Sundance Snapshot: Bachelorette

There was more than one wedding-themed movie at Sundance this year, and Bachelorette was one of the most buzzed-about. The comedy features a ton of familiar faces, but serves up something a little different from what we've seen in the genre before.

Who's behind it? Kirsten Dunst, Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher, and James Marsden lead the funny cast. First-time director Leslye Headland also penned the script.
What's it about? A group of high school BFFs reunite for the wedding of their friend Becky (Rebel Wilson). There's uptight, prissy Regan (Dunst), who begrudgingly accepts her role as maid of honor despite her bitterness that her less-attractive friend is getting married before her; cynical Gena (Caplan), who's determined to confront her high school ex (Scott) at the wedding; and ditsy Katie (Fisher), who is actually depressed beneath her bubbly exterior.
What did I think? Comparisons to Bridesmaids are inevitable, but the movies really are quite different. For starters, Bachelorette is darker, edgier, and has a lot less slapstick (think coke binges instead of food poisoning). Some of the more dramatic undercurrents go a bit too far, particularly Katie's downward spiral through the course of the night, which don't exactly jive with some of the cheesier, warm-and-fuzzy scenes. Though it's a bit uneven, the stellar cast makes the film entertaining, even if it's not worth a standing ovation.

Isla Fisher left a children's gym in West Hollywood today with her youngest daughter, Elula. Despite the gloomy weather the girls ventured out for an early morning playdate with friends. Isla's been spotted running errands around LA and taking meetings, but it's her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, who's been the talk of the town in recent weeks. Sacha is rumored to be playing Les Miserables' Thénardier, in the big-screen adaption of the classic musical. There's still no confirmation from Cohen or the film's director Tom Hooper; however, major stars like Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway have already signed onto the production.

Isla Fisher Has Her Hands Full With Little Elula and Work

Isla Fisher carried Elula to their car in LA yesterday. The busy mom had her hands full with her daughter and a variety of beverages, including a Perrier, a bottle of milk, and an iced drink. Isla and her family returned to the West Coast after spending most of October in Isla's native Australia. The foursome relocated Down Under while Isla filmed The Great Gatsby with costars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. She took a break from the cameras to celebrate husband Sacha Baron Cohen's 40th birthday with a boat ride.

Isla has since switched gears from the big-screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby to a cameo on Bored to Death, which aired last week. Sacha has his own project in the spotlight as well since his children's movie, Hugo, hit theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Isla Fisher was full of laughs as she left a meeting in LA yesterday. The actress stepped out for a casual appointment in a cozy polka-dot sweater that she paired with a denim skirt and boots. The week started off on a high note Monday night when Isla's Bored to Death cameo aired on HBO. She's expected to star in a couple of episodes in the current season of Jason Schwartzman's and Zach Galifianakis's show.

Isla and her family are back in the states following an extended stay in Australia, where she filmed The Great Gatsby on location with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire. The updated adaption of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic isn't due out until next Christmas. However, Isla's husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, has a new film opening today. He's one of the famous faces gracing the big screen in Martin Scorsese's 3D children's film, Hugo.

Isla and Tobey have their families with them Down Under while they work on the film adaptation of the iconic book. Sacha Baron Cohen's 40th birthday is today! To mark the special occasion, Sacha and his wife, Isla Fisher, brought their two daughters along for a walk in a Sydney park and a boat ride along the harbor. Later, Isla and Sacha emerged with a friend for an adults-only go-round on the vessel. The Baron Cohen-Fisher clan is in Isla's native Australia, so she can finish up work on The Great Gatsby. Her time on set may be extra sparkly, as Tiffany is providing jewels to the Baz Luhrmann-directed picture, including one-of-a-kind headpieces and necklaces. Isla was also just on set in NYC shooting a comedy with Kirsten Dunst and Lizzy Caplan. While doing press for her own movie Melancholia, Kirsten raved about Isla. Kirsten said, "I love her, she's amazing. We had the best time. Also Lizzy Caplan was in the film and us three girls got along so well. We had a great time together. . . . We worked really long hours and really hard, because it's an independent film, so we didn't have a lot of time to shoot. It was very quick."

The family is in Isla's home country following a stint in NYC, where Sacha shot his new movie The Dictator. Isla also logged time on the set of Bachelorette with Kirsten Dunst and James Marsden. In addition to giving Olive and Elula a chance to say hello to their Fisher relatives, the Cohen-Fishers' time Down Under will allow Isla a chance to meet up with the cast of The Great Gatsby. Isla was in character as Myrtle Wilson back in August, but production on the Baz Luhrman adaptation of the classic Fitzgerald book has continued in the months since for her costars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Newly single Leonardo DiCaprio has been in Australia working and dealing with his breakup from Blake Lively. He might not be single for long, though. Leo's already linked to Alyce Crawford, a 20-something who's appeared on Australia's Next Top Model.

Isla is playing Myrtle Wilson in the adaptation of the iconic book, which is being shot in her native Australia. Isla's fellow leading lady, Carey Mulligan who will take on the role of Daisy Buchanan, has yet to be spotted in character, though the handsome Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway have been hard at work already. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire shot Great Gatsby scenes in a gorgeous vintage car today after arriving Down Under earlier this week. The film is being shot in 3D under the watchful eye of director Baz Luhrmann who, like Isla, is from Australia himself, and the reason they choose the location.
