Yogini Kristin McGee Dishes on Bethenny Frankel's Fave Pose and Getting Ready For Beach Season

I was lucky enough to take a class taught by Manhattan-based yoga teacher Kristin McGee right here in San Francisco! Although one busy lady, Kristin traveled across the country to teach Vinyasa Vibes (a new offering at The Sports Club/LA), a flow-based, powerful yoga sequence enhanced by music. The most musical part of the practice? During Savasana, the class culminated in a live sax solo by Grammy-nominated musician Dave Koz. After class, Kristin and I chatted about her yoga journey, getting ready for bikini season, and what it's like working with one of her famous clients, Bethenny Frankel.

FitSugar: Some of the moves in Vinyasa Vibes are Ashtanga-influenced. Is that what your yoga teacher training background was in?
Kristin McGee: My original background was really eclectic because I started in the early '90s. I started taking [yoga] at NYU; some of my very early teachers were Jivamukti teachers who did study Ashtanga. Then I did study with Richard Freedman for a while, who is pure Ashtanga, and Cyndi Lee at OM Yoga. I wanted to get deeper into Iyengar classes and get into the alignment and the detail. Now in my practice I want to get more into Pranayama, more of the breathing, and maybe take some more Kundalini classes. I just feel like it constantly evolves.

FS: The Vinyasa Vibes class has live music during final relaxation. Can you elaborate on the experience of live music and yoga combined?
KM: In yoga practice, it’s a very intimate, immediate place. It's almost like live theater or live music where it brings you right into the moment. Music is a universal language, just like our breath is a universal breath. I think the second we're in this surrounding, in this environment with that live music and the intimacy of a live class, it brings it all together in one beautiful experience.

FS: You’ve collaborated with Bethenny Frankel on some projects. What's her favorite pose?
KM: Bethenny’s all-time favorite pose is Straddle Forward Bend because she says it feels like the weight of the world is falling off of her shoulders. Someone like Bethenny Frankel has a million things going on, and I don’t know how she does it! But I think you also noticed it in the practice tonight. Right when we finally got to that Straddle Forward Hang, it was kind of just like, "Ugh! Such a release!" You feel like you could stay there for quite a while.

Bethenny Reveals Sangria Secrets as She Pokes Fun at Bravo

Memorable drinks and bites aren't the only things at play inside the South Beach Wine and Food Festival tents - the Grand Tasting Village also holds an impressive lineup of cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs and culinary personalities.

To my surprise, one of the most captivating (and entertaining) cooking demos came from Bravo's Bethenny Frankel. Although the Skinnygirl cocktails magnate was on hand to demonstrate pea guacamole and sangria, she really just wound up doling out zinger after zinger about sex and the Bravo network.

In between laughs, we did learn one great kitchen tip from her - how to make sangria even classier and more delicious. While prepping sangria, Bethenny swapped her ice for a bag of frozen mixed berries, a move she called cost-effective. We call it brilliant!

The Hollywood Reporter's annual Women in Entertainment breakfast brought plenty of lovely ladies to the Beverly Hills hotel this morning. Kate Bosworth, Kirsten Dunst, and others showed their support for the many executives and stars that were honored by the publication. Kirsten and Kate both wore buttoned-up dresses while Chelsea Handler, who was one of the honorees, chose a form-fitting printed number. Bethenny Frankel showed up in white to accept her honor, though other winners Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, and Tina Fey, missed the show. Jane Fonda was recognized with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award and arrived with Sherry, who was the first woman to head a major Hollywood studio. The Help's Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer were also on hand for the event as were Lily Collins and Kathy Griffin.

Taste Test: Low-Cal Skinnygirl Margarita

While perusing the liquor store last week for libations to enjoy with old friends, bottles of Bethenny Frankel's much-touted Skinnygirl Margarita were staring me in the face. I love a good margarita as much as the next gal, so I decided to take the plunge and bring two bottles to my friend's house.

Heavily tipping the calorie scale when compared to most cocktails, margaritas are what I would call a caloric nightmare. A 10-ounce regular margarita can run upwards of 700 calories. The high calorie count paired with the fact that preprepared cocktails are generally made with high fructose corn syrup, yellow dye #5, and preservatives convinced Bethenny she needed to create a low-calorie, all-natural prepared margarita. If you want to workout like Bethenny, she has her own fitness DVD titled Body by Bethenny. But what else does Bethenny do to stay in shape? Here are some of her secrets:

Her opinion on extreme diets and workouts: "They are not realistic. They aren’t sustainable, and they lead to binge eating (beating ourselves up emotionally and physically by gorging on food) and erratic workout schedules."
On how working out is like a good friend you see when you can: "If you don’t see them for a while, you can always pick up where you left off. Consistency is the key. That is the most important part about exercise."
On her workout routine: "People never believe that all I do is 40 minutes of my “Body by Bethenny” yoga DVD a few times a week or walk on the elliptical machine for a total of 4 workout days. And I never leave my house."

Bethenny Frankel Changes Baby Bryn on the Bathroom Floor

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. On last night's episode of Bethenny Ever After the new mama took a break from her meal to change baby Bryn's diaper in a restaurant's tiny restroom. With no changing table available, she covered the floor with her changing pad and went to work, only to wonder how she was supposed to use the bathroom while holding her tot.

The scene was eerily reminiscent of my first meal out with my lil one. I confidently strode into the restroom with my baby and diaper bag in tow, only to find the requisite pull-down table missing. I balked at putting my infant on the dirty floor (even if it was covered) and tried to come up with a different method. I managed to balance my son and his changing pad on my lap while sitting on the toilet, only to wonder how I was supposed to then use the facility myself. Let's just say it took a lot of coordination! Now, I'm sure to check out the Sit or Squat app before entering a restaurant with my kids. What was your toughest diaper change environment?
