Group Therapy: My Boyfriend Is Famous

Well, maybe it's still a bit too soon to call him "boyfriend" . . .

For the last 6 weeks, I've been dating a really amazing guy. He's the first person I've met that can keep up with me in conversations about philosophy, politics, art, everything. He's alarmingly handsome (dare I say, even out of my league). Our chemistry is off the charts. He's also kinda famous.

In the beginning, I was hesitant to meet him. But he was persistent, so I gave in and we arranged a first date. Everything I had expected about him (that he'd be vain and vapid) immediately went out the window and I was bowled over by how much I didn't just like him, I respected him. He has done more in his three decades than most people will achieve in a lifetime. Clearly, he liked me too, as we made out like teenagers that night, and he arranged another date for the very next day.

And so begins my new situation: I am smitten with a guy who I cannot bring myself to believe could ever truly like me as much as I like him. Normally I am an incredibly confident, independent, love-em-and-leave-em girl. In fact, I don't doubt it was those very qualities that initially attracted my new beau. But because of his success and because of his model-good-looks, I am having a very hard time enjoying the moment and not feeling like he must just be using me as a summer fling.

Due to his schedule, we can only get together once or - maybe - twice a week. I have no problem with this, and even maintain my distance, letting him come to me to arrange future get-togethers (which he does). I don't want to appear needy or blurt out my feelings too soon, but I have to confess that when we're in bed together, sometimes I'll look over at him and I don't feel excited or happy, I just think, "When he inevitably gets tired of me, it's going to SUCK."

How can I relax and enjoy just dating a wonderful new boy? How can I trust that he's genuinely into me?

Kate Middleton Meets Her Match

While Kate Middleton lookalikes book publicity stunts in England, one of her Hollywood lookalikes just had a very lucky day. Camilla Luddington, a British actress whose résumé is filled with roles like "woman," "flight attendant," and "uppity guest," will play the princess-in-waiting in Lifetime's William and Kate, after much speculation.

Normally, starring in a Lifetime Original won't get an actor more than a second condo, but Camilla's career may have just taken a turn for the big time. The movie, which will cover Prince William and Kate's nine-year courtship, is being fast-tracked, so it will air near the royal couple's wedding on April 29.

I can't remember the last time I watched a Lifetime Original, but I will be there when this airs (no next-day, DVR nonsense), and I doubt I'm alone. Lifetime's counting on it! But what of Miss Camilla Luddington? Her future depends (somewhat) on her performance, but could she just ride Kate's royal coattails to fame?

Kissing and Telling Might Be Kiss of Death For Prostitution

Traditionally, neither the Johns nor the prostitutes wanted people to know about their liaisons. But lately there's something in it for the prostitutes: fame. It's not quite like in India, where wannabe actresses sleep with men as a way to pay their bills. Instead, this brand of prostitutes sleeps with famous men with hopes they'll catch some of that fame when they kiss and tell.

The violation of the code of silence may do more to get rid of prostitution than any law could. CNBC reports one economist's theory: "Fearing that prostitutes might sell their stories, men will tend - at the margin to avoid them. This will reduce demand even for good prostitutes, who in turn might withdraw from prostitution into near-substitute professions such as acting, modeling or PR."

I don't think that equation of prostitution with PR is meant as a joke. And in a way so-called club girls, who are exploring pseudo-prostitution, blend both perfectly. These women promote nightclubs, act as VIP hostess, and sometimes sleep with their clients. This is a promising new model for the oldest profession, considering headlines aren't as salacious when they say you slept with a club promoter, rather than a prostitute.

Would You Want to Be Famous?

Although she'll make an exception for a Vogue cover and interview, Carey Mulligan says she doesn't want to be a celebrity personality. She tells the magazine:

"I don’t want to be ‘known’ - I’m afraid of being a ‘personality.’ On a talk show, I feel I should just hold up a sign with the facts on it - and leave. It wouldn’t take more than a minute, and they’d have room for other guests."

Niche recognition would make the best fame if you ask me. Take This American Life's Ira Glass - he can still go grocery shopping for himself, but he (or his voice) might be recognized by a public-radio fan while he's checking out. Not too invasive, but still flattering. According to a recent poll, however, actor and actress rank highest on the list of dream jobs for Americans, followed by professional athlete. So a thirst for celebrity must come into play for lots of people. Would you welcome fame?

The starlet started her 90-day jail sentence this morning, after tweeting last night: "the only 'bookings' that i'm familiar with are Disney Films, never thought that I'd be 'booking' into Jail. . . eeeks."

Amanda Seyfried Is Famous, but Is She Happy?

We can hardly judge a person's happiness by one article, but April's Esquire interview with Amanda Seyfried makes fame sound like the view from the top is not so big and bright.

It's clear the interviewer likes Amanda. References of adorableness are scattered throughout, and silences are explained as pensive pauses. "Her eyes demand an adjective, beg for a simile," he writes, "Her eyes are winsome, like two parachutes." Yet, Esquire's depiction is more of a weary, young woman than a rising starlet flush with success. Some examples:

On food: I'm on a raw-food diet. It's intense. And sort of awful. Yesterday for lunch? Spinach. Just spinach. Spinach and some seeds.
On pets: Most of the time I just want to go home and throw the dog a stick. Can anything be more obvious than throwing a stick? I need to be needed.
On photo shoots: I learned a long time ago that photographs are not theater. This is not acting. It's pretending. I pretend I'm looking at a man who is looking right at me, a man who sees me as exceptionally clever and adventurous.

Is this a good reminder that famous isn't always fabulous, or just a bad interview?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

I can't get over the number of new DVD releases hitting shelves this week (I know what I'll be doing Saturday!). Along with these three picks, you also have Charlize Theron in The Burning Plain, Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself, Downloading Nancy with Maria Bello, and the political satire In the Loop.

The Hurt Locker

A small film with big word-of-mouth buzz, The Hurt Locker was one of the cinematic dark horses of this past year. The behind-the-scenes story of an elite bomb squad in Iraq is an action movie with depth, as it explores how the members cope with the weight of their high-risk job. Critics love it, and I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't catch Locker when it first hit theaters. I plan on making up for lost time by devoting my Saturday to it - before it runs away with all of the award season trophies. Of special note is Kathryn Bigelow, who is receiving the most accolades for her directorial work.

DVD extras include a commentary and a behind the scenes documentary.

Fame

Most of you said that you wanted to see Fame in theaters, but you can take it home now in case you missed it (or if you want to see it again!). This update of the 1980s musical follows a whole new class of singers, musicians, and actors at the New York City High School of Performing Arts. It feels a little more cutesy, teeny-bopper than the original, but seeing as how I'm sucker for dance movies, I'm adding it to my queue for the flashy production numbers alone.

DVD extras include deleted scenes and the Fame National Talent Search Contest Winner.

One more release to check out when you

Post Grad

Post Grad wasn't a huge blockbuster, but I liked the quirky story and think it would make for a great rental. The film centers around former Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel as Ryden Malby, a new college grad who, like most of us, has a quasi-quarterlife crisis when her dream job doesn't fall into her lap as easily as she had hoped. Yes, the story is predicable and frothy, but it's also sweet - and thanks to supporting roles from Jane Lynch and Carol Burnett, it provides a few laughs, too.

DVD extras include deleted scenes and job hunting tips. I'm not sure if you should take employment advice from a movie, but hey, can't hurt!

Box Office: Audiences Still Eating Up Meatballs

Dancing and Bruce Willis weren't enough to knock kid flick Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs out of this weekend's top spot at the box office. Sony's 3D Meatballs held its place for the second weekend in a row, making $24.6 million, followed by Willis's sci-fi movie Surrogates ($15 million) and Fame ($10 million), which both just opened Friday.

The Informant! came in fourth this week with $6.9 million, and Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself rounded out the top five with $4.7 million in its third week in theaters. Unfortunately, Cam Gigandet's Pandorum didn't break the top five with its debut; the space-set action movie only made $4.4 million.

Watch, Pass, TiVo, or Rent: Fame

I had semi-cynical feelings about the remake of Fame when I first heard it was being cast, but flash ahead two years later, and the trailer has me kind of pumped to see it on Friday. The music numbers look flashy, and it's got So You Think You Can Dance alum Kherington Payne, so I fully expect to be toe-tapping in my seat.

But here's the dilemma: I also really loved the original Fame. The characters were just these fragile, but impassioned people - and there were pirouettes on cars! It will always have a place on my list of dance movies.

I still want to see this new version - 'cause basically I'll see any film that features Capezios - but I'm hoping that it's different enough from its predecessor so I can just enjoy it for what it is: a total guilty pleasure.

Are you going to check out Fame this weekend? Or will you wait until it comes out on DVD, so you can do your dancing at home?
