Ed Burns is a classic New Yorker, which is just part of what made him perfect for the role of an NYPD cop in Man on a Ledge. We sat down with Ed at the press junket to talk about why he loves shooting close to home and what he has coming up in the city he loves so much. Ed also chatted about the scrutiny he gets from the real NY cops in his family, who are always the first to point out when he does something wrong on the big screen. Christy Turlington Just Wants to Feed People

Christy Turlington happily posed for photos with her husband Ed Burns and their children for the August issue of Vogue. She took a break from her rigorous schedule of studying for a master's in public health and working on a documentary about maternal issues to chat with the magazine about her life. Christy opened up about her philanthropic causes and how her priorities have changed since her modeling days. She said:

On her childhood: "I skipped that self-critical place that's dangerous for any teenager. I kind of figured, If Vogue thinks I look OK, I probably look OK. . . Right away I didn't like the identity of being a full-time model. The cliché of it! The clubs. . . My income surpassed my dad's in my first year of modeling - and my dad made a good living. That puts you in a different place in your family, and the power dynamic shifts. I kind of liked the power in a weird way, but I was confused by it."
On Ed: "There was something about Eddie that was completely good and healthy. He's such an optimist, a relaxed person who doesn't get stressed out. When things don't go the way I plan them, I get more abrupt, not the friendly, open me that the rest of the world sees. He's certainly seen all of my selves. . . It's better to be known than loved. I mean known inside, deeply known. When somebody knows you, they know - it's not ephemeral, it's not a state or a stage."
On her future: "Now I'm 40 and getting this degree, I might be on the cusp of the career that I always wanted. . . I can't justify [shopping for trendy expensive clothes] - honestly, I'd rather feed people."

Julia Showers Tom With Love and a Few Naughty Words

Tom Hanks was the man of the hour last night at the 36th Film Society of Lincoln Center's Gala in NYC. Rita Wilson sparkled on his arm, while Ron Howard framed the perfect shot of Tom and Julia Roberts. Fresh off her trip to Venice, Charlize couldn't help but gush about Salma Hayek's wedding and how beautiful the bride looked in her gown. Julia got the most attention of the night due to her miniroast of Tom. She teased him about a few of his past movies and used the f-word so many times to describe everything from his wife's body to wearing the same dress as his publicist that Tom called out her potty mouth in his own speech.

TV Tonight: Generation Kiill

In a Summer where HBO is lacking any of its signature series, the network's hopes must be sky-high for Generation Kill. The seven-episode miniseries from The Wire's David Simon and Ed Burns premieres Sunday night, and from the early reviews, it seems like it's everything I'd expect from a Simon/Burns project.

What that means: On the plus side, it's well-written, in-depth, and revealing. This review called it "rewarding in its complexity," not unlike The Wire. That, of course, comes with an inherent minus: The series is complex and not always easy to watch - or even tell who's who, especially in the first episode or two.

Personally, I'm planning to watch with a glossary, a chain of command chart, and a map at the ready; they're all available over here. Even if it is confusing at first, I have confidence that it will pay off in the end. (Also, special note for Wire fans: James Ransone, who played Ziggy in season two, has a major role.)

First Look: Generation Kill on HBO

HBO may not have any series on its schedule for the Summer, but it does have Generation Kill, a seven-part miniseries about the new face of the American military.

The miniseries, written by The Wire's David Simon and Ed Burns, is based on a book of the same name by Rolling Stone writer Evan Wright. In 2003, Wright was embedded with a Marine Corps special operations unit with the motto "Swift, Silent, Deadly." The book painted a portrait of the soldiers in his unit as they lived on the front lines of a war that was then just beginning.

Though Simon and Burns don't know the military nearly as well as they knew Baltimore, Generation Kill seems like a logical step after The Wire nonetheless. The stories of rank-and-file soldiers confronting a military bureaucracy probably have something in common with those of rank-and-file police officers, dock workers, and teachers confronting a machine much larger than themselves. Plus, Simon and Burns have experience bringing a certain dark humor to even the most grim and gritty situation.

Gwyneth, Helena, Petra and Stephen Can-Do

Spring weather may still be just a tease in NYC, but the ladies went legs, legs, legs at the Food Bank For New York City's 5th Annual Can-Do Awards and 25th Anniversary last night. Fresh from the weekend's big celebrity wedding in Manhattan, Gwyneth Paltrow had her mom Blythe Danner by her side for the night and showed off those stems posing with Helena Christensen. Petra Nemcova was also looking all glam on the red carpet, but less conspicuous without a certain A-List actor date on her arm. All teasing aside and as usual, big credit goes to all the celebs who took the time to come out for such a good cause last night.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Welcomes New Queen: Madonna

The Waldorf-Astoria in NYC rocked last night to welcome the newest class of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Madonna looked happy to accept the honor and while Guy Ritchie wasn't around, her Hard Candy collaborator Justin Timberlake was there to help celebrate. Fellow inductees include John Mellencamp and Leonard Cohen. Madonna didn't sing, but she did ask Iggy Pop to come and play which he did with no shirt (of course). On stage Madonna said, "Thirty-five years later, people are still encouraging me to believe in my dreams. What more could I ask for?" While Justin took a shot at a certain ex, "The world is full of Madonna wannabes. I might have even dated a couple, but there is truly only one Madonna." Seems a little unnecessary of JT, but congrats to all the new Rock and Roll Hall of Famers!

In typical Madonna fashion she kept things risqué even without any racy performance - she joked on stage about telling JT to drop his pants to give him a B12 shot and her past drug use including "smoking a joint" when she met her publicist Liz Rosenberg and taking ecstasy with a music exec after giving him her first demo. Yeah, I don't think 50's going to slow her down any at all.
