The Lakers Star-Studded Front Row Kicks Off NBA Season

The LA Lakers helped kick off the NBA season last night with their celebrity cheering section out in full force. David Beckham was front and center as usual to support his fellow professional athletes, but this time without his pint-size fans, while longtime Lakers lovers Leonardo DiCaprio and Kevin Connolly enjoyed a guys night out. Denzel Washington and his wife joked around with Governor Schwarzenegger, while Tobey Maguire watched intently. The Lakers handily defeated the Portland Trailblazers to start off a season that they and all their star fans hope is full of wins like that one.

Angelina Jolie's A Growing Changeling Back to Black

Angelina Jolie's cheeks must hurt from all the smiling alongside her director Clint Eastwood at this morning's Changeling photocall at Cannes. The giddy coworkers were up bright and early after a star-studded dinner last night. We saw Brad and Angelina looking gorgeous all dressed up on their way out, where they met up with friends like Clint, Mick Jagger and Brett Ratner at Restaurant Tetou in Golfe-Juan. She's been loving her flowing dresses and lighter brighter colors, but this morning it was back to an all-black pant ensemble - though that grin still lights up the look. It's been a busy week at the festival for the soon to be mom of six, but with her days off spent in a bikini poolside at that estate, no wonder she keeps so fresh and happy.

Denzel & Russell: Happy to Be American Gangsters

One of the last movies I can't wait to see this year, American Gangster, premiered in Hollywood last night. The film's illustrious stars Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, along with Mel Gibson and producer Brian Grazer, were all out to celebrate the epic in their finest suits. Both Russell and Denzel are no stranger to the Oscar nominations, so it will be interesting to see if these two can live up to their names and reputation together on screen. Recently the two sat down with EW to chat about working together, the big O and how awesome the title of their movie is. Here's highlights:

There have been so many great gangster movies over the years, right up to The Departed. Did either of you hesitate before stepping into those shoes?
RUSSELL CROWE: Yeah, but when was the last character like Frank Lucas? That's a gigantic thing. That's the Mount Rushmore of gangsters right there. What amazes me is that nobody has come up with this title before.
DENZEL WASHINGTON: It's a heck of a title.
CROWE: I reckon Martin Scorsese is sitting somewhere in an office in New York and he sees ''American Gangster'' and he's like, ''F---! And I went with Casino?'' [Laughs] It should be the title of a political film, really.

There's already Oscar buzz around American Gangster and your performances. Is it hard not to get invested in it when you hear that?
WASHINGTON: What are you going to do? There's no Oscar gym you go to to get in Oscar shape. There's not much you can do about it. If you get invited to the show, you go. The work is done. You know what? It beats a sharp stick in the eye that people are talking about it. That's gravy.
CROWE: Let's not discourage people from going to see it, though.
WASHINGTON: By saying it's Oscar-worthy?
CROWE: I think it just gets into a ho-hum thing. Because how many people will run that flag up the pole when they're trying to make s--- look like chocolate ice cream? You know what I'm saying?

When you think back on the torturous road to get American Gangster onto the screen, does it say something larger about how difficult it is for Hollywood to make a big, grown-up drama these days?
CROWE: Pretty much every project has got some kind of torture in its history, if you want to examine it. I've had others that you persist with for eight years and suddenly you're at the premiere, shaking everyone's hand. I've always said, It's like surfing. Some days, for some reason, you jump up on the board and you stay balanced and you ride all the way to the beach and everybody's clapping. Other days, your drawers are full of sand, mate. I've been smacked on the beach many times.
WASHINGTON: [Nodding his head] And what do you do? You get back on.

As long as the process has been getting this one to the big screen, the buzz is so loud that I doubt there's any way it will fail. Plus, have you seen the trailers? There's no way not to get excited to see it. Denzel and Russell are both looking a little bit older (just a touch) these days, but that's only there to add to their movie titan charisma.

Spike Lee to Direct Film on James Brown

James Brown may have passed away this week but his friends and fans are making sure that his memory lives on. Spike Lee has just signed on with Paramount Pictures to direct a film about the Godfather of Soul. The project is being developed by super producer Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind) and will most likely begin shooting in 2008. Brown evidently was working on the project before he died and granted Paramount access to his music rights. James has had a full and fascinating life. We can't wait to see it on the big screen. Leo, Cameron and Jon Stay Eco-Friendly and Smiling

Environmentally-conscious celebrities headed to the National Resources Defense Council's 20th Anniversary party in Beverly Hills on Saturday night. It was no surprise to see two of our favorite eco-loving celebrities Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio walking the red carpet. Cameron's also had some fun movie news to celebrate - she's in talks to star in a legal comedy called Bobbie Sue. Jon Hamm was also there showing off some scruff while still looking dapper in his suit. Earth Day was on the 22nd and a party celebrating our natural resources was the perfect way to end a particularly environmental week.

Debra Premieres Starter Wife, With Starter Wife Creator

Debra Messing was out looking nice (other than the dress) to celebrate the premiere of her new mini-series, Starter Wife. Also gracing the red carpet with her presence was Gigi Levangie (Grazer), who wrote the roman a clef, Starter Wife, on which the series is based. She was also on the arm of her maybe/maybe not ex-husband, movie producer Brian Grazer. Soooo, does that mean she wasn't a "starter wife" after all? Anyway, the show looks like it could be good summer fun. Plus, check back soon for our awesome Starter Wife Swag giveaway!! Yay! Free Stuff! Fun times.

Tom Cruise Gets a Black Tie Salute

There's never a moment's rest for Katie Holmes who was absolutely stunning out to help honor her husband at last night's Moving Image Black Tie Salute Honoring Tom Cruise in NYC. She and Posh are looking pretty similar in the hair dept these days, especially when Katie has it all straight like that. It looks like most of the women took the black tie part of the event very very literally with their choice of dress color, including Ellen Barkin and Julianne Moore. The museum's director talked about why they choose Tom, "Salutes are traditionally actors or directors...Some of these actors and directors are also multitasking, and Tom Cruise is one of them. His position with United Artists puts him into a whole new phase of his career, and that makes it a perfect time to honor him." Congrats to Tom, but (cheese alert) what better prize could he want more than Katie's infectious smile.

Vince and Seth Do It for the Kids

Vince Vaughn and Seth Rogen were among the stars out last night at the Beverly Hills Hilton for the Fulfillment Fund's Annual Stars Gala. The organization works with disadvantaged youth to help them graduate from high school, get into college and then stay in school once they get there. Vince was looking a little more like his old self amongst pretty silly rumors that he is seeing Vanessa Williams (hey, random). Seeing the young whippersnapper Seth Rogen must be a little bit like looking into his past for Vince, right? Even if Vince were very much the Hollywood veteran in comparison, it would be pretty great to see those two team up together for a movie. Old school and new school Bromantic Comedy guys coming together.

TIME's 100 Get Their Influence On

Some of the best and the beautiful weren't too tired after Monday's big Gala to be honored at another. Tuesday marked the annual TIME 100 Most Influential People party -- and these folks made the list. John Mayer (yes, he's on the list) left his one beautiful brunette at home, but was happy to pose with another -- a stunning America Ferrera. Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett was looking much better than Monday, back to her usual luminescence. It's so wonderful to see Michael J. Fox out and about! Yays for everyone honored at the fancy pants event. I'd just love to see what Tina Fey and Martha Stewart chat about...
