Patrick Didn't Let Dyslexia Stop Him

How cute are these two? Patrick obviously doesn't let Grey's get in the way of spending time with his daughter Tallulah Fyfe. He spent his birthday taking a ride with her. That's just one of the benefits of working as part of an ensemble cast (which, in case you missed it, scored best drama at the Golden Globes). Patrick's latest film Freedom Writer is about a teacher who helps kids in a gang-infested high school realize their potential. Patrick said he could relate to the frustrations of the kids in the movie. He was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 12 and ended up dropping out of high school. Here's more:

How do you think this affected you?
DEMPSEY: I didn’t really start my education until I dropped out of high school. Because of acting, I had to learn to work through my reading issues. I had private coaching. If I couldn’t read a line, I had someone tell it to me. Once I had it, I could run with it. I still do that. . . . What I don’t like about Grey’s Anatomy is they never give you the script until the last minute. I fight those anxieties every time I sit down for a table read-through. So I’m not completely over it.
Does education worry you, as a parent?
DEMPSEY: It concerns me now with my children. How do I develop them and their learning styles? Reading to my daughter has been therapeutic. I’ve gone back and started to learn to read on a very basic level. I’m reading Dr. Seuss, and I’m healing that part of myself, as well as developing my daughter.

It's great to know that he's turned a negative experience into a positive one for him and his daughter. And he's going to have a few more little ones to read to pretty soon. He and his wife are expecting twins!

Hilary Gets Her Own Star

Hilary kicked off the new year by getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's quite an accomplishment for the girl who slept in a car with her mom when she first came to Hollywood. She says that's partly the reason she was attracted to her new film Freedom Writers. In this true story, she plays a teacher named Erin Gruwell who helps inner city kids realize a potential others had given up on. Hilary was so inspired by the film that she also signed on as Executive Producer. Here's more:

"This is one of those stories that you read and you just get so inspired and it's something that you feel has to be brought to the screen," Swank said of Gruwell's story. "Erin is such a force of nature, she's done so many things for these kids, she's given them a fighting chance."

Gruwell's selflessness reminded Swank of her own mother's faith in her dream. When Swank expressed an interest in acting, her mom moved her and their family from Washington state to Los Angeles with little more than $100 and a car.

The actress attributes her success to her mom's dedication.

"That's what this movie is to me - the power of one person who believes in you and that can change your life," Swank said.

Hilary obviously hasn't forgotten about the one person who believed in her. Her mom Judy was right by her side as she was honored with her star. For more pics just read more

Hilary Writes for Freedom

Hilary and Patrick celebrated the opening of their new film Freedom Writers last night in Westwood. In the film Hilary plays a teacher who attempts to breakthrough to her hardened students at a gang-infested Long Beach high school. Patrick Dempsey plays her husband. Freedom Writers is getting good reviews so far despite its formulaic premise. And Hilary should have no problem thanking her agent at CAA for setting her up with this great film - she's dating him!. We're sure to be seeing more of them together in 2007. The film opens today.

Johnny Depp Shares His Island and Happiness With Vanity Fair

Johnny Depp is on the cover of July's Vanity Fair, and inside he opens up about his new movie, Public Enemies, his family, and his private Caribbean island called Little Hall's Pond Cay. He took one of the magazine's writers along for a trip to the area, sharing details about the joy he finds just being there. Here's more:

On his private island, Little Hall’s Pond Cay "I don’t think I'd ever seen any place so pure and beautiful . . . You can feel your pulse rate drop about 20 beats. It's instant freedom. And that rare beast - simplicity - can be had. And a little morsel of anonymity . . . Whenever I was getting frustrated about being 'novelty boy' and making movies, I told myself, Calm down. I can come down here and disappear. I spent the Christmas season here with Vanessa and the kids. You can feed hot dogs to the nurse sharks in the Exumas - but it's best to not swim when doing it."
On his love of painting: "When I can focus on something like guitar or painting, I do . . . I started painting people I admire, like Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Nelson Algren, Marlon Brando, Patti Smith, my girl, my kids. I painted Hunter a couple of times. Keith Richards. What I love to do is paint people’s faces, y'know, their eyes. Because you want to find that emotion, see what’s going on behind their eyes."
On keeping the island for his family: "Nobody is going to ever ruin the Land and Sea Park. It's like a rare gem, a diamond. I look forward to my kids growing up on the island, spending months out of the year here . . . learning about sea life and how to protect sea life . . . and their kids growing up here, and so on . . . Theoretically, this place can add years to your life . . . Money doesn't buy you happiness. But it buys you a big enough yacht to sail right up to it."
On Tom Cruise's performance in Tropic Thunder: "That's the best I've ever seen Cruise." When asked if Cruise’s portrayal reminds Depp of any Hollywood executives, he says, "All of them."

Patrick to Be a Maid of Honor

Grey's Anatomy has really breathed new life into Patrick's movie career. He was just in Freedom Writers with Hilary Swank and now he's on the set of his latest film, Made of Honor. It's about a man who tries to win over the woman of his dreams by becoming her Maid of Honor. Hmm, how does that make sense? Sounds like a fun romantic comedy but it's no Can't Buy Me Love.

Hilary Gets Out on Her Own

Hilary and her mom Judy look like they had a lot to laugh about the other day while lunching in Santa Monica. Hilary seems to be in good spirits. Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week. Things are definitely looking up from when she and Chad split last summer but she still doesn't have all the logistics worked out - like a place to live. Here's more:

"I've never lived alone before, ever," the double Oscar winner, now starring in Freedom Writers, tells InStyle in its February issue. She also says she doesn't have a permanent address and is hunting for a new home.

"I went from living with my mom right to living with Chad," says Swank, 32. "Now with traveling a lot and not staying any place for long, I have a box filled with floating receipts, makeup I'll never wear, random dog toys and a stack of greeting cards I pick out for friends, which inevitably end up in some storage unit."

But that doesn't mean she's all alone. She's reportedly dating her agent John Campisi who was on the sidelines this week snapping pictures of her when she received her star. Plus, she seems to be taking pretty good care of herself this far! For more pics just read more

Patrick Dempsey on Life

Patrick Dempsey has kicked 2007 off to a fabulous start! He's been out promoting his new movie Freedom Writers, took home a People's Choice Award and tonight Grey's Anatomy returns with an all new episode. Check out a preview here. In the latest issue of Life Magazine, Patrick dishes the dirt on life as a father and husband, getting back into work and his chemistry with Ellen Pompeo. Here's more:

LIFE: In what ways has fatherhood changed you?
DEMPSEY: Now making money is about providing for my children. And being a father makes you look at yourself. You look at your marriage and go "How do I improve this? How do I keep growing and create a stable environment for my children?"

LIFE: So how do you and Jillian work on your relationship? Are you in couples’ therapy?
DEMPSEY: Yeah, we go in for checkups and go "Hey, here’s what we need to work on." We’ve had a very good relationship from the beginning [the Dempseys have been married since 1999], but you run into things you have to work through. And [therapy] is easier than fighting with someone.

LIFE: You went through a 10-year period when it was difficult for you to get work.
DEMPSEY: My agents would say “You have to go in and read for this part.” And I’d say “You have no idea what it takes for me to go in there positive. It takes me two days to get psyched up for it.”

LIFE: Luckily, you and Ellen Pompeo must have had great chemistry during your audition.
DEMPSEY: They didn’t offer me the part. I got it because Rob Lowe turned it down. But first I had to test with her, so she had all the cards. She was very attentive during my audition, and I felt . . . welcomed. Also, she had a Boston accent, and I’m from Maine. I found that endearing.

Courtney Love's Crazy Resolutions

Courtney Love is a constantly evolving being. It's good to know she sets goals for herself. She even decided to bring in the new year with a few resolutions (53 to be exact) that she posted for the world to see on her website moonwashedrose.com. She has since taken them down, but not before Rush & Molly got a hold of them. The list is full of typos and a little confusing, but it looks like she had good intentions. Here's highlights:

* Have a happy satisfied child and family
* sell the pony get a new horse
* try this "thin" anthropoligical experiment - get to my goal weight healthily and stay there
* cahnt for the war in Iraq to cease asap
* chant for Hillary to win
* learn an asian language
* dont peek at tabloids and bad websites, as it absouloutly shatters the Law to make that cause agiants yourself.
* have fantastic sex with commitment and honour with someone whoo treats me as i deserve and dont give my power away
* DO NOT SLLOW MYSELF TO BE A DOORMAT INA RELATIONSHIP EVER EVER AGAIN
* hopefully start another family someday - soon. meet that guy
* know that Kurts spirit is tended to and tend to it daily
* LEARN TO DRIVE
* STOP SMOKING GO TO HYPNI THERAPY AND JUST DAMM WELL STOP
* another year, another year without even wine no matter how hard i try to justify that "wines okay" knw that is the demon voice and put it out of my thoughts
* dont go to nightclubs with 19 year olds
* stay pissed off at the world for song usage
* no more surgery for any reason other than medical until i really need it in my 60s

We know Courtney is trying to stay clean but she sounds a little out of it with her list. However, we do agree that quitting smoking and not hanging out in night clubs with 19 years old is a great idea.
