Safe House: A Standout Thriller

While working for the CIA may seem like a dream job, Matt Weston's (Ryan Reynolds) current position at a Safe House is certainly no picnic. He's a new agent, stationed alone in South Africa, waiting for the chance that he will have a "house guest" (someone who is taken prisoner by the CIA.) Matt's desperately trying to get some field experience so he can be stationed in some other city where he can see a little action. After a year of boredom, his wish comes true when Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) arrives.

I was constantly on the edge of my seat throughout the film, and felt everyone in the theater being equally enraptured with what was unraveling before our eyes. Safe House has high-stakes moments cut with sardonic, nonchalant comedy that Reynolds and Washington both pull off nicely. I felt connected to everyone's struggles, but the plot kept me unsure if I wanted the good guy or the bad guy to come out on top. Ryan Reynolds Premieres Safe House With Denzel, but Without Blake

Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington teamed up last night for their NYC premiere of Safe House. Denzel posed on the red carpet with his wife Pauletta, though Ryan's real-life leading lady, Blake Lively, sat the event out. A pregnant Molly Sims stepped out for the screening, showing off her baby bump alongside husband Scott Stuber. There has been lots of time for Ryan and Denzel to bond over the last few weeks as they promoted the film. They even took a quick trip to Spain, where they had a photocall and a fun visit to the set of El Hormiguero. Ryan and Denzel filmed the picture last Spring and Summer in South Africa. They'll see if all the hard work pays off when the movie hits theaters this Friday on Feb. 10.

Ryan and Denzel Fall Victim to the Giggles While Talking Up Safe House

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds continued their Safe House promotional tour yesterday with a stop by Spanish television's El Hormiguero. The variety show has hosted a wide range of A-list celebrities over the years, including Jennifer Aniston and Tom Cruise. The program gets the stars involved in puppet shows, magic tricks and science experiments. For his part, Denzel joined in the fun by attempting a complicated pool shot while Ryan tried to pull off an optical illusion.

The guys are charming their way across Europe and are scheduled to blitz NYC next week with appearances on The Late Show and Live With Kelly. Their stop in the Big Apple might give Ryan a chance to catch up with girlfriend Blake Lively, who is back to work on the set of Gossip Girl. Things seems to be going well for the couple while Ryan and ex Scarlett Johansson listed their LA home for $3.65 million earlier this week. Ryan and Scarlett shared the Los Feliz ranch during their marriage, but both have since moved on to other properties. She's also been spotted holding hands with new boyfriend Nate Naylor on the East Coast.

Ryan Plays It Safe in Spain as Blake Celebrates Gossip Girl's 100th Episode

Ryan Reynolds joined Denzel Washington and Safe House director Daniel Espinosa for a photocall in Madrid today. The trio are kicking off their international press tour from Spain before making their way back to the States. Ryan and Denzel shot the CIA thriller in South Africa last year, and since then, Ryan's sparked up a romance with his former Green Lantern costar Blake Lively.

Blake and Ryan spent Thanksgiving together at her sister's Park City, UT bed and breakfast, Johnson Mill Bed & Breakfast, and then celebrated Christmas with his family in Vancouver. The couple were recently spotted on a romantic getaway to Louisiana where Blake and Ryan explored New Orleans on foot. Last night, Blake's 100th episode of Gossip Girl aired and it seems fans are one step closer to discovering Gossip Girl's true identity - get all the OMG moments from Blair's royal wedding including Georgina's return and Serena's big confession.

Safe House Trailer: Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds Play Good Cop, Bad Cop

The trailer for Safe House seems like a run-of-the-mill action flick, but the leading men - Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds - make the preview worth a look. Washington plays a badass CIA agent named Tobin Frost, who's gone rogue and is sent to a safe house in South Africa. Reynolds plays eager beaver young agent Matt Weston, who has to move Washington's character to another location when the safe house falls under attack.

What ensues is a mind game, as Frost gets inside Weston's brain about the attack and maybe even convinces him to go rogue. The trailer is rife with explosions and high-speed car chases, but I'm hoping the actual film will have more substance than what we see here (which isn't exactly breaking any new ground.) Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington teamed up to shoot Safe House in Capetown today. Ryan, who earned a spot on the Vanity Fair Hollywood issue's star-studded cover, touched down in South Africa earlier this month to start shooting the thriller. He was even spotted looking sexy riding a motorcycle on set yesterday. It's been a while since we last saw your Valentine's Day dream date on the big screen, but he has two completed projects hitting theaters this Summer - The Change-Up and Green Lantern. He's also joining forces with Emma Stone on the upcoming animated movie The Croods. Ryan has been lying low and focusing on work since his split from Scarlett Johansson was announced just before the holidays, and while a flurry of rumors briefly linked him to his former costar and friend Sandra Bullock, she was quick to laugh off those stories.

Unstoppable: Entertainment at High Speeds

Full disclosure: I went into Unstoppable expecting to be bored. How could a film about a train possibly keep me entertained for more than twenty minutes? But the movie is like watching a car chase on TV (and I mean that in the best possible way). There's not a ton of plot (it really is just a runaway train), and it doesn't dwell on character development - but you'll still get sucked into the nonstop action.

Chris Pine stars as Will, a railroad newbie assigned to work under the watch of veteran engineer Frank (Denzel Washington). It's their first day on the job together, and a challenging one at that. The fiasco begins when two dim-witted railroad employees working at a local outpost accidentally let one of the cargo-carrying locomotives get away from them. It's a classic scenario of whatever can go wrong, will go wrong, but that's not the case with the movie itself. In fact, the movie gets a lot right. To find out what I mean,

As the unmanned train speeds toward a populated area with explosives on board, railway bigwigs (and a dispatcher played by Rosario Dawson) try everything in their power to put it to a stop. Despite their best efforts, they're up a creek, er, track with no other options. That's when Will and Frank step in. Though they butt heads, they'll work together, risk their lives, and win one for blue-collar guys everywhere.

The film is loosely inspired by real-life events, so you can probably surmise that everything is going to turn out okay (these inspirational "based on a true story" films rarely have unhappy endings). But even though the outcome is fairly clear, the movie still keeps you on the edge of your seat. Like the train, it starts off slower to set up the plot, but once it gets going, the speed is enjoyably frenetic. Will the train derail? Explode? And what about the school children who are on a different train but on the same track?

Unstoppable is what it is: mindless, yet engaging entertainment. It keeps things simple to its benefit, and you'll be happy to be along for the ride.
