What's more, the story follows two estranged musical legends (played by Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson) who pair up again for a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader.

Movie Preview: Soul Men

After seeing a few clips of Soul Men a little while ago, I was intrigued by this comedy starring Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac (it also includes one of Isaac Hayes's final performances), which is why I was happy to recently find an actual trailer.

Everyone knows that Jackson is perfectly suited for roles in dark comedies, but to see him as one half of a straight-up buddy movie is kind of unexpected and fun. He looks quite comfortable playing the straight man here. Of course, there are pangs of grief that come with watching this trailer, but it's also joyful to see Bernie Mac on the screen in a warm, bumbling, and funny role. He's the kind of comedian who makes me laugh just with his gestures and the inflection in his voice.

Needless to say, I will definitely be in line with bells on for this one when it hits theaters November 7. To take a look for yourself,

Videos like this Saturday Night Live ad spoof for Tabasco's hot sauce carry purse make me realize how much I'll miss Bernie Mac. His earnest delivery convinces me that I need this very purse to feed my nacho addiction. There's even a murse version! "Oh it’s still a purse, but it's for dudes, and it has hot sauce in it." Sold!

I knew this movie was being made, but I wasn't paying a ton of attention to it, since there was nothing to check out yet. But now that I've seen a few clips of Soul Men, I honestly can't wait to see it. Sadly, these are now some of the final performances for both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, but the good news is that this movie looks great, and yes, soulful. It makes me happy for the two entertainers, may they rest in peace.

Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson star as Floyd and Louis, "two estranged soul-singing legends [who] agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader." Isaac Hayes appears as himself. In one brief clip, Hayes goes to wish Floyd and Louis luck backstage, and Jackson says, "Thanks, we're gonna need it," and then the clip ends right there. Of the three people in that scene, two died in the same weekend. It's a little spooky.

Bernie Mac, the tough-talking, controversial, big teddy bear of a comedian died Saturday at a hospital due to complications from pneumonia. Mac had a rough childhood growing up on the South Side of Chicago, but rose to prominence doing standup, ultimately shining in television (The Bernie Mac Show, in which he played a grumpy dad who often directly addressed the viewer) and starring in movies (Ocean's 11, Charlie's Angel's, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner). The anti-Bill Cosby, Mac was a straight talker whose salty talk and bawdy topics got him into trouble just as recently as the past month during a fund-raiser for Barack Obama. And, like many people of color doing comedy, the question of race and audience were a dilemma. About The Bernie Mac show, he said in an AP interview in 2001, "Now everyone telling me what I CAN'T do, what I CAN say, what I SHOULD do, and asking, `Are blacks gonna be mad at you? Are whites gonna accept you?'" As the above clip shows, Mac wasn't afraid to show that he wasn't perfect, but did his best. Rest in peace, Bernie!

Isaac Hayes, 65, died early Sunday morning in Memphis after relatives found him collapsed on the floor near a treadmill. The cause of death is unknown but thought to be natural causes. - E! Online

Bernie Mac RIP

This morning the sad news comes that comedian Bernie Mac has passed away from complications due to pneumonia. He was only 50 years old, and although he was in the hospital since Aug. 1, he was expected to recover. The comedian is survived by his wife Rhonda McCullough and their daughter Je'Niece. The stand-up comedian, Emmy-nominated sitcom actor, and one of the Oceans gang still has a few movies coming out, including Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Soul Men. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and fans.

Matt & George Still Happy To Show Off Ocean's

Brad hung back in LA, but George, Matt & Ellen took the Ocean's Thirteen premiere train to Chicago last night. Surprisingly, they still looked totally good natured about the exhausting schedule. Hey, anything in the name of an excellent charity! As for their time in Vegas to promote the Sin City-based film, Don Cheadle had this to say about George's luck, "He's the unluckiest guy in the world, so you can take his chips really fast,” he joked. “Brad’s the luckiest.” “I feel like it,” Brad added. Awww, that's pretty adorable. With all these premieres, I wonder if they're sick of watching the movie yet?
