Eddie Murphy Drops Out as Host of the Oscars

The 2012 Oscars is already getting dramatic, and I'm not even talking about the nominees. Following the news that producer Brett Ratner has pulled out of the show in the wake of some controversial comments, Eddie Murphy has just withdrawn as host. Murphy signed on to emcee the show back in September, and this would have been his first time hosting the awards. He was hired by Ratner, the director on his recent release Tower Heist, and Murphy commented on his and Ratner's exits, saying:

"First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

Tower Heist: A Convoluted Caper

What would Robin Hood do if he hit Wall Street? Tower Heist gives us an inkling with Josh Kovacs (Ben Stiller), the general manager of a luxury New York apartment complex. Josh rounds up the building's not-quite-merry employees to rob penthouse resident Arthur Shaw, after discovering the mogul has squandered the staff's savings in a Ponzi scheme. The ragtag group offers plenty of laughs along the way with their criminal inexperience, but their bumbling antics can't cover-up a heist that is too far-fetched to be true.

Part of the reason the humor fails to distract from the improbable caper is due to the fact that it's spread thin among the film's all-star cast, which also includes Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni, and Casey Affleck. The ensemble is so large that the film is forced to parcel out the humor among too many characters, robbing anyone of the chance to really stand out. Everyone receives an equal share of one-liners, but I felt certain characters could have developed jokes into side-splitting humor had they only received more screen time. Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, and Matthew Broderick got together last night for the NYC premiere of their comedy caper Tower Heist. Sarah Jessica Parker, wearing a tiered Narciso Rodriguez dress and Manolo Blahnik stilettos, was out late on a school night with her 8-year-old James Wilkie to show their love and support to Matthew. Ben cozied up to his lovely wife, Christine Taylor, on the red carpet while costars Eddie, Casey Affleck, Gabourey Sidibe, and Tea Leoni posed for photos before heading into the Ziegfeld Theatre. The screening brought out a variety of famous faces like Serena Williams, Donald Trump, Doutzen Kroes, and Diddy. Director Brett Ratner moved the afterparty to Stone Rose Lounge where he and the stars of the film partied late into the night alongside Jason Sudeikis and Mary-Kate Olsen.

Eddie Murphy to Host the Oscars: Love It or Leave It?

Director Brett Ratner is producing next year's Oscars, and he has chosen Eddie Murphy to host the show. Earlier this year, Billy Crystal had expressed interest, but Murphy, who recently worked with Ratner on Tower Heist, has come out on top.

Even though the movies Murphy has appeared in over the last few years haven't been my favorites, I actually think he'll be entertaining. Let's face it - the critically panned hosting job of James Franco and Anne Hathaway won't be a hard act to follow, and Murphy has the advantage of years of stand-up comedy experience. What do you think - will Murphy be a good Oscar host, or do you have someone else in mind for the job?

Tower Heist Trailer: Eddie Murphy Is Funny Again?

The preview for Tower Heist looks a little like Ocean's 11 meets Horrible Bosses. The film follows the staff of a hoity-toity luxury building in NYC, as they try to steal $20 million from one of the building's tenants after the tenant loses their money in a Ponzi scheme. The group (which is led by Ben Stiller and includes Casey Affleck and Matthew Broderick) doesn't know the first thing about grand larceny, and so they seek the help of a wise-cracking criminal, played by Eddie Murphy.

Though the movie looks pretty run-of-the-mill, it's good to see Murphy back to his tried and true shtick. I'm also a fan of the cast, though Stiller and Gabourey Sidibe are showing off some interesting accents. The movie hits theaters in November, but you can watch the trailer when you

George Clooney and His "Official A-List" Bud Tom Hanks Do Lunch With the President

George Clooney had a big smile on his face yesterday when he stepped out for a President Obama fundraiser at LA's Tavern restaurant. He was among other famous Hollywood Democrats like Tom Hanks, Eddie Murphy, and Steven Spielberg to attend the exclusive event. It was a big day for Tom, whose cameo on the 100th episode of 30 Rock aired last night. Tom played a knitting and humming version himself in a hilarious segment of the hour-long installment, and he, in a fit of anger with Tracy Morgan's Tracy Jordan character, calls George Clooney to chat about the "official A-List" and the club's webmaster, Brad Pitt! Tom's next foray into acting will be on the big screen when his Larry Crowne, which he directed, hits theaters in July. George, meanwhile, recently wrapped up his own behind-the-lens endeavor, The Ides of March.

Pirates, Princes, and a Top Gun Celebrate Jerry Bruckheimer

The Mann Chinese Theater in LA was hopping with celebrities last night in attendance for three big Jerry Bruckheimer events. The afternoon kicked off with Jerry's Hollywood Walk of Fame dedication followed by the Prince of Persia premiere while his films Armageddon, Pirates of the Caribbean, and National Treasure simultaneously screened. Orlando Bloom spoke to the audience at the Pirates screening while Justin Bartha and Jon Voight shared their experiences with the National Treasure franchise. Stars from the present and past mingled during the events - Prince of Persia star Jake Gyllenhaal even posed with Top Gun legend Tom Cruise. The fun continued into the night when the party moved to the Hollywood & Highland Ballroom, where Jake hopefully showed off some of those famous dance moves.
