We caught up with Larry and newcomer Emily Mortimer at the LA junket recently, where the pair chatted about what it was like seeing the film with their kids. Zooey, Rashida, Elizabeth, and Emily Celebrate Their Idiot Brother Paul Rudd

My Idiot Brother is one of the most anticipated movies at Sundance this year, and last night the star-studded cast stepped out for their big premiere. Paul Rudd is at the center of this quirky comedy, which both Becky from Buzz and I thoroughly enjoyed and was picked up by The Weinstein Company already. During a Q&A after the film, he joked about working so many times with Elizabeth Banks, who plays one of his sisters in the project. She stayed warm in a chic Burberry coat while Zooey Deschanel dared to wear a little Marc Jacobs dress and H&M heels despite the freezing temperatures and icy conditions. Zooey and Rashida Jones play a couple in My Idiot Brother and both women had nothing but glowing things to say about each other. Emily Mortimer revealed that she loves that she doesn't have to get dressed up for Sundance and joked about how fun it is that the altitude makes you get drunk very easily. Sundance Snapshot: My Idiot Brother

I've been excited about My Idiot Brother pretty much since the full cast was announced back in June, so catching the film's premiere at Sundance this weekend was a huge treat. The movie follows Paul Rudd as an unflappable optimist whose devotion to honesty gets him into one sticky situation after another, particularly when he starts couch hopping between his three sisters. Though I had already mentally set the bar pretty high, I was pleased to find a comedy that's smart, fresh, and often very funny. (Apparently I wasn't the only one: the film was snatched up by the Weinstein Company just hours after the premiere.)

Who's behind it? Director Jesse Peretz has compiled a dream cast of characters headlined by Paul Rudd and including Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, Steve Coogan, and Adam Scott.
What's it about? Rudd plays Ned, a free-spirited farmer (read: crunchy hippie), whose positive attitude and unyielding faith in the people around him often gets in the way of his sense of judgment. Ned is arrested for selling marijuana to a police officer (who claimed he was having a bad week and in need of a pick-me-up), and is released from prison eight months later. When his girlfriend kicks him off their farm, Ned is shuttled around between his mother and three sisters where he unintentionally meddles in each of their own busy lives and personal issues.

Paul Rudd Nabs Fab Four: Deschanel, Banks, Jones, Mortimer

Big ups to the commenters who suggested Zooey Deschanel to play Paul Rudd's sister in his upcoming comedy My Idiot Brother: she's just signed on, along with three other amazing actresses! Emily Mortimer and Elizabeth Banks will portray Rudd's two other sisters - and get this, Rashida Jones has been cast in the part of Deschanel's girlfriend.

Don't pinch yourself: it's totally true. The character backgrounds are even more intriguing: Banks is a single journalist on the verge of her big break, Deschanel's a flake who is sabotaging her relationship, and Mortimer is an alpha mom who may be close to divorce. As their brother, Rudd's character will invade their lives and bring chaos and happiness.

The big question is: which part am I most excited about? Deschanel and Jones as a couple? The trio of ladies I love as Rudd's sisters? This is tough stuff.

Emily Blunt Films With Matt and Poses With John

Emily Blunt joined Matt Damon Monday for a long afternoon on the NYC set of The Adjustment Bureau. After working on a few scenes, they took a quick lunch break before heading home afterward in the dark. Emily had another late night yesterday, when she joined fiance John Krasinski for a premiere of The Red Shoes. We've been pondering what it would be like if John's The Office met Mad Men, but he was all about posing and smiling with Emily as they checked out the movie alongside newly announced Oscar host Alec Baldwin.

Kate and Kirsten Help Wrap Up the Spring Fashion Fun

The 2009 Spring fashion season came to a close in Paris last night after a whirlwind month of shows in New York, London, and Milan. Lots of stars were out to celebrate, with Emma Watson, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell taking in YSL and Chanel while Dita von Teese and Lenny Kravitz checked out Marc Jacobs's newest work at Louis Vuitton. After shopping around the city, Kate Bosworth brought her man James Rousseau to the Miu Miu show last night along with Kirsten Dunst, who is a former face of the brand. Kirsten also made time for some sightseeing, which hopefully kept her mind off the less-than-stellar opening of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

Transsiberian: Spooky But Irritating

In select cities, a little indie thriller titled Transsiberian quietly opened over the weekend and did fairly well in the indie market (despite the long shadow cast by The Dark Knight's opening), which frankly surprises me. With some folks calling the movie "Hitchcockian" in its suspense, and featuring a cast that includes the enigmatic Emily Mortimer and a shape-shifting Ben Kingsley, I was interested in seeing it myself. But now I kinda wish I hadn't.

Emily Mortimer and Woody Harrelson play Americans Roy and Jesse, who are taking a train through Russia after completing a missionary assignment teaching English in China. Roy is your typical all-American tourist, boisterous, over-eager and naive, while Jesse has worked hard to get over her bad girl past, in which she struggled with alcohol and drug addiction. They meet another young couple, Carlos (Eduardo Noriega) and Abby (Kate Mara), who turn out to have some shady secrets of their own, and Carlos manages to rope Jesse into a dangerous world of drug trafficking. Enter the two-faced Russian cop Grinko (Ben Kingsley) who has interests in Carlos's activities extending beyond official police work. When Carlos goes missing and Jesse was the last to see him, Grinko focuses all his energies on the American couple, and the movie kinda derails from there. To see what I mean,

In terms of setting up a chilling, unfamiliar atmosphere in which terrible things could happen, director Brad Anderson succeeds on all counts. The snow white light of middle-of-nowhere Russia casts everything in a filmy gray, and the bulk of the story takes place on a speeding train, evoking a panicky feeling of being trapped in an foreign country in close quarters with untrustworthy people. Certainly, there are moments of genuine suspense, and the setting is such that this could have been a real nail-biter. But then someone talks, or does something incredibly dumb, and it's all over.

The most debilitating aspect of Transsiberian is the set of characters. At every turn Jesse does something (or doesn't do something - how hard is it to discreetly drop a bag in a trash bin in a public space where nobody is paying attention to you? Come on!) that is so inane, so illogical, there's no response but to throw your hands up in the air and curse under your breath. Indeed, this is the kind of film that was fun to watch with a few friends - but only because we could yell at the screen together out of bafflement and frustration. Though she admirably puts her all into it, even Mortimer can't elevate the quality of this character.

And then there's Woody Harrelson, who brings the stock character of dumb American buffoon to preposterous levels. He could have easily taken the blithe ignorance down a notch and we would have still gotten the picture. As it was, his character was so incredibly stupid at times, I wondered if there were something wrong with him, mentally. In the end, you can have a spooky setting, but characters really matter, too, and if we don't root for, care about or even remotely like any of them, it's hard to find the film worthwhile.

Movie Preview: Chiwetel Ejiofor in David Mamet's Redbelt

When I'm looking for a movie with strong writing and snappy dialogue, I often reach for something by David Mamet. This spring, the writer/director is turning his eye to the boxing ring with Redbelt, the story of a martial arts instructor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who stays far away from the high-pressure competition circuit - until mysterious circumstances force him into the ring to pay off debts and regain his honor.

Honestly, I've watched the trailer a couple of times now, and I still can't say I fully understand what the story is about. But it's Mamet, so I'm willing to believe it will all make sense when the movie is released this spring. Plus, it stars both Ejiofor and Emily Mortimer, two of my favorite actors, which alone makes me want to give it the benefit of the doubt.
