Hugh Jackman Celebrates His Birthday With the Queen of England

Hugh Jackman arrived at London's Buckingham Palace tonight dressed in a suit and tie for a face-to-face meet and greet with the Queen of England. Elle Macpherson joined Hugh and other popular Australians at the reception hosted by her majesty. Hugh was beaming ear to ear all night long, and it may be that he's still basking in the success of Real Steel's first-place finish at the box office over the weekend. His robocentric family flick took home first place with $27.3 million, beating out George Clooney and Ryan Gosling's political drama The Ides of March. In addition to the film's success, Hugh also celebrated his 43rd birthday yesterday. The date proved to be twice as meaningful this year as Hugh also launched a new company, Laughing Man, on the date. The philanthropic brand sells fair trade coffee, tea, chocolates, and gear and will donate 100 percent of its profits to charity.

Real Steel: Real Predictable

When you sign up to watch a movie about boxing robots, chances are you want to see mechanical carnage, and plenty of it. In Real Steel, Hugh Jackman stars as Charlie, a man who makes his living piecing robots together and sending them to the ring, so the potential for spectacular robotic clashes is high. But when Charlie's estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) shows up on his doorstep, what you get instead is a predictable father-son story that's a swing and a miss.

The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when machines have taken over the role of boxers because humans are hungry for more gore. The premise is a bit hard to believe - how do bolts win over blood, and why would sports fans be more invested in a machine than a human? On that note, the film barely lets the audience begin to connect with the beat-up, underdog robot Max uncovers in a junkyard, paying more attention to the relationship between the boy and his dad. When Max just so happens to share his father's passion for robot boxing, the film establishes a convenient means for the pair to bond. Hugh Jackman was shirtless this afternoon for a dip at Sydney's Bondi beach! The hunky star is in his native Australia to talk up his new movie Real Steel, which opens here in the US on Oct. 7. There was a great deal more on Hugh's schedule today. He threw his clothes back on, unfortunately, and suited up for a photo call at the Intercontinental Hotel to promote the upcoming picture. Hugh's many fans aren't the only ones excited for the movie, since his kids Ava and Oscar are pumped, too. Hugh said of his children, "This is the first time they’ve really connected with one of my films. I don’t let them watch X-Men. Most of the time they don’t really ask me much about my job. They come on set, but it’s just dad; it’s normal. This is the first time they were like, 'We love this!' And they wanna take their friends. They have all the action figures."

Their well-timed vacation got the family of four, and their French bulldog, out of NYC just in time to avoid the effects of Hurricane Irene. St. Tropez seems to be one of Hugh and Deborah's favorite getaway destinations; it's their second stop along the South of France in less than a month. Hugh Jackman caused a stir at Beach Pampelonne in St. Tropez yesterday by showing off his ripped abs on the sand! He went for a swim with his two kids, Ava and Oscar, and later dried off next to their little French Bulldog. Hugh, his kids, and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness are in France enjoying a Summer family vacation. They headed to Europe last week once Hugh was done chatting up Real Steel at Comic-Con in San Diego. He's now gearing up to report to the set of The Wolverine. Hugh spoke about revisiting the X-Men character while in California. He said, "Ever since X-Men 1, I read those comics of the saga in Japan, and I kept saying, ‘Why can’t we do [Wolverine]?’ So, 10 years later, we are finally getting there."
