Fab Flash: American Eagle + New Media

Clothes are no longer American Eagle's sole interest. In looking for new ways to connect with their customer, AE has decided to develop original entertainment content through ae.com, YouTube, Myspace, Facebook, and television.

Everything from music, comedies, reality programming and dramas are in the cards, but the first project is a 12-episode series, It's a Mall World, directed by Milo Ventimiglia. In the show, American Eagle products aren't explicitly referenced, but several of the characters do wear American Eagle. Fun!

First Look: "It's a Mall World"

When Pop told me that Milo Ventimiglia was directing short comedies-slash-commercials for American Eagle Outfitters called "It's a Mall World," I had to see what it was about before the episodes start airing during "The Real World: Sydney" this Wednesday. I usually roll my eyes at this kind of thinly disguised advertising, but after checking out the first installment of the 13-episode series, I have to say, it's not too bad.

It's not terribly unique - it has kind of a High Fidelity-meets-Empire Records vibe going on - and of course there's conspicuous AE product placement everywhere, but as commercial entertainment goes, I'd rather watch this than Oleg. Also, Sam Huntington, who plays the lead character, is a total cutie. I hope being cast in "Cavemen" doesn't ruin him forever. To watch a trailer for the series,

The episodes will air on MTV during The Real World: Sydney which starts August 8. Hayden looked great out to support her good friend and costar, but I gotta say that Stephen is dressed a little silly. Like Hayden's look? Check out how to get her fresh summer braids and cute outfit. Frankie Delgado who has been hanging out a lot with both Duff sisters was there with Haylie. I'm all for Milo's outside ventures, but there's been so much yummy Heroes news recently I just can't wait.

Hwae Dup Bap (Korean Sashimi Salad)

As a self-professed experienced eater, Yoo Eatz tells us the story of her introduction to Korean food, and, boy, does it sound delicious.

By the time I entered college, I thought of myself as a rather experienced eater. Born and raised in a multicultural family in the San Francisco Bay Area, I had been exposed to all sorts of foods from the get-go and was rarely fazed by anything "weird" (Chicken feet? Sure. Alligator tail? No problem. Crab innards? Give it to me over rice.) And my young adult self was certain that there was no cuisine I had yet to conquer.

Then I met the guy who is now my husband, and he proceeded to rock my world with the marvels of Korean food. Yeah, I had experienced plenty of barbecue and jjigaes (stews) by then, but one night he took me to a Korean-owned sushi joint tucked away in a tiny Oakland strip mall, and he ordered us two heaping bowls of hwae dup bap that seriously changed my life.

According to my loose understanding of the Korean language, hwae dup bap translates to raw fish over rice, and while it lacks the orchestrated beauty of Japanese chirashi, you can think of it as chirashi's untamed cousin. Everyone has their own version of this dish (my husband remembers his mom making a simple version with just sashimi and rice for church picnics), but the general equation is as follows (from the bottom up): sushi rice, greens, chopped raw fish, fish roe, and a quail egg, drizzled with sesame oil and a vinegary gochujang sauce. It's refreshing, light, but incredibly filling, and it will change the way you think about sashimi. The Japanese girl in me still enjoy a slice of toro delicately dabbed in shoyu and fresh wasabi, but my newfound Korean side absolutely melts for hwae dup bap.

I based this recipe on our spot in the East Bay which included seaweed salad to round out its from-the-sea flavor. If you have access to good quality sashimi and an Asian grocery store, then you'll have all the ingredients you need for this explosive dish.

Interview: Frédéric Malle on '70s Paris, Imitation as Flattery, and More

If you have even the slightest interest in fragrances, you know of Frédéric Malle, the founder of Editions de Parfums. Since debuting 11 years ago, the collection has given some of the most creative noses in the business an opportunity to create scents outside of the usual constraints of marketing needs. This past Saturday, we caught up with Malle at Barneys New York to talk about his Parisian upbringing, copycat perfumes, and influences. Keep reading for the interview.

Su Casa: KatyHarper's Finished Living Room

My husband and I have just moved into our new house, and I've finally finished decorating (for now, at least). The living room presented a bit of a challenge at first, because it's long and narrow. It's completely open to the dining room and kitchen, which is what I wanted. These rooms have a mix of new items, antiques, Ikea stuff, TJ Maxx stuff, random finds, family hand-me-downs, and so forth. I like it, because it feels collected - which it is. I hate it when rooms feel like you walked into a Rooms To Go and shouted, "I'll take it all!"

Trusty Husband and I got new furniture for this room, since the furniture we both had before wouldn't fit. Since the space is so narrow, I had to go with a glass coffee table (from Overstock) so it wouldn't visually take up much space. The oriental rug was my mom's, and I love the teals and rusty oranges in it. The throw pillows are from World Market, Pier 1, and TJ Maxx - I love combining colors and patterns - that ikat pillow is my fave. Our couch came from Haverty's, and the leather chairs are World Market. My mom gave me the framed palm prints a few years ago, and they're one of my favorite things I own.
