Solid Bright Colors Rule the Red Carpet as Award Season Kicks Off!

We predict that solid brights will be a big red-carpet trend this season. At last night's People's Choice Awards, leading ladies Emma Stone, Nina Dobrev, Kristen Bell, and Ginnifer Goodwin all opted for punchy head-to-toe brights. Nina and Emma both opted for green, while Kristen and Ginnifer went for red and pink. These vibrant hues really pop on the red carpet, and we can't wait to see more gorgeous get-ups at the Critics' Choice Awards tonight.

The Ladies Go Bright, White, and Bold on the People's Choice Awards Red Carpet

It was a fun night on the People's Choice Awards red carpet in LA today. Stars brought the glamour in metallics, bold colors, and bright neutrals as they made their way into the show. Miley Cyrus showed off her glowing tan in a light yellow David Koma dress on the arm of boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, who has been busy with press for The Hunger Games this week. Winner Lea Michele went with a white Marchesa, and Jennifer Morrison followed suit in an Oscar de la Renta of the same hue. The evening's host, Kaley Cuoco, posed in a metallic Badgley Mischka gown while Julianne Hough, fresh off her St. Barts vacation, wore a sequined mini with an open back.

The evening wasn't all about neutrals though, since some ladies opted for bright color instead. How I Met Your Mother's Alyson Hannigan covered her baby bump in a short red Alice + Olivia number. Both Busy Philipps and nominee Jennifer Lawrence chose blue, with Busy in Carven and Jennifer rocking a daring Victor & Rolf. Nina Dobrev, who picked up the award for favorite TV drama actress, stood out in green Elie Saab.

Rounding out the red carpet fashion were a few ladies who went with black. Presenter Ashley Greene stepped out in a custom lace DKNY look and Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale continued the sexy trend with a dramatic Cengiz Abazoglu outfit. Ellie Kemper was honored as part of the cast of Bridesmaids in a simple dark dress, while Vanessa Hudgens mixed things up in a Jenny Packham halter.

And with her hair a bit longer, she is indeed a dead ringer for Snow White, the character she portrays on Once Upon a Time. "It is true, her skin is as pure as snow; so true that just a bit of Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Foundation was buffed onto her face with a brush to give extra luminosity," explained Edward Cruz, the makeup artist behind Ginnifer's look. Pilot Scoop: Once Upon a Time

Believe it or not, NBC's Grimm isn't the only upcoming TV show inspired by a fairy tale. Tonight, ABC will unveil Once Upon a Time, a new drama that explores the idea that fairy tale characters are real - they've just forgotten who they are.

What it's about: Jennifer Morrison stars as Emma Swan, a woman who gets an unexpected visit from a 10-year-old boy on her 28th birthday. When she takes him back to his hometown of Storybrooke, the lonely lad tries to convince her that the Wicked Queen in his fairy tale book cursed everyone in the Enchanted Forest (like Snow White, Prince Charming, Rumpelstiltskin, and so on) by taking away their happy endings. Now they're living regular lives (Snow White is a teacher) with no recollection of their magical past. Though Emma is skeptical, we learn that she is, in fact, the key to making everything right again in Storybrooke.

Where it works: The pilot has cheesy moments, but it also has enough edge and twists to keep me invested. I was happy to see both Ginnifer Goodwin (as Snow White) and Morrison back on the small screen, and they both fit their roles nicely (though Goodwin is a teeny bit bland). The juxtaposition of the characters in their magic lives and real world is also fun to see; the kid in me enjoyed each new character reveal (Pinocchio, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.), and there are plenty more that aren't even touched on in the first episode.

Where it doesn't: The special effects are a little cheesy, and none of the leading men was particularly compelling. I'm also skeptical of how far the show can go beyond one season since the premise hangs on whether or not Emma can send the fairy tale characters back home.

You might like this show if: You still love old-school Disney animated movies.

ABC's Once Upon a Time Brings Magic to the TCA and May Fill Your Harry Potter Void

Fairy tales come true on ABC's new drama Once Upon a Time, which follows the fictional characters we've all come to know and love (think Snow White, Prince Charming, Rumpelstiltskin), who have been cursed and forced to live as commoners with no recollection of their magical lives. Jennifer Morrison plays Emma, the abandoned daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, who holds the key to breaking the curse and finding her true family. Morrison joined her costars (like Ginnifer Goodwin) and showrunners at the TCA today to discuss their whimsical show.

Each week, the series will go back and forth between the magical world and the current world, where the characters are leading regular lives in a town called Storybrooke. Goodwin, who plays Snow White/a teacher named Mary Margaret, called it "incredibly challenging and inspiring" to play two different sides to one character. She said that what was most exciting was not playing two characters, but playing Mary Margaret as a product of Snow White under the Evil Queen's spell.
Lana Parrilla, who plays the Evil Queen and Mayor Regina, echoed that sentiment. She said, "I'm having a blast. Anytime an actor is handed a script where an actor gets to play two roles is pretty awesome. I've worked pretty hard to show the contrast between the two characters. Regina is a much more complex character."
For her part, Morrison is enjoying playing the audience surrogate as the only outsider in Storybrooke. She said, "It's been fun to have that perspective on things, because someone has to comment on how ridiculous it all seems. It's fun to be able to have the freedom to have those reactions as Emma. She has a really tough exterior and for her to open herself to the idea of something like this out there and really embrace it is going to take some time."
Though breaking the curse seems to be the driving force behind the premise, the showrunners urged that it's really a show about the characters and what makes them tick. We've come to know these characters, but Once Upon a Time will explore that "void" in their lives, like what makes Grumpy grumpy and what makes the Queen hate Snow White.
