You Miss Her?

Just the other day my friend and I were talking about how we've been missing Amanda Bynes in movies lately. She had just seen She's the Man, and we were commenting on her spot-on comedic timing. Well, too bad for us, because now comes word that Bynes is leaving acting for good - the actress took to her Twitter account over the weekend to announce that she's retired.

The news has me thinking back to her days on The Amanda Show or her "Ask Ashley" segment on All That (if you haven't seen either, go here and here). Sure, she was a bit over-the-top, but she was totally a little SNL comedienne in the making. If her recent tweet is to be believed, the last we may be seeing of Bynes is September's Easy A. I know she hasn't exactly been churning out movies, but I'm a bit disappointed none the less. How about you?

Movie Preview: Emma Stone Gets a Bad Reputation in Easy A

Prepare to be refreshed: for every dozen lackluster comedies, a diamond in the rough emerges, and by the looks of this trailer, that diamond could be Easy A. Emma Stone is at home in the starring role of the high school comedy - somewhat of a modern-day version of The Scarlet Letter - as Olive, a high school nobody. Her standing at school suddenly changes when she pretends to sleep with a gay classmate (Cougar Town's Dan Byrd) as an act of goodwill so their peers will stop torturing him. The lie soon snowballs, and her rep becomes both scandalized and impossible to ignore.

The premise is made all the better by the funny preview - it definitely smacks of Mean Girls, both in setting and humor (sample Olive quip: "I fake rocked your world"). Factor in the many famous faces in the film, like Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Lisa Kudrow, plus Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci as Olive's parents, and I'm ready to slap on a scarlet "E" for excited.

Fashion Week Comes to a Star-Studded Close in NYC

Yesterday was the last day of Spring Fashion Week in NYC, and the celebrity attendants closed the spectacle in style. Tommy Hilfiger's show and afterparty brought out Penn Badgley and Naomi Watts, while the designer himself posed with a pretty-in-pink January Jones. Taylor Swift took a break from the ongoing Kanye drama to take in Tommy's presentation, as did Rosario Dawson and Emily Blunt. Amanda Bynes spent her afternoon at Ann Taylor, and Rachel Zoe was in an olive onesie to toast the latest Calvin Klein collection - though she had to cut out early to nurse her flu with her special drink. Today held another round of runway shows at New York Fashion Week as the stars tirelessly head out to Bryant Park to see the latest fashions. Rachel Bilson supported her good friend Brian Reyes and his Spring collection. Kirsten Dunst laughed in the front row of the Rodarte show which displayed Native American looks. Kristin Cavallari showed off her sexy black dress with a cutout back at the Walter presentation as many other celebrities like Nicky Hilton, Amanda Bynes and of course Anna Wintour checked out the scene.

Lauren, Kim, and Rachel Kick Off Monday With Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week was at it again bright and early this morning with another set of celebrity-studded shows. The fashion-loving stars were fresh off a weekend full of shows, with some even waking up after a night at the VMAs. Kim Kardashian was front and center at Tracy Reese as well as Jill Stuart where she joined Rachel Bilson, Amanda Bynes, and Nicky Hilton. Lauren Conrad skipped Whitney Port's collection last week, but was out for Rebecca Minkoff this morning wearing polka dots. Anna Wintour and Rachel Zoe have both been out since the beginning of Fashion Week and attended both Carolina Herrera and Donna Karan's shows today. Fashion Week is rolling on and the stars are showing no signs of fatigue as they kick off another in a string of long days in Bryant Park.

Whether they went short or long, the gorgeous girls on the red carpet at last night's VMAs sparkled in metallic hues. Taylor Swift led the glamorous parade in her floor-length gown, while Leighton Meester and Kristin Cavallari looked hot in their silvery dresses - both of them are doing well in Fab's best dressed poll, but who do you think deserves the title? Jennifer Lopez's featured an intricate neck, and the first of Ashley Greene's two looks of the evening had a gold skirt.

Stephanie Pratt stuck with the theme in her rhinestone-encrusted dress, while unintentional twins Pink and Shakira's dresses had a little gold embroidering. Fashion Weekend Bursts With Starlets, Famous Fashion Faces!

New York Fashion Week didn't slow down over the weekend, and the front rows were star-studded gearing up for last night's big event, the VMAs. Lindsay Lohan ducked into Alice + Olivia and Shenae Grimes, a sparkly Blake Lively, and Rachel Zoe all scored spots at the Diane von Furstenberg show on Sunday. Mischa stepped out for the Herve Leger show as well as to attend an event for The Beautiful Life. Rachel McAdams sat alongside Anna Wintour at Alexander Wang and posed with Leighton Meester backstage at Altuzarra. With so many big events taking place in New York, the fashionista stars were all over.

Hilary Duff and Amanda Bynes were front and center for the Herve Leger show, which is no big surprise considering how often they, especially Amanda, are seen wearing the ubiquitous bandage dresses. Kirsten Dunst mixed things up at Band of Outsiders, while Hayden Christensen was out without his fiance Rachel Bilson at Lacoste.
