    Why Did Grindhouse Tank?
Apr 15 2007 - 6:17am First, we hear that Rose McGowan had an illicit love affair with her Grindhouse director Robert Rodriguez - then, the movie has a poor showing at the box office. Coincidence? Well, it's hard to know for sure, but we want to know - why do you think Grindhouse tanked?

I don't know that too many people knew what a grindhouse movie was before this came out, and it just didn't seem to have too much appeal. I usually enjoy Quentin Tarantino films, but this one held no appeal at all. Not much in the way of plot, lots of extremely gratuitous violence... don't get me wrong, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, those aren't Sunday School Picnic movies by any stretch. But the violence was part of a plot and it made sense.

Besides, one of the above choices also rings true. Who wants to see that kind of movie on Easter weekend? The films that did well were family oriented movies.

i think it was also a little esoteric for today's moviegoers, as well as highly under-promoted. i know among rodriguez and tarantino fans (because i am one) it was a huge deal, but it should have been promoted to audiences beyond the hardcore fans.

Yea I think Easter weekend killed it. If you have time to see a movie Easter weekend, with all of your traveling, and chances are you are with family.

And raging sexuality and gore isn't something you wanna watch with mom, let alone little cousin Tommy.

I really don't think too many people care about the personal lives of Tarintino and Rodriguez. I doubt that is the case (Any one remember the rumor that Uma Thurman was sleeping with Tarintino?) I think this was about timing and no one gets it. I have been trying to find some people to go see it with me and they don't know what it is then I have to tell them and then some of them think it sounds kinda dumb.

I think that all people heard about it was that it was a double feature. It was really long and people can't commit to a movie that long nowadays.
Also the word Grindhouse makes it sound like a house where people get ground up. When really it was a type of movie. Once they explained the background of a "grindhouse" movie I was all interested to see how they could pull it off. Laughing out loud

Also I loved Robert Rodreguiz's film but Terentino's was really long and boring. All I can say to someone who goes is, stay for the first half but the second movie isn't good so do what you want there. Laughing out loud

I don't blame easter weekend because who really treats Easter as a holiday anyways. Also the relationship between Rose and Robert, when doesn't that happen in a movie? Doesn't it usually help things? *shrugs*

I love Planet Terror and hope they make it into a movie by it's self!

I really liked both films but I really think that releasing it on Easter weekend was a bad choice, along with the fact that people today don't know, understand or get what a grindhouse film is all about. It's SUPPOSED to be over the top, bad acting, under-developed plot, etc. like a B movie. There isn't supposed to be a lengthy story line or intense character development.

I don't think it tanked...I just think that most people can't really sit throught something that doesn't follow the true form of credits-beginning-middle-end-credits...and these two dudes made a finished piece that is far out there. Maybe it didn't need a total silverscreen debut. Maybe they should have been more guerilla about it, to sort of go along with the films.

also, you have to take into account that although it came in at number 4 opening weekend, slots 1-3 were taken by Blades of Glory, Meet The Robinsons and Are We Done Yet?, which I am sorry but they aren't exactly cinematic masterpieces.

Whatever, everyone has always been overly critical of Quentin's movies.

I think that it could be that people don't understand the Rodriguez/Tarantino teaming. Recently, the cinematic acclaim that producers, directors, and actors hope to achieve by doing "different" movies has been shot to heck with the genre of movies that I like to call "mindless." With mindless movies, you simply just sit there in the theater eating your snacks and just watching figures moving across the screen with no emotional investment or a care to invest in the plot or characters. This isn't that type of feature, and anything that isn't like the norm usually "tanks" because people can't sit there and think.

I thought it was entertaining and well played. I of course thought it was the perfect antidote to all the Easter BS (flowers, bunnies, candy egg hunts, ect.) that have been shoved down my throat since February!
For those of you who "dont get it", wait till it comes out on video and I'm sure you will change your tune. Its a cool alternative to the *ahem* "comidies" that have been showing up as of late. I found Planet Terror to be hilarious! And just as a side note, Rose's machine gun leg is part of the comedy of the whole thing, not to be taken so seriously...

Three hours in a movie theater seat.. not for me. I miss the good old days where movies were an hour and thirty minutes and not a huge time commitment. I also think the horror genre is oversaturated. Maybe "grindhouse" style movies just really aren't that relevant anymore-maybe we've all just seen too many exploitation/blood and guts movies.
