Jennifer Aniston joined actors Jack Black, Michael Douglas, Jon Favreau, and more at the American Cinematheque Awards in LA last night to honor her friend and fellow thespian Robert Downey Jr. Jennifer took the stage in a sexy, form-fitting gown to say a few kind words about her long-time friend RDJ. Jennifer joked, "[Robert] never let his career get in the way of his commitment to hard-core, classic Grade A drugs." Justin Theroux, who dined next to Jen at the event, also shares a connection to Robert, having penned the scripts for Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2. Robert stopped by Jen and Justin's table to pose for a photo, but RDJ also stuck beside his wife and mom-to-be, Susan Downey. It's been an exciting week for Robert. In addition to last night's party, the first trailer for The Avengers was released.

The Big Year: For the Birds

I have to give The Big Year some credit for straying from the idea that comedies either need to be raunchy, romantic, or dumbed down for kids these days. The film feels more like an old-fashioned comedy, before the genre became overrun with fart jokes and one actor playing every role himself. Though it won't make you roll your eyes, the downside is that The Big Year won't really make you laugh, either.

As three very different birders (that's "bird-watchers" for you amateurs) determined to see the most species in the span of a year - aka, a "big year" - Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Martin turn in genuine and likable performances. The film has heart and a feel-good message, but watching three dudes check out woodpeckers through their binoculars is about as boring as it sounds.

read more. Wilson, Martin, and Black bring their characters to life with ease, because they're all playing roles you've seen them in before. As Brad (who also serves as the film's narrator), Black is an amiable, happy-go-lucky guy who's looking to get his life back on track after getting a divorce and moving in with his parents. He finds happiness in his new friendship with Stu (Martin), who's going after a big year to justify all the years he spent climbing the corporate ladder instead of doing what he really loves. Both guys are trying to take down the cocky current birding champ, Kenny Bostick (Wilson), whose fear of losing his crown is even more encompassing than his commitment to his wife. The film drifts in and out of each character's personal life, showing how their time spent tracking birds is affecting their loved ones, and more important, their outlook on life as a whole. Brad and Stu are both easy to root for, and even Wilson's Bostick has his moments and one-liners despite some morally reprehensible actions. The problem is that their journeys are all equally anticlimactic. By the time the film reaches December (the end of the year), I wasn't any more invested in the competition than I was at its inception. The Big Year is a family comedy that steers clear of being offensive, but it's more unremarkable than it is amusing.

Steve Martin Does Not Approve of Clooney-Style Pranks

Steve Martin chatted about The Big Year at a recent press day in NYC along with his costars Owen Wilson and Jack Black. The trio, who play birders competing for a world record in the film, have great comic chemistry, and they joked about their antics on set and even confessed to a night of debauchery. The Big Year trailer gives a peek of what's to come when the movie is out on Oct. 14. The three get along great, but Steve in particular was happy their on-set time didn't include any out-there pranks. They said:

What was it like on set – were there any pranks?

Steve Martin: I’m not much of a prankster.

Owen Wilson: Oh come on, April Fool's Day - you wait for that to come around like nobody’s business.

SM: On April Fool’s Day, I change people’s calendar to April 2nd.

OW: It wasn’t really a prank-filled set

SM: When I hear about a prank-filled set, I think, "Ugh, I’m so glad I’m not on that movie."

Jack Black: Every time I do a press junket I always regret that I didn’t pull a George Clooney prank, so that I would have a prank to talk about later. We really missed an opportunity there, guys.

SM: We should have hired a writer to come up with some pranks that we could have said we played. We did have fun and we hung out on the set.

The Big Year Trailer: Martin, Black, and Wilson Have a Bird-Watching Bucket List

The best part about The Big Year trailer is the tacked-on intro, courtesy of stars Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson. It's not that the film looks terrible, but the big draw here is the comedy trifecta headlining the film, and there are more laughs when the guys are making fun of each other out of character. In the film, they star as three men who are a bit adrift in life, and so they embark on a year-long journey together to do all the things they've always wanted to do. Somewhere along the way, things get a bit competitive between the buddies.

I have to admit that I'm a bit confused by the trailer - mostly because the book it's based on, The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession, is about bird-watching. The film, on the other hand, merely references a bird-watching hobby, and instead seems more like a coming-of-age story for grown men. Check out the trailer for yourself when you

The couple were just in Cannes last week on behalf of her Panda and Brad's Tree of Life. Brad did lots of press for his Terrence Malick film, which won the film festival's top prize, speaking about their hectic family life, his religious beliefs, and revealing he'd like to work with Angelina again. Angelina Jolie on Bringing the Kids to Cannes, Finding Inner Peace, and Maddox and Pax's Martial Arts!

Angelina Jolie joined her costars Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman to bring Kung Fu Panda 2 to the Cannes Film Festival this morning! The movie is screening out of competition, but the timing is perfect since she and the family will be sticking around to premiere Brad Pitt's Tree of Life Monday. Angelina looked stunning in Salvatore Ferragamo's tan dress, brown belt and nude heels, and she was cracking up during the press conference as Dustin and Jack showed off their comedic skills. Dustin harped on his own age, joking that he doesn't even remember making the first Kung Fu Panda, so it felt like the first time playing the part. Angelina also talked a bit about her kids, especially her boys Pax and Maddox's love of martial arts, and the theme of adoption in Kung Fu Panda 2 that are obviously close to home for the Jolie-Pitts. She said of the Kung Fu Panda series, "It's the best!" while Jack and Dustin kept the laughs coming. Here's some highlights from Angelina at the press conference:

On her kids and the themes of adoption in Kung Fu Panda 2: "I brought my kids to see the movie and they loved it, they laughed through the whole thing. I wondered whether they would ask me questions about it, but because adoption and birth mothers and orphanage - these are happy words. They're very used to these discussions and they just felt that much more proud that they're a little more like Po. So it was lovely."
On violence in KFP2 and showing her kids violent films: "You have to know your children. There are children that have a better understanding and are ready earlier than others. But for a film like this, I don't see this as a film that's too violent. I think this is actually quite the opposite because the strength, even in the final battle, the inner peace and sending back that negative energy is what wins. My boys are in martial arts classes. Boys are boys and they have a certain kind of energy, naturally. It's been wonderful to get them focused on martial arts to teach them about the discipline and the respect and the control of their own bodies. I think to ignore that that's a part of humanity, especially little boys, is wrong. So it's to help guide them - what's a positive thing, what's a good guy, To try not to [use violence] certainly, but if you have to, to defend yourself."
On bringing the kids to Cannes: "Yes, we're all in France. Our whole family is in France and we're very happy. They're running around the hotel right now, playing games, and making a giant mess, I'm sure. They're having a great time. They love it here. Cannes can be overwhelming, and it can be that you meet a lot of friendly faces and have a good laugh and you also get a chance to see some great films. It's very nice."
On picking KFP2 to appeal more to her kids: "We're all big kids at heart . . . but in many ways I did it for them, and I was excited for them to see it. The trick of a sequel is you have to make it better than the first one, which is hard to do especially when the first one is so successful, and I think we pulled it off."
On finding inner peace: "Especially for people that have children. You wake up and if they're healthy, you know that that's the most important thing, so you have first of all that peace. They also come with a lot of chaos, but we're all searching for it. It's part of the human journey. We all have moments of inner peace and we lose it and we look for it again. But really it's in knowing the people you love are safe and healthy. That's the best."
On her real-life alter ego to all her tough characters: "Certainly my alter ego is who I am 100 percent, which is a mommy who is changing diapers and coloring all night long. I'm sure I'm very, very soft. I've always been drawn to strong characters and I admire strong women, emotionally and physically, just people I feel are fighting for something . . . have a sense of justice and injustice. I've been very lucky that I came to my career at a time that women are being allowed these roles and have such great opportunities for these types of characters."

Angelina revealed her new tattoo's meaning to be the longitude and latitude of Brad's Oklahoma birthplace and also addressed rumors she'd adding to her family.
