Fighting Words from Anderson Cooper: Are Stay-at-Home Moms Lazy?

Oh, Anderson. Generally a bastion of solid journalism and insightful commentary, Anderson Cooper seems to have taken a cue from the talk show circuit with one of his recent shows, pitting stay-at-home moms against their work-outside-the-home counterparts.

The show's clearly-for-ratings title - "Are Stay-at-Home Moms Lazy?" - is drawn from the outburst of one of the guest moms, who declares that women who stay at home with their kids use it as "almost an excuse to be lazy." Anderson follows up this evolved comment with an insightful, "You're saying that stay-at-home moms are lazy?!"

The whole point of the show was to discuss a controversial new study claiming that moms who work outside the home are happier than those who stay at home with their lil ones. Surprise, surprise, the guests weren't able to come to any sort of consensus. Understandably, people aren't pleased with the show's topic and especially not with its producers' choice of title, and they are blogging up a storm about it - which is probably exactly the point. Well played, Mr. Cooper. Welcome to daytime TV.

Is it me, or does this whole argument feel a bit dated? Aren't moms over-judging each other like this?

Jane Fonda Doesn't Miss Her 20s

Jane Fonda, 74, reflected on her eccentric life today on Anderson, telling the host that "you couldn't pay" her to go back to her teens or 20s. She confessed, "It was not so easy for me. For girls, teenage-hood is really hard." The icon admitted that she doesn't miss the pressure she felt while coming of age to be popular or thin. Matt and Scarlett Try Their Hand at Talk Show Hosting

Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson stopped by Anderson Cooper's daytime show, Anderson, recently to chat about their soon-to-be released family film, We Bought a Zoo. Matt spoke about raising four daughters and what they have planned for the holidays. Matt said, "Well, this year I did this movie and then another one so it was a really busy year. We are just going to hang out. . . I just want to sit on the couch really."

Scarlett told us at the NYC premiere of We Bought a Zoo that she wants to relax over the next few weeks as well. She didn't talk to Anderson about her end-of-year itinerary, nor did she touch on her rumored boyfriend Dan White. Manhattan-raised Scarlett did, though, reveal that she never rides the subway.

Matt and Scarlett joined Anderson in the audience to field questions from fans. Matt seemed a bit intimidated when Anderson offered him a chance to host the show for a bit, but he got a hand from his Tony-winning costar, Scarlett. Brooklyn, Sofia, Miley, Emma, and More Show Their Support at CNN's Heroes Tribute

The annual CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute event, which honors those making differences in their communities and around the globe, filled LA's Shrine Auditorium with plenty of stars last night. Emma Roberts was on hand to present in a short black Maria Lucia Hohan dress while Sofia Vergara chose dark hued Dolce & Gabbana and Brooklyn Decker went with a metallic Christian Dior number. Miley Cyrus, who performed “The Climb,” arrived in a revealing yellow Roberto Cavalli gown with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth by her side. They weren't the only famous faces to show their support at the event since AnnaLynne McCord, Mary-Louise Parker, Christy Turlington, and others also came out for the show. CNN's own Anderson Cooper has since returned to NYC, but did his part by hosting the evening and wowing a few celebrities like Emma, who twittered that meeting him backstage was a dream come true.

Can Anderson Cooper Replace Oprah Winfrey?

I was missing my usual daily dose of Oprah Winfrey and was determined to find a substitute talk show. Turns out, Anderson Cooper, the famous silver-haired anchor from CNN, has his own daytime talk show called Anderson.

I've been watching a couple of episodes, but I feel like it just doesn't measure up. Sure, Anderson is charming and at times humorous, but he lacks the high emotional intelligence and the warmth that Oprah exudes. I feel that to really touch people's hearts and lives, you need to show them you can connect with the audience and the guests on a deeper level. We're so attuned to Oprah that when she laughs, we chuckle along, and when she cries, our tears well up as well. Somehow, I feel like it'll be hard to do that with Anderson, but perhaps I need to give him a chance. What do you think - can Anderson replace Oprah as our go-to daytime talk show host?

Anderson Cooper Shares His Mom Gloria Vanderbilt's Story

Anderson Cooper invited his mom Gloria Vanderbilt to his new talk show on Monday to discuss her eventful life. Now, the new daytime host has put the entire episode on his website, so more people can watch.

In the interview Gloria, 87, discusses the suicide of her other son, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper; he jumped from the family's NYC penthouse in front of her in 1988. She told Anderson, "There was a moment when I thought I was going to jump after him. But then I thought of you and it stopped me from doing that." The interview is a touching display of mother-son love, and anyone who has dealt with suicide will probably relate. But there are also some lighter moments, including post-menopause sex tips from Kathy Griffin. Watch the episode for yourself below.

Anderson Cooper Will Tackle Issues Important to Women and Feature His Mom on New Daytime Show

Anderson Cooper's new daytime show Anderson kicks off Sept. 12, and we can expect to see a more personal side of the news anchor. On the show, Anderson plans to be part of the conversation about topics ranging from social issues, human interest stories, and pop culture phenomenons. Anderson chatted with reporters this morning and gave us more insight into his latest project. Here are five things to know.

He'll take on issues important to women. Anderson wants to offer a fresh perspective on social trends impacting women. So far, he says, that includes marriage, custody, and food issues.
His mom, Gloria Vanderbilt, will be a guest. Anderson revealed that his 87-year-old mother has watched tapings from the studio audience already, raising her hand eagerly to ask questions, and he plans to do a whole hour on her.

Anderson explained why, with these touching words about his mom: "She was born in the '20s into this family of great wealth, and she suffered tremendous tragedies in her life. Her father died when she was an infant, she was the subject of a custody battle where she was taken away from her own mother, at the time it was call the 'trial of the century.' And yet, she is somebody, no matter what has happened, you know, my brother killed himself in front of her, she's a survivor. She has this inner core, determination, and drive to move forward, and to remain open to being hurt. My mom is 87, and she still thinks the next great love is around the corner. To be able to survive, not with a thick skin or tough hide, but to survive and still have your heart be open, to still be open to new experiences, and new heartbreak, and new love, and new triumphs, that's something I've learned from her."
It's kicking off with high drama. His first episode will feature the parents and boyfriend of late singer Amy Winehouse, and he's already shot an episode with The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which will also air next week. Anderson thinks these guests have the potential to teach his audience something. He thinks Amy Winehouse's struggle is "a story that relates to everybody. Who doesn't have someone in their family overcoming substances abuse issues?" As for the housewives, he says: "We spent half the show talking about Russell's suicide, and whether the show should be on the air at all, and whether they bare any responsibility, or if reality TV bears any responsibility. It raises real questions about reality TV, what role - if any - it plays, how they recruit these people, and what these people are really in for."
He's going outside his comfort zone. "I went spray tanning with Snooki," he admits. I'm looking forward to that episode.
It's personal, not strictly business. Anderson thinks you can have more fun in daytime than news. "It's nice to show different sides of you," he said. "I want viewers to see who I am and get a sense of what I'm like as a fully rounded three-dimensional person."

“Never underestimate the value of just out-hustling everyone else. Just outwork everyone else around you - coming in before everyone does and leaving late. I feel like I only got a job at CNN because I kept volunteering for the shifts no one really wanted . . . If no one would give me an opportunity, I had to make one.”
