NBC kicked off the Winter television critics press tour yesterday in Pasadena, CA, showing off their slate of new shows and bringing together their stars for an evening party. Jessica Simpson showed off her baby bump in sequins as she made a brief cameo at the event before heading home to give her feet a rest after a long day of promoting Fashion Star. Her fellow judge on that show, Nicole Richie, and their host, Elle Macpherson, both hit the red carpet as well. Christina Applegate and her onscreen Up All Night husband Will Arnett stayed close at the packed soiree. Chelsea Handler talked up Are You There Chelsea?, which premieres soon and has Laura Prepon playing the title role.

Christina Applegate Works All Day With Daughter Sadie by Her Side

Christina Applegate held her daughter Sadie Grace as she left the Beverly Hills set of Up All Night yesterday. The 10 month old got to visit her mom during a long day of production, which started with a 5 o'clock wake-up call for the actress. Christina worked with Blythe Danner, who will apparently be making a cameo on the comedy. Up All Night had a lot of you hooked after just one episode and the funny moments should keep coming when a new episode airs tomorrow. Just this morning Up All Night was picked up for a full season, making it one of the first freshman comedies of the year to receive the honors. Christina's costar Will Arnett will bring even more humor to the small screen when he returns to 30 Rock as Jack's nemesis Devon Banks during their upcoming season.

Pilot Scoop: Up All Night

Tonight is the debut of Up All Night, NBC's new comedy starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett as a couple adjusting to their life as parents. If you're on the fence about tuning in this evening, check out my pilot scoop on the first episode to see whether it sounds like something you'd enjoy.

What it's about: Applegate and Arnett play married couple Reagan and Chris, who have just become first-time parents. The show follows the pair as they try to get used to their new roles and routine: Chris has become a stay-at-home dad so that Reagan can go back to work full time. Maya Rudolph has a supporting part as Reagan's demanding but well-meaning boss Ava.

Where it works: I love Arnett as Chris, because it's one of the rare times we see the actor toning himself down to play an all-around nice guy. Not that I don't love his usual shtick, but it's great to see him expanding his range. Also, he, Applegate, and Rudolph are a killer comedy team in a pilot that has tons of laugh-out-loud moments and great writing.

Where it doesn't: If you're dealing with the similar work/life stress that Reagan and Chris are, this show might not be the escapist fare you're looking for.

You might like this show if: You like the fun, irreverent humor of Cougar Town and Happy Endings.

When is it on: Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Suck it in! New mama Christina Applegate appeared on The Tonight Show last night to talk about her highly anticipated new show Up All Night. On the way to tape the show, the actress sent out a hilariously revealing tweet that read, "On my way to the Tonight Show. Spend a little time with Jay. My spanx are so tight I feel I may faint. Good times . . ."

When Leno complimented the actress on her postbaby body, the never-shy Christina jokingly responded "Don't let all the girdles fool you! I have this thing on called a Mother Tucker. NBC Toasts Its Fall Lineup With John, Jenna, Rashida, and Many More Stars

The stars of NBC's shows, both old and new, gathered last night in LA to toast the upcoming season. Some actors from perennial hits of the network like Community and The Office welcomed the newcomers. Joel McHale horsed around with his costar Alison Brie, while John Krasinski and Ed Helms played together on the carpet. Rashida Jones will be back in Parks and Recreation, while Yvonne Strahovski and Zachary Levi will bring more Chuck. Christina Applegate is set to have her debut in just a few weeks when Up All Night airs, and another premiering program, The Playboy Club, was represented by its leading ladies Jenna Dewan and Amber Heard. Jenna and Amber were fresh from a TCA panel, where they discussed how The Playboy Club is different from Mad Men despite their sharing a '60s-era setting. Also, NBC's Fall premiere schedule was announced yesterday. Parenthood is the first to air on Sept. 13, with more debuts coming weekly until October. Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph, and Christina Applegate Swap Parenting Stories and Talk Up All Night

NBC's new comedy Up All Night took the stage at the Summer TCA, bringing three very familiar faces with it: Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph, and Christina Applegate. In the series, Applegate and Arnett play new parents who are trying to balance work and family while staying true to themselves. Rudolph plays Applegate's boss, though that's not going to stop her from sharing her parenting stories in the writers' room. In fact, the running theme of the panel was how they're connected by parenthood. Here's more from the panel:

The writers and showrunners are expecting to draw a lot of material from their own experience as parents. Rudolph said, "I've got three kids so I'm a crazy person. I've got stories to give stories to stories. The funny irony is that I'm the one without the kid on the show, but that won't stop me from chiming in."
Applegate quipped that her own daughter, Sadie, isn't as calm as the twin actresses who play her small-screen daughter. She also added that art is definitely imitating life, saying, "I'm still a mom who's up all night with her kid going to work. It definitely parallels a great deal."
Rudolph's onscreen persona will be that of a talk show host, not unlike Oprah. The rub? She'll be out of control backstage but totally in control for her show. Sounds like the perfect dichotomy for Rudolph, who spent plenty of time honing her Oprah impression on Saturday Night Live.
Applegate says she can especially relate to her character's need to stay hip even as a parent. She said, "I gave birth to my daughter at 39 years old, so I had many years of being completely self-obsessed and self-absorbed and doing what I wanted to do. There's a generation of people 39-40 who still say 'dude' a lot. I don't know if we've grown up entirely. I still feel like I'm in my early 20s. That's what these characters are - these sort of 'later in life' parents."
Arnett is returning to the TCA just one year after Running Wilde premiered (and was quickly canceled). It wasn't in his plan to give the small screen another shot so soon, but he said, "I wasn't really thinking about doing anything this year but I read this script and I immediately thought, 'Yeah this is something I relate to.' So whatever sort of limits I'd set for myself, they were immediately thrown out the window."
