Who Should Play the New Inhabitants of 90210?

Since we now have an outline of the main characters for the rumored 90210 spinoff, my brain can't stop thinking about who might be cast in these roles. While these new characters have updated traits and hobbies (emo! YouTube!) they are, as some have pointed out, more or less the new versions of the original cast. While we all have our old favorites, I think it's really fun imagining the young stars who could play these updated versions of the original Kelly, Brenda, Donna, etc. Also, some of the original 90210 actors were, like, 30 years old when they played teenagers so I'm going to expand my own fictional casting reach as such.

For example, I could totally see Kristen Stewart (In the Land of Women, Into the Wild) as Annie, the emo girl looking to get popular, and Victor Razuk (Lords of Dogtown, upcoming Stop-Loss) as her adopted bad-boy brother, Dixon. I loved Kevin Zegers in The Jane Austen Book Club and could see him as the jock. Also, this Nickelodeon actress screams Daphne Silver to me. What do you think? Any hot young stars come to mind to fill these slots?

For a reminder of all the new characters and their descriptions, and to tell me who you're thinking could play them,

Annie - 16, is an emo kid and drama nerd who's trying to make it with the cool crowd.
Dixon - Also 16, Annie's adopted brother, smart but bad.
Tabitha Mills - A washed-up, 60-ish actress and alcoholic. Annie and Dixon’s grandma.
Harry Mills - Tabitha's do-gooder son, who graduated from Beverly Hills High in the 1980s and has decided to move home to be near his mom.
Celia Mills - Wife of Harry, an ex-Olympic athlete who becomes a personal trainer.
Daphne Silver - High schooler who hosts her own YouTube series and wants to be a socialite. Related to David Silver?
Max Silver - 24 year-old brother of Daphne. Manages the Century City Mall's movie theater. He is probably hiding some dark secrets.
Navid Shirazi - Teen of Middle Eastern descent who runs the school's TV newscast and is a high school politician.
Ethan Ward - The token jock who gets dropped by the popular kids and ends up hanging out with the rest of the cast.
Naomi Bennett - Hot, rich, and dating Ethan. Starts out as brat but gets more dimensions as the show goes on.

Adam Brody Tells It Like It Is

Adam Brody took his turn on TRL this week while promoting In the Land of Women. The movie didn't do all that great at the box office this weekend, but he's still pretty excited about his first time as a leading man, especially starring opposite romantic comedy great Meg Ryan. He also talked a little about what he's learned about the inhabitants of The Land of Women. Here's more:

On shooting a scene with Meg in a grocery store:
"I said, 'Wait. Let's think about this. What aisles have we been in? Let's think about this cart for a minute. Are we heading for bread?' " says Brody. "I'm not, like, an actor's actor. That's something I would never do. But, all right, we're in a film with Meg Ryan. Let's get serious here."
When asked if women were wiser:
"Wiser? Uh, I think they're more compassionate," returns Brody, whose two-year off-screen relationship with "O.C." co-star Rachel Bilson ended recently. "So, then, yeah, maybe they're a bit more in touch with themselves on average when it comes to relationships. They can also probably be pretty catty with each other."

While it's true that women can get a little catty, we prefer to emphasize the compassionate end of things. We'll let that last comment slide, though, because he's just so darn cute.

Audiences Would Rather Spend Time In Disturbia Than In The Land Of Women

Adam Brody continued to master the fine art of looking adorably disheveled in NYC as he hopped in a taxi. We're loving the Adam overload that's been coming our way thanks to his new movie, but apparently not everyone is on the Brody bandwagon. In the Land of Women tanked at the box office while Disturbia took #1 for the second weekend in a row. We had a feeling Shia was going to be a star, but hopefully this won't be a sign of things to come for Adam - we'd hate to see him disappear into the background like so many other TV stars.

Adam's Not Lost In the Land Of Women

This weekend, Adam Brody showed us one of the biggest perks of being a man - they can wear the same pants and shoes 2 days in a row and get away with it (and look cute, too). In his new movie, In the Land of Women, Adam plays a guy who struggles to understand the opposite sex, but apparently he doesn't have that problem in real life. He said, "I don't want to say I have women figured out because I certainly don't! But there's nothing puzzling to me, I've never really had a problem connecting with women. We all have our own complicated issues, but men and women are really just different in subtle ways."

Adam is clearly showing more confidence than the Seth Cohen we all grew to know and love... now if he would only find his way back to Rachel Bilson! Rewind: This Week's Buzz

If you could recast Ferris Bueller's Day Off with new actors, who would you pick?
This week, I really enjoyed Bjork's new song "Earth Invaders" and Bright Eyes' new album.
Well, I don't know about "genius," exactly, but it's shear something. Also, "Notes From the Underbelly" got to an underwhelming start. "Underbelly" is an icky word, don't you think?.
The trailer for Superbad, starring "Arrested Development"'s Michael Cera, looks so good, while Adam Brody is the only good-looking thing In the Land of Women.
If you could vote one of these scripted shows off the air, which would you vote for?
If you're interested in seeing one of the many thrillers this weekend, Disturbia is good, First Snow is chilling, and Perfect Stranger is a failure.

Adam Takes the Lead

Adam Brody gets all serious in this photoshoot for the upcoming issue of Premiere magazine. The single actor has moved on from his fabulous role in The OC to big time movie guy. He's landed himself a lead role as a TV writer who gets dumped by his famous girlfriend in In the Land of Women. In the movie he's so devastated he heads to Michigan to stay with his grandmother where he strikes up a relationship with the family of women next door. Movie Preview: Adam Brody, In the Land of Women

I was sort of starting to hate "The OC" by the time it went off the air, but it did leave me hoping that Adam Brody gets more work. He's probably not the world's most versatile actor, but I find his laissez-faire hipster demeanor hard to resist.

So, I'm curious about In the Land of Women, the first feature from writer and director Jon Kasdan, whose brother Jake also has a new movie, The TV Set. On paper, the premise sounds a bit Garden State: After getting dumped by a movie star, Carter Webb (Brody) decides to move to Michigan care for his grandma (Olympia Dukakis). As he straddles that vexing line between mature adult and immature 20-something, he's charmed by two women across the street, including a sassy mom (Meg Ryan) and her teenage daughter, Lucy (relative newcomer Kristen Stewart). 11 Things Hiring Managers Won’t Tell You

Ever want to read your interviewer's mind? LearnVest shares a couple of secrets hiring managers don't want you to know.

The next time you walk into an interview, consider the following:

Your wedding or engagement ring? Can and may be used against you.

Those photos of kids on a hiring manager's desk? They may not actually be the manager's children - but the photo is designed to get you talking about your kids or whether you plan to have some eventually.

And then there's the trick that can land some applicants $20,000 more when they start negotiating their salary.

In fact, LearnVest got the inside scoop from hiring managers across the country. Many spoke on the condition of anonymity because their methods were so controversial - and not what you'd find in any company manual.

New research out of the United States Census Bureau shows that women still earn less than their male counterparts at every education level. Although women are outearning men in terms of college degrees and doctorates, our wages aren't keeping up. In fact, the gap only worsens at higher levels of education.

But armed with this insider knowledge - straight from the mouths of those who hire you - you can help improve both these statistics and your bottom line.

I leave pictures of kids on my desk. They’re not even my kids.

Legally, hiring managers aren’t allowed to ask if you have kids, just as they’re not supposed to discriminate against you on the hunch that your child might occasionally have a soccer game. But we spoke to one hiring manager who leaves pictures of her niece and nephew to find out (legally) who has kids. “I’m not allowed to ask about family situations, but if they bring it up, it’s fair game. Kids are a distraction to this job, which requires long hours and weekends. I won’t hire someone who has other priorities.”

How to handle this: it’s very easy to get nervous and resort to small talk. (“Oh, are those your kids? How old? Mine are 6 and 10 . . . ”) Commenting on kids’ photos is easy bait, especially if you’re a parent yourself, but avoid it if you can. Talk about the weather or find something to compliment your interviewer on instead.

I check for wedding bands.

One hiring manager told us: “This is an entry-level job, and the people we hire are usually fresh out of college. If I see a wedding band, there’s a good probability that candidate is going to start a family soon. If I hire her and she goes on maternity leave, I can’t legally fire her, but I still have to find someone else to replace her while she’s gone. When she comes back, I can’t fire her either, so now I’m stuck with two employees when all I needed was one. No thanks.”

This one is an easy fix: leave your wedding ring at home. You're not obligated to share any information about your relationship status, so try to avoid doing so.

Should Mothers Be Prosecuted For Exposing Their Unborn Babies to Drugs?

Could a glass of wine during pregnancy land you behind bars? It might if you live in Alabama. In this upcoming weekend's New York Times Magazine, Ada Calhoun delves into Alabama's controversial chemical-endangerment laws where mothers who give birth to babies with even a trace of drugs in their bloodstreams are not only ordered into rehab but are criminally prosecuted for putting their newborns in harm's way.

In one case, when a newborn died hours after his premature birth, and mother tested positive for methamphetamine, she was charged with a Class A felony for contributing to the death of her child, with a mandatory sentence of 10 years to life. The laws - which are the harshest in the country - were designed to protect kids from "explosive meth labs," but they are now being applied to expectant mothers, and that's where the controversy comes in. Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists all fear that such prosecutions may just be the tip of the iceberg. In the article, Emma Ketteringham, the director of the National Advocates For Pregnant Women, says:

"It starts with cocaine, and then it’s cigarettes and alcohol. How much alcohol? And when? It’s only a matter of time until it comes to refusing a bed-rest order because you need to work and take care of your other children and then you have a miscarriage. What if you stay at a job where you’re exposed to toxic chemicals, as at a dry cleaner? What if you keep taking your SSRIs during pregnancy? If a woman is told that sex during her pregnancy could be a risk to the fetus, and the woman has sex anyway and miscarries, are you going to prosecute the woman - and the man, too?"
