Another Happy Day Trailer: Nothing Brings a Dysfunctional Family Together Like a Wedding

There's something very entertaining about watching a messed up family act out their craziness onscreen, and the dark comedy Another Happy Day has dysfunction to spare. Bitter exes Lynn (Ellen Barkin) and Paul (Thomas Haden Church) are forced to interact when their oldest son gets married, and the problems of their other children, including Kate Bosworth and Ezra Miller, are brought up during the festivities (think drug problems and rehab stints). Meanwhile, Lynn has to confront her distaste for her ex-husband's current wife, played by Demi Moore.

The trailer has a sinister tone to it (I blame the intense music playing over the family spats), but there are some funny one-liners delivered by up-and-coming actor Miller, who already appears to be the standout from the preview alone. Kate Bosworth Wears White on the Red Carpet at the Deauville Film Festival

Kate Bosworth stepped out in a sexy Chanel dress for the premiere of Another Happy Day at the Deauville Film Festival in France on Sunday. The actress was back on the red carpet after attending Saturday's opening ceremony with director Michael Polish. Kate and Michael showed affection for the cameras after also recently being spotted on a few dates around LA, including a night out at the Coldplay concert in May. Kate seems to be moving on since her relationship with Alexander Skarsgard ended, and it appears he's doing the same. Alexander mingled with a few ladies during his weekend in the Hamptons and he apparently left the Surf Lodge with one in particular following a late night.

Among the Broadway stars, we spotted a few familiar faces - the always-elegant Ellen Barkin in lace-adorned L'Wren Scott; supermodel legend Christie Brinkley in a silky, cobalt blue Zuhair Murad; and presenter Catherine Zeta-Jones stunning in a sparkly, red Elie Saab. We also loved up-and-coming star style, like Lily Rabe's white Prabal Gurung gown and Jennifer Damiano in sparkly Reem Acra. Kate Bosworth Pulls Happy Double Duty With Demi and Little Birds at Sundance

Kate Bosworth made her Sundance debut with not one but two movie premieres yesterday to cap off a very star-studded weekend. The actress says she's never been to the festival before but was eager to brave the cold to show off her pair of projects. First up was Another Happy Day, in which she costars with Demi Moore and Ellen Barkin. Kate sported a daring backless Chloe dress and looked excited to reunite with Demi, Ellen, and the rest of the cast on their red carpet, and later Kate gushed about the experience of working with the strong, powerful "forces of nature" whom she looks up to. In the evening, Kate covered up her sexy frock with a Burberry coat for the Little Birds screening, where the red carpet was slightly more open to the elements. Kate only has a small role in the film, though she was thrilled to show off the female coming-of-age story. Kate says she doesn't have much time to relax and enjoy the Park City scene before heading back to LA. Shia and Carey Glam Up the Cannes Red Carpet With Kate, Salma, Gael, and Diego

The cast of Money Never Sleeps wrapped up their afternoon press obligations and got black-tie ready for their big premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Lovebirds Carey Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf kept their distance on the red carpet, as he stuck with Michael Douglas and she posed with Josh Brolin. Despite recent speculation on the state of Josh's marriage, his wife, Diane Lane, was out this evening to support his latest big-screen endeavor.

Kate Beckinsale put on her latest show-stopping dress to take in Shia and Carey's movie as a juror. Salma Hayek was once again with husband Francois-Henri Pinault, this time clad in a gown matching the red carpet. BFFs Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, meanwhile, joined young actors Christopher and Gerardo Ruiz-Esparza for a screening of Abel. The project is Diego's directorial debut, while Gael served as producer. Gael also has Letters to Juliet hitting theaters this weekend, and we recently caught up with him to discuss love letters and eating well - make sure to check out Buzz's review.

Happy Tears: A Strange Mix of Emotions

Familial relationships are often ripe for dramatic conflict and a few sniffles, and Happy Tears positions itself as such. Jayne (Parker Posey) and Laura (Demi Moore) are sisters who visit their father Joe (Rip Torn), a perverted yet somehow charming old man suffering from a serious case of dementia. Like many movie siblings, they're polar opposites: Jayne is the spoiled younger sister who lives in La La Land; Laura is more practically minded and down to earth.

Their bond (and sometimes hatred) often feels real (hey, they even look like sisters!) and could have made for a nice, simple drama on its own. Instead, the film gets lost in the midst of imagined sequences in Jayne's mind, making you wonder what kind of film Happy Tears really is. A sweet drama? A dark comedy? An art house film? As one of the dream scenes takes a naked Jayne flying on a giant jellyfish, I found myself wishing that the film had just stayed grounded.

The story takes off as Jayne arrives at Joe's broken-down home, immediately calling him "daddy" with a smile, not even recognizing that he's sitting in the kitchen apparently unaware that he has no shirt on. Despite her grand illusions of the man he used to be, present-day Joe is incontinent and dying, and he's taken up with a crack whore (Ellen Barkin) who's perhaps even nuttier than he is. But even with the mounting evidence, Jayne continues to don her rose-colored glasses, opting instead to search for buried treasure in his backyard (a tale he used to tell the girls as kids) and losing herself in childhood memories. She has to come to grips with who her father is as a person and her own less-than-perfect life, and it's Laura who has to help her. Demi Moore pulls off a hardened but strong woman while Posey, never one to stray from quirky roles, displays a nice undercurrent of self-doubt alongside her delirium. Barkin and Torn are equal parts hilarious and sad. The actors have an easier time balancing a dual nature than the film does. As Jayne jumps around in her imagination, we too abruptly switch from reality to fiction. As a result, the tone of the film dabbles in tender, trippy, and darkly funny, but these elements compete rather than complement each other. As we near the finale, the film tries to salvage itself by coming back to earth on a sweet note, but such an ending, while nice, unfortunately can't compensate for its strangeness.

Matt Damon Has Two Ladies and One Cameo

Matt Damon spent his Friday night hard at work on The Adjustment Bureau in NYC. He was joined by Emily Blunt for the late shoot, and his Ocean's Thirteen costar Ellen Barkin even dropped by to say hello. Matt's currently all about his film project, but he took a little time last week to speak about his ONEXONE charity at the Clinton Global Initiative. He'll also be showing up to promote his organization on the season finale of Entourage, and a recently leaked video from the set shows an enraged-acting Matt telling off Adrian Grenier's Vince - check out the video below.

2009 Sundance Spotlight: Brooklyn's Finest, The Informers, 500 Days of Summer

While I won't be heading down to the 2009 Sundance Film Festival this year, I will be sorting through the humongous pile of festival entries to share with you some of the films I think look most promising. From quirky documentaries to talented young filmmaker debuts to a potential runaway hit, Sundance is filled with entertainment possibilities. Here are today's selections:

Brooklyn's Finest
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Brooklyn's Finest just became this year's first sale at Sundance. Apparently "Senator Distribution nabbed North American rights . . . on Saturday night, 24 hours after its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. . . Senator says it will release the film in the fourth quarter for awards consideration." According to Senator president Mark Urman, the company "went into aggressive pursuit right after Friday's screening." Wow! All of this spells good things for the cop drama which features a stellar cast (Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, Ellen Barkin). The plot is described as: "Three unconnected Brooklyn cops wind up at the same deadly location after enduring vastly different career paths." The guy responsible for the screenplay has a unique and intriguing story himself (you can read about it here). No clips available just yet, but now that it's been purchased I'm sure we'll hear and see much more about this film in the future.

Two more great-looking movies, with talented folks like Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Mickey Rourke, if you

read more. The Informers Well, the long-awaited movie adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's collection of short stories is upon us. The movie, starring a whole lot of people from the '80s and early '90s (most notably Mickey Rourke, continuing his amazing career comeback) is about LA in the '80s in all its beautiful, indulgent, moral-decaying glory. The Informers also includes Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Billy Bob Thornton, Chris Isaak, and the late Brad Renfro (his final role). I have mixed feelings about this movie, but then again, any trailer that includes a song by A Flock of Seagulls deserves a chance in my book. FYI: The trailer for The Informers below is not suitable for work due to some topless ladies. Proceed with caution: 500 Days of Summer Oh, man. Could these two be cuter together? I think not. I was so excited when this casting news first came out and I'm even more thrilled that the movie's premiering at Sundance (to not-bad reviews so far) and has a release date (July 24) and now has a super cute teaser trailer (see below!). At first glance, the movie's description sounds like a little tale of unrequited love (boy loves girl, girl doesn't believe in love) but here's the part that got me really curious: "energized by dance numbers, split screens, and two dynamic performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel." Citing a lack of stories to tell in a second season, HBO won't be bringing back Tell Me You Love Me after all, Zap2it reports.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Ridley Scott's Nottingham movie (starring Russell Crowe as Sheriff of Nottingham and Sienna Miller as Maid Marion) has been "indefinitely postponed."
Alexis Bledel and Scott Porter are joining Julio DePietro's romantic comedy The Good Guy, ComingSoon reports.
Harvey Keitel will play a detective in ABC's Life on Mars, marking the first time he's taken a regular TV role, the New York Times reports.
Billboard has the news that Coldplay's album Viva la Vida climbed back to the top spot on the U.K. charts.
Showtime is developing a drama about Studio 54 called Studio, writes Hollywood Reporter.
Ellen Barkin, Ving Rhames and Rob Corddry will star in the indie comedy Rogues Gallery, Variety writes.
Family Guy showrunner David A. Goodman will adapt Blatant Comics's Last Blood into a horror film, according to ComingSoon.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Nelly will guest-star on CSI: NY as a club owner.
