Cowboys & Aliens: How the West Was Meh

The opening sequence of Cowboys & Aliens sets up what could be an awesome action adventure: a man (Daniel Craig) wakes up in the New Mexico desert with no memory of how he got there. The only memento of his journey is a chunky piece of metal strapped to his wrist. In no time at all, we learn that this cowboy is pretty badass, and we're ready to follow him on his quest for identity. The one downside to having a gripping opening scene is that it sets the bar high for the rest of the film - and Cowboys & Aliens goes downhill from there.

You already know what this movie is about, and it doesn't offer much more than what is promised in the title. Director Jon Favreau has plenty of fun putting together slick action scenes as we watch sci-fi and Western blend into one, but you can only watch cowboys shoot guns at UFOs for so long before you start to grow a bit weary.

To see why the film didn't live up to my expectations, just

Craig's character, which we learn is actually named Jake Lonergan, moseys into a nearby town to put some of the pieces of his identity together. There, he meets a mysterious woman (Olivia Wilde) who takes an interest in helping Jake recover his memory, and causes some trouble. Before he can be carted off to prison, an alien attack hits the town, leaving Jake to join a handful of locals, including a powerful-but-prickly ranch owner (Harrison Ford), to hunt down the E.T.s.

Aside from the novelty of seeing aliens in the Old West, Cowboys & Aliens has built-in box office draw thanks to Craig and Ford. Putting James Bond and Indiana Jones in a movie together is enough to get fans to the theater (and makes for a smokin' hot movie poster), but Craig and Ford have so little chemistry together that I almost felt duped. Both actors are fine playing broody, no-nonsense cowboys, but the script doesn't let them have any fun at all. They're neither rivals nor friends, and what could have been an epic onscreen team is little more than two guys in chaps riding around on horses and grunting at each other.

Lucky for us, the movie has a stellar supporting cast playing characters that you actually care about. Sam Rockwell plays against type as a meek bartender who's out of his element around the tough guys; Noah Ringer gives an effective performance as the wide-eyed young boy along for the ride; and Paul Dano manages to bring a few laughs as Ford's obnoxious, privileged son.

With a plot filled with uninspired twists carried by underdeveloped characters, Cowboys & Aliens has some exciting scenes, but is ultimately too big for its britches.

Harrison Ford made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, and before he got down to business to promote Cowboys and Aliens, the actor tipped his hat to one of his most iconic roles - Han Solo from Star Wars. We don't want to give away the whole skit, but watch as Ford gets a visit from an old furry friend while he's prepping for the show (and then hilariously loses his temper).

Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde Ride Into Comic-Con With Their Cowboys and Aliens

Harrison Ford stepped out with his lovely wife, Calista Flockhart, for last night's San Diego premiere of Cowboys and Aliens. Newlywed Daniel Craig arrived solo as did his stunning costar Olivia Wilde in a floor-length, lace Dolce & Gabbana gown. Their sci-fi Western was a big draw at WonderCon this Spring, and it's no surprise director Jon Favreau picked Comic-Con as the perfect location for the film's world premiere. Thousands of fans turned out for the screening including a few Hollywood stars like Ron Howard, Nina Dobrev, and Seth Green. The red carpet affair caps off an exciting week for Daniel. His live-action animated project The Adventures of Tintin earned tons of buzz during a Comic-Con panel while another one of his projects, Dream House, released its first full-length trailer. The haunting thriller brought Daniel and Rachel Weisz together, but we'll have to wait until the Sept. 30 release to see if their real-life chemistry translates to the big screen.

Jennifer, Ben, JT, and Cameron Make For a Rowdy Guys Choice Awards

The Sony lot in Culver City was transformed into a mix of Key West and Havana Cuba last night for the fifth annual Guys Choice Awards. It's always an unconventional affair and last night was no different, with Cameron Diaz kicking things off in a sexy sheer suit and setting up the evening with a few rules a la Bad Teacher. She came out again later to present Jim Carrey with the Funniest MFer award, and he pushed the boundaries with his acceptance speech. Justin Timberlake preached to the crowd about finding the Holy Grail of Hotness winner, his Friends With Benefits costar Mila Kunis, who defeated Minka Kelly for the crown - who do you think was the hottest at the Guys Choice Awards?

It was Jennifer Aniston, however, who got the ultimate accolades for her sexy status: the Decade of Hotness award. She thanked her yoga teacher for keeping her in such great shape and gave big hugs to all her Horrible Bosses costars, who handed her the gilded antlers. Scarlett Johansson took the stage with her The Avengers costar Chris Evans, and backstage she posed with her recent ex, Sean Penn, who was there to accept an honor with the rest of the Fast Times at Ridgemont High cast. The evening was peppered with shout-outs to the troops, some of whom were in attendance. A group of US Armed Forces men took the stage to present their Troops Choice mantlers to Ben Affleck, and he was humble and thankful accepting his statue. Scarlett was among the ladies who took the Guys Choice red carpet and the show airs on Spike TV on June 10. Awesome New Cowboys & Aliens Trailer: The Plot Thickens For Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig

Who needs superheroes when you can watch Harison Ford and Daniel Craig battle extraterrestrials in the old West? The newest trailer for Cowboys & Aliens looks even better than the first, promising more than just explosions and space invaders. In fact, this second preview almost resembles a horror film.

We learn that this isn't the first time the aliens have invaded our turf (in fact, it seems that they may have even taken Daniel Craig's character hostage in the past). As another added bonus, things get steamy between Craig and Olivia Wilde this time around. The added layers in the second trailer make me even more interested in this movie, so check it out for yourself when you
