Christina, Adam, Cee Lo, and Blake Give Us a Sneak Peek at The Voice's Second Season

Earlier this week, we stopped by the set of The Voice to hear from the singing competition’s four coaches: Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton. The sophomore season of the NBC reality competition will kick off in the prime post-Super Bowl spot on Feb. 5, and the foursome were on hand, along with host Carson Daly, to share a preview of what’s ahead in 2012. They talked about how the competitors have changed since season one, why they believe their show stands out among other TV talent contests, and how they’re staying involved in the careers of last year’s finalists. Here are some highlights:

Christina on next year’s format: “People wanted to see more of the blind auditions. That’s an amazing part of the show. It keeps all of us on our toes as judges, coaches, as viewers, as the contestant . . . and this year we have to choose 12 people to be on our team as opposed to last year, which there was only eight. So you’re going to see more of that [blind audition] moment.”
Adam on collaborating with last year’s champ Javier: “He’s finishing up his record. I just sang on one of his songs that Pharrell [Williams] did. It sounded amazing . . . it’s coming out soon.”
Blake on how season two's competitors are different: “I actually - which pisses me off still - had a guy ask me . . . I turned around and was telling him how I wanted him on my team, and giving him every reason why I should be his coach, and he said to me and whoever else it was: ‘I already know y’all like me. I want to know which one of you are going to keep me.’ Because he was already thinking ahead to those battle rounds. He knows what’s going to happen when we get to those battle rounds and he wants a commitment further than that, and that’s what we’re faced with because people watched the show last year and they know the game . . . So I told him to kiss my ass.”

Beyoncé Knowles Covers W's Music Issue Along With Christina Aguilera

Beyoncé Knowles and Christina Aguilera shared the honor of covering July's music edition of W. Both singers are at exciting points in their careers - Christina has found a new outlet on TV with NBC's The Voice while Beyoncé is gearing up for the release of her new album 4. Beyoncé spoke to the magazine about her vision and inspiration for the tracks, even revealing the important meaning of the record's title. Beyoncé said in W:

On her vision: "When I sing a song, I definitely have the image for the video in my mind. I kind of hear the choreography that will be in the video, and I can see how I’ll look, even before anyone - the record company, the director - has heard the song."
On her new record: "I wanted this record to come from a raw place. Playing Etta James in the movie Cadillac Records really changed me. It was a darker character, and I realized that if anything is too comfortable, I want to run from it. It’s no fun being safe."
On the symbolism of her album's title: "The fans have named the album 4. And four is my favorite number. It’s an important number in my life: the date of my birthday, my mom’s birthday, my husband’s birthday, the day I got married. Barack Obama is the 44th president, and I performed ‘At Last’ by Etta James at his inauguration."

Tina, Dax, Amy, and More TV Stars Celebrate Their Small-Screen Success at the NBC Upfronts

The NBC upfronts were packed with TV's hottest celebs in NYC yesterday. Christina Aguilera, Tina Fey, Joel McHale, and more were on hand for the event, which announces the network's small-screen schedules for the Fall season. Christina was there, along with Carson Daly, to promote The Voice, and she sat down on The Today Show this morning to talk about what attracted her to the judging job. Jenna Dewan was on hand for The Playboy Club, which also stars Eddie Cibrian, and she hung out with his wife, LeAnn Rimes, before the big press day. Pregnant Tina celebrated the renewal of 30 Rock, as did Parks and Recreation's Amy Poehler and Aziz Ansari. Amanda Peet talked up her new comedy with David Walton and Jeffrey Tambor, Bent, and shared that she will most likely bring her two daughters to the set when filming recommences. Christina Applegate stepped out following the January birth of her first child to chat about Up All Night with Maya Rudolph and Amy's husband, Will Arnett. Dax Shepard, Erika Christensen, and Lauren Graham represented Parenthood, and Nick Lachey made the quick trip to the Big Apple for The Sing-Off before heading back to LA.

4 Ways The Voice Is Different From American Idol

NBC's new singing competition series The Voice premieres tonight, with Carson Daly on board as host. Four musicians make up the judges' panel: Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, and Cee Lo Green. Like its competitor American Idol, the show will narrow down a pool of hopefuls to one victor, who'll be rewarded with $100,000 and a recording contract for Universal Music Group. But this isn't just an Idol clone: here are the four main differences that set it apart.

Blind auditions. When the contestants are first trying out, the coaches are turned away from them so that they're not influenced by the contestants' appearance or age; the only deciding factor is their voice.
The celebrity judges aren't just there to critique. Once the judges decide they like someone's voice, they're allowed to see them. At that point, the contestant becomes a part of that coach's team, and they then mentor the contestants to a win.
The judges are actually pitted against each other. Because each coach wants someone that they've coached to win, Shelton, Levine, Green, and Aguilera may have to fight over contestants to get them on their team. The arguments they'll have to provide to get the contestants to pick them may end up being the source of the most entertainment.
The furniture is interactive. The big fancy red seats that the judges sit in aren't just a place to recline; they turn away from the contestants, but at the push of a button, the seats automatically swivel the judge around to face the stage.
