Brad, Leo, and George Bring Their Good Looks Inside the AFI Awards

The AFI Awards got even more attractive when Brad Pitt showed up wearing a blue suit in LA this afternoon. George Clooney got the hotness started as he posed for cameras at the beginning of the event, while Leonardo DiCaprio followed in a sexy gray jacket and unbuttoned shirt. The men all have leading roles in films being honored by AFI, including Moneyball, The Descendants, and J. Edgar. Inside, Brad chatted with Clint Eastwood, George got together with his young costar Nick Krause, and Leo met up with his Romeo & Juliet leading lady, Claire Danes, who was on hand to represent Homeland. There were plenty more famous faces at the show since Armie Hammer, Jessica Chastain, Shailene Woodley, and Rooney Mara all popped up for the presentation as well.

J. Edgar: A Great Cast in a Dull Story

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to onscreen transformation, and takes on the FBI's first director, J. Edgar Hoover, in Clint Eastwood's biopic J. Edgar. With the help of makeup, a Southern accent, and some idiosyncrasies, DiCaprio seamlessly shows us Hoover as both the hero that took criminal investigation to a new level, and the villain who resorted to questionable methods to get there. Though DiCaprio's performance is engaging, the film isn't on par with Eastwood's finest films.

The story is told in Hoover's words, as he relates his career to various young men who are helping him transcribe his life story. The juxtaposition of Hoover's life as a young man (beginning at the start of his career in 1920) and his final years echoes the film's theme of dichotomy. As the FBI's director and a public figure, Hoover is arrogant, stubborn, and adamant about what he wants. Behind closed doors, Hoover is still a scared young man who is paranoid about losing his power and struggling with his sexual identity.

Hoover values loyalty more than anything else, which is where Armie Hammer and Naomi Watts come in, as Hoover's right-hand man and secretary who stick by his side until the day of his death. As career-focused Helen Gandy, Watts is restrained but solid, but it's Hammer as Clyde Tolson who really shines. Hoover hires Tolson as his associate director, but the relationship quickly comes much closer. As Tolson and Hoover dance on the line between utmost confidantes and lovers, Hammer humanizes a character who otherwise could be written off as a tall drink of water who lingers in the shadows behind Hoover.

Eastwood is successful in taking us back in time, through decades of Communism, Prohibition, and war, in a way that feels authentic. The film is peppered with notable public figures that run the gamut from Richard Nixon to Charles Lindbergh to Shirley Temple. Eastwood uses notable events like Hoover's investigation of the Lindbergh kidnapping to tell the story, but he doesn't go deep enough to create a gripping film. We scratch the surface of the events that shaped Hoover's career and the secrets he kept hidden, but the film falls short of truly striking a chord with the audience.

Clint Eastwood finds drama in Hoover's private life, but he treads lightly instead of diving in headfirst with J. Edgar, and the portrait he paints feels incomplete. He provides us with all of the key facts but doesn't fully patch them together into a compelling story.

Leonardo DiCaprio joined forces with his J. Edgar director Clint Eastwood last night for the LA premiere of their movie. It was an extra-special evening, since J. Edgar opened the AFI Film Festival. Along with Leo on the red carpet were other stars of the film like Ed Westwick, Naomi Watts, and Armie Hammer. Naomi wore Stella McCartney to pose for photos along with her partner Liev Scheriber, while Armie, who shares a kiss with Leo in the film, couldn't contain his real-life affection for wife Elizabeth Chambers.

The role of legendary FBI director J. Edgar Hoover has earned Leo a lot of Oscar buzz ahead of the film's release on Friday. To promote the biopic, Leonardo spoke with Time about what he and Hoover have in common. Leo said, "I identified with his ambition. I've been incredibly ambitious ever since I was young and, in some respects, have had no reservations about going for things I've wanted without questioning what the result will be. . . .There are a lot of pitfalls to success, and one is not listening to criticism. One of the most important things you can do is hear criticism of yourself and embrace it, whether it be - in my case - artistic or personal."

Gisele Bundchen wore Oscar de la Renta on the red carpet at the AFI Life Achievement Award honoring Morgan Freeman held last night at LA's Sony Pictures Studios. The supermodel said hello to the man himself, hugging Morgan and the Brazilian TV presenter Hebe Camargo. Gisele also caught up with Morgan's daughter Alexia before moving inside to mingle with other celeb guests like Clint Eastwood, Matthew Broderick, Matthew McConaughey, Casey Affleck, Betty White, and Helen Mirren. Morgan's Amistad costar Matthew McConaughey rocked a new look with his handlebar mustache, though his girlfriend, Camila Alves, didn't seem to mind the new facial fuzz. Morgan said a few words about his career and humbly acknowledged one special role in Bruce Almighty. Morgan Freeman said of his AFI honor, "I should be ashamed to say that sooner or later, I knew that someone was going to call on me to play God. I just had to be sure that when I said OK, that it was a comedy."

The duo got together earlier this month to begin work on the project, in which Leo plays the first director of the FBI, J. Armie joined Leo for a long night just last Thursday, and recently chatted with us about the much-talked-about kisses he and Leo are rumored to share on screen. Leo kicked off the day lounging in a pair of white pajamas, later changing into a hot tux for a night shoot with The Social Network's Armie Hammer. We got a first look at Leo dressed up in his period costume earlier this week, and he was once again joined by costar Judi Dench. Leo's now fully focused on his movie with Clint, though he'll likely get a break in the coming weeks to support a past project. His Christopher Nolan-helmed Inception is nominated in the category of best picture at the Oscars, and we'll see if Leo makes his latest award season appearance on the 27th - in the meantime, make sure to fill out Buzz's ballot with your predictions for the year's Academy Award winners!

The 63rd annual DGA Awards brought together tons of big names in Hollywood last night. The King's Speech took home the top honors, proving that this award season it really is anyone's game when it comes to best picture. Natalie Portman stuck by The Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky and spoke about getting all dressed up during her pregnancy, saying, "There's so much going on, I'll just try not to trip at any point! I'm trying to protect my future child." Natalie opted for Michael Kors and Aldo heels for the Saturday evening event, and she'll be doing it all again today for the SAGs. Armie Hammer and Andrew Garfield represented the guys of The Social Network while Jesse Eisenberg was across the country hosting SNL with special guest Mark Zuckerberg. Leonardo DiCaprio chatted with Clint Eastwood, and Amy Adams celebrated another huge week, which included receiving an Oscar nomination. Her costar Melissa Leo got a nod in the same category, and their The Fighter's David O. Russell says picking a winner between the two would be like "living through Sophie's Choice."
