Get Leighton Meester's Gorgeous Waves

Herbal Essences stylist Charles Baker Strahan has been working with the brand's global ambassador, Leighton Meester, creating her soft, sexy red carpet styles. Now he's breaking down exactly what he does to get her hair looking so fabulous. So to find out how you can get the style Leighton is rocking, just keep reading.

Charles starts by working Herbal Essences Body Envy Mousse ($3) through Leighton's wet hair.
Then, he blow-dries her hair with a round brush to keep her roots smooth.
Once dry, he goes through her hair with a large barrel curling iron, and tucks the ends of her hair under to create a fuller shape, securing the ends with pins.
To keep everything in place, he finishes the look with Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Hairspray ($3).

Leighton Meester's About to Get Herbal

When you have gorgeous hair and your name is Leighton Meester, what's the next logical step? A shampoo endorsement deal, that's what. The newly blond actress was just named the global ambassador for Herbal Essences, telling WWD that her first memory of the brand is of the "iconic commercials back in the day." (Oh, you mean the ones laden with sexual undertones?)

Leighton got hooked on the brand by her stylist, Charles Baker Strahan, who also happens to be an Herbal Essences spokesperson. But her relationship goes back farther than that. "My mom used it, too - the kind with the clear bottle with the flowers," she said. What do you think of Leighton's newest role? Are you happy to see this Gossip Girl go the drugstore route?

Herbal Essences to Get a Healthier Reformulation

On the heels of a notice of intent to sue from the Green Patriot Working Group, Procter & Gamble has agreed to reduce the levels of a known cancer-causing agent, 1,4-dioxane, in Herbal Essences hair care. GPWG testing showed that there was almost 150 percent more of the toxin present than is considered safe by California law. (It is completely banned in the European Union.)

Procter & Gamble contends that all of its products are safe and comply with California regulations, but it has nonetheless agreed to create new Herbal Essences formulas. In a letter, the company's legal representation has promised "a companywide reformulation to reduce the concentration of 1,4-dioxane in each of the 18 different Herbal Essences formulae to at or below 10 parts per million, within normal analytical variation." All but one of the new formulas are set to begin production before July.

Before you go rushing to read the ingredient list of your own shampoo bottles, know this: 1,4-dioxane won't appear on it. That's because it's a byproduct of the manufacturing process, and the FDA does not require labels to list such contaminants. Later this year, Herbal Essences will have lower levels of 1,4 dioxane - but otherwise, there's no way to tell if it's present in a product or not.

Avoid Naughty Hair This Spring

Have you noticed? The sun is sticking around a little longer these days and the temperatures are steadily rising. Does that mean we should be doing anything differently to take care of our delicate tresses? To find out, I've asked the advice of Herbal Essences stylist Charles Baker Strahan, who has styled the likes of Leighton Meester and Lindsay Price, to name a few.

"Hydration is key as we walk towards warmer weather," advised Strahan. The combination of being out in the sun, flat-ironing, blow-drying, and/or curling, robs hair of moisture, therefore causing hair to react more to the dryness and humidity in the air. "Healthy, well-hydrated hair responds better to heat styling and allows styling agents to do their job more effectively," he said.

To put moisture back into weak locks, Strahan recommends Herbal Essences Hydralicious Shampoo and Conditioner ($4.30 each). "There are three versions so regardless of your hair type, you can get the hydrated base you need," he added. So long, misbehaved manes.

The Chicest Hair Length For Spring Is . . .

Celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan has styled the likes of Molly Sims and Leighton Meester. And now, working in conjunction with the Herbal Essences brand, he's sharing hair tips for the warm months ahead. Over the next few days, I'll be bringing you a few of his expert tidbits, but first, let's get to the long and short of it.

According to Strahan, the length that feels the chicest and most current right now is a mid-shoulder-blade cut with long, face-framing layers that start below the chin. "It’s the healthy haircut from the long tresses that may have been taxed from over styling and growing out," he said. "This length, look, and shape is fabulous for the modern girl because waves and curls still drop below the shoulder as opposed to 'lamp shading' at the shoulder."

But if you're worried about sacrificing length, don't. According to Strahan, the blunt base of this hairstyle carries with it a line that still looks long, but polished.

I just picked this up a week ago and I cannot stop bragging about how well it works! I've been trying to save my hair for the past eight months from dry, brittle, thinning, massive hair loss and seriously... my hair has been paper-thin ever since. Then the very moment I dried my hair after using this two-in-one, I was able to run my fingers across a full set of heavy, thick hair! I was smiling cheek to cheek! Not only that, but after several months the shower drain was not covered in a mountain of hair. It went from a mountain of my hair, to only a few strands of hair left on the drain.
