Dec 4 2009 - 12:00pm James Franco has been mixing things up with his role on
General Hospital, and his character apparently encountered some trouble with the law
considering this mugshot. He's also trying to provoke a larger discussion around his work in the series with a piece he wrote for today's
Wall Street Journal. He penned a lengthy examination of performance art, attempting to answer whether this project constitutes a legitimate example.

what?
1huh?
2I watched General Hospital for him and could only handle about ten minutes. that show is bad.
3I never really found him to be a good actor. He's obviously reasonably intelligent and educated and seems like a nice guy but I've yet to see any outstanding performances from him.
4I mean what the heck is he talking about? I have seen him in a lot of stuff and his acting skills seem to revolve around him crying (I cannot think of a movie where he does not cry). He's either angry or crying that is his range just like that kid who played Anakin Skywalker. He needs to do comedy because honestly his best performance was Saul Silver or Daniel Desario.
5I think what he may be trying to get at is that in this day and age everyone is obsessed with the celebrity themself and not the work they do. Alot of people forget or dont realize that acting is an artform. There may be crap actors or great actors, but regardless-it is a form of art. For alot of people, even celebrities though the media does not portray that part of them, take it real seriously. James, though he may not be the best, is one of those. He sees it for the art form it is and he's trying to get the mass public to realize that.... maybe. At least that's what I think..lol
6^^ hopefully that makes sense. As I re-read...Im not so sure. I know what Im trying to say..lol.

8I think dvdsky81 is right.
9dvdsky81 is so right and I think he's also making a point of pointing out all the hoopla of why is he doing a soap opera. He's an actor and actors act whether it's on broadway, on a movie set, or on a soap opera why is one medium more superior than the next. This whole discussion might be too much for most people especially in a tabloid world.
10I think it's kind of awesome, I wish more actors took unexpected roles like this. I don't watch soaps, but hey, more power to him for spicing it up.
11I think he's doing just what an actor should do which is understand the role and the audience. I wish more people would follow him in that.
12I think he's full of crap so its appropriate that he would appear on gh.
13...i like him. although, i couldn't sit through 3 minutes of GH on a good day, if a good day on any soap is possible...i don't know what he's trying to do, but all the power to ya james...
14General Hospital was so boooooring. I tried for three days to watch it but I could get through 15 minutes of it.
It's just a bunch of people standing around talking about a bunch of nothing. Each background/room was typically dreary, just like other soap opera sets. And I just didn't like James acting at all. I usually like James Franco, but NOT on General Hospital.
15Performance Art! He is such a talented actor! Honestly, i only watched gh for him. The soap opera is boring, but he makes it exciting and intriguing.
16I like James Franco-I don't know him personally so I'm just speaking from an artistic standpoint and viewpoint. I think he is actually a brilliant actor and not to mention extremely good looking-I understand exactly what he is saying, people are going to try and delve deep into why he is doing a soap and yet what they fail to realize is that it is about the art form of acting than it is about the soap itself. I think he is quite intelligent and it's nice that he can do something like this without celebrity getting in the way. I wish that was why people admired celebrities and not just because they like or identify with a character that they are portraying because it has absolutely nothing to do with the person themselves. I know that my little rant is really convoluted, but that's what I get out of it at least. All in all, I like James for the work that he does and he seems to really take his work seriously.
17I think it is incredibly arrogant of him to assume that he would 'interrupt the suspension of disbelief' merely because he has been a movie actor in the past. I'm sure many of the actors in the 'stylized world of soap operas' have done other things, or have done 'making-of' shows, interviews or have been seen out of that 'world'. The viewers of the show may temporarily suspend disbelief during the hour that they are watching it, but it doesn't extend beyond that. Well, unless they truly believe that those actors and that the world depicted in the series is real.
18Unless he came into the soap opera as himself - as James Franco the movie actor, saying only things that he would say and that he had written himself, or alternately as one of the characters that we've seen him perform in other things - he is included in that one hour suspension of disbelief. What he's really pointing out is that he was the only person who didn't do his job correctly and act in a way that was appropriate to that 'stylized soap opera world'.
Love him and he is an amazing actor. "Milk" is a fantastic movie. So is "Pineapple Express"!
19I'd have to agree with this comment 100%.---I never really found him to be a good actor. He's obviously reasonably intelligent and educated and seems like a nice guy but I've yet to see any outstanding performances from him.
The fact that he's on that show tells me he's desperate for attention, because he knows that he probably is the best actor on set, but lets not forget, it's on the set of a soap opera lol.
20First GL was cancelled, now ATWT is cancelled - please if there is a soap god cancel GH!
21Stay classy, James.
