What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

This week I've got movies from all different genres in my bag of tricks - some romance, some comedy, and a little action. If these don't suit your fancy, you can also check out James McAvoy and Helen Mirren in The Last Station or Alexis Bledel in The Good Guy.

Remember Me

Robert Pattinson leaves his fangs at home to play Tyler, a troubled college student who is grappling with his brother's death and his opulent background. When he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin), his feelings about his family and love are tested as he falls deeper into his first meaningful relationship. I thought the film was a bit emotionally manipulative, but it's a decent love story that's worth a rental just to see Pattinson take on something different from Twilight.

She's Out of My League

Jay Baruchel plays lovably geeky airport security employee Kirk in this raunchy romantic about a guy who - you guessed it - dates a girl that's a little out of his dating range. Kirk's trials and tribulations dating gorgeous Molly (Alice Eve) provide plenty of opportunities for his onscreen buddies to make fun of him, but I found their relationship sweetly relatable. The humor rings true with both guys and girls, and there are a ton of laughs even if it's not on the same level as a Judd Apatow film.

DVD extras include deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and a seven-minute short called "Devon's Dating Show!"

read more. Green Zone Matt Damon re-teams with Bourne director Paul Greengrass and heads to Baghdad for this action flick. Damon plays Miller, an army unit Chief who begins an investigation about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in 2002. He is joined by a journalist (Amy Ryan) as he tries to find the root of the conspiracy. I thought the film was kinda preachy (not to mention nauseating), but if you're a Damon fan who's missing your beloved Bourne, this should do the trick. DVD extras include audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a featurette. 55%

Box Office: Audiences Spend Another Week in Wonderland

The other guys didn't stand a chance. Despite best efforts from Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson to unseat Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton and crew took in a whopping $62 million in the film's second week at the box office. Those numbers bring the movie's intake to a grand total of $208 million so far, making it the highest gross ever for a Burton project.

The new releases of the weekend filled the second through fourth place spots, with Matt Damon's Green Zone faring the best with $14.5 million (pretty disappointing considering the film's budget is estimated around $100 million).

In a somewhat surprising fight for third place, the Jay Baruchel comedy She's Out of My League beat out Robert Pattinson with $9.6 million to Remember Me's $8.3 million (perhaps The Runaways will outperform it after all!).

Rounding out the top five was Shutter Island with $8.1 million.

Green Zone: Heavy on Action (and Preaching)

Meet Matt Damon, war hero. If the Bourne series is any indication, director Paul Greengrass knows how to get a pistol-whip out of the actor, and the two team up once again, bringing that same pumping adrenaline to Baghdad in Green Zone.

Heart-pounding blasts erupt as we open with Chief Miller (Damon) and his army comrades as they sniff out weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, circa 2003. A sniper is firing bullets from a tower and looters run through the streets kicking up dust, but Miller's unit discovers nothing. The government has been providing misinformation regarding the WMDs, and Miller takes it upon himself to figure out what's really going on.

read more. When Miller questions army officials, they act like he's crazy - with the exception of one CIA member, Marty Brown (Brendan Gleeson). Brown confirms Miller's suspicions, and the two begin their own investigation. With help from a Wall Street Journal reporter (Amy Ryan), Miller learns of a mysterious source named "Magellan" who provided information to the press about WMDs; yet, the only person who knows Magellan is Pentagon rep Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear) who swiftly tries to shut Miller down at every turn. So what is Poundstone hiding? If you've ever heard the term "conspiracy theory," you can probably guess - but that doesn't diminish the film's suspense. That's thanks to Greengrass, who uses his fast-paced shots to take us through alleyways and over fences. His on-foot filmmaking is full of shaky camera work that puts you in the thick of the gunfire for an authentic feel, but it also makes you a bit queasy. As we head toward an explosive finish, Damon launches into Jason Bourne mode, and believability goes out the window. Lack of plausibility is OK though when it's an action movie, right? The problem is that Green Zone wants to be more than that. With a plot about Iraq and government conspiracy, you're bound to have anti-war underpinnings, and the script doesn't miss out on any opportunity to drive the moral home. This message is voiced by an Iraqi character named Freddy (Khalid Abdalla), who Miller takes in to serve as an informant and translator. Freddy doesn't help the US for a reward, he's doing it for his country, as he proclaims "it's not for you to decide what happens here." It's a thought that echoes through to the closing credits, and a worthy point at that - but in the midst of what amounts to countless chase scenes, for Green Zone it's a little out of left field.

Matt Damon Perfects His Pre-Oscar Smile Before Sunday's Show

Matt Damon was fresh-faced in Berlin this morning when he attended a photo call for Green Zone. He and wife Luciana arrived in Germany just in time for a romantic date night yesterday following a few days in NYC, where Matt visited The Late Show and hit the red carpet for a premiere. His time in Europe will be short, though, since Matt's heading back to LA in time for Sunday's Oscars. He's up for an award this year, but Matt's already been a winner in the past. We're gearing up for the big day with a look back at ceremony highlights and make sure to fill out Buzz's ballot with all your winner predictions in time for the show!

Toss in The Bounty Hunter with Jennifer Aniston, and you've got a ton of releases to choose from. Which tops your list?

Matt Damon Debuts Mustache at NYC Green Zone Premiere!

Matt Damon had Luciana as a date, but it was his mustache that was the surprise at last night's premiere of Green Zone in NYC. Are you feeling the facial hair - vote on whether Matt and other guys were hotter when they were younger? The evening before he showed a bit of scuff as he and his wife headed out to attend the Black Eyed Peas concert, but the mustache wasn't quite as established. Many of the Hollywood men hopping on the beard trend this season have cleaned up, so we hope Matt's new look isn't permanent. He'll be back in LA next week as one of the Oscar nominees - fill out Buzz's Oscar ballot with your predictions for a chance to win!

Movie Preview: Matt Damon in Green Zone

Matt Damon is officially a Hollywood juggernaut. Not only does he have a ton of movies in the works (a Liberace biopic, an Eastwood film, and as of today a new project with the Coen brothers), and here's a peek at his upcoming thriller Green Zone. Even though I've been anxiously awaiting a fourth Bourne installment, Green Zone looks like a worthy substitute for the time being. (No doubt because it's directed by Paul Greengrass, who worked on the Bourne franchise.)

Damon is back to kicking butt and taking names as Roy Miller, an Army officer on the search for weapons of mass destruction. During his journey, Miller seeks the help of a journalist (Amy Ryan) and gets tangled up with an underhanded higher-up (Greg Kinnear). As a result of his sniffing around where he's not supposed to, Miller soon ends up with a giant bull's-eye on his head. Dun, dun, dun!

While the storyline doesn't sound entirely fresh, you can still count me in for this one. The trailer has that edge-of-your-seat suspense vibe, and with Damon and Greengrass working together, I know I'm sure to be entertained. It doesn't hit theaters until March 12, 2010, but you can watch the preview when you
