Sundance Snapshot: Bachelorette

There was more than one wedding-themed movie at Sundance this year, and Bachelorette was one of the most buzzed-about. The comedy features a ton of familiar faces, but serves up something a little different from what we've seen in the genre before.

Who's behind it? Kirsten Dunst, Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher, and James Marsden lead the funny cast. First-time director Leslye Headland also penned the script.
What's it about? A group of high school BFFs reunite for the wedding of their friend Becky (Rebel Wilson). There's uptight, prissy Regan (Dunst), who begrudgingly accepts her role as maid of honor despite her bitterness that her less-attractive friend is getting married before her; cynical Gena (Caplan), who's determined to confront her high school ex (Scott) at the wedding; and ditsy Katie (Fisher), who is actually depressed beneath her bubbly exterior.
What did I think? Comparisons to Bridesmaids are inevitable, but the movies really are quite different. For starters, Bachelorette is darker, edgier, and has a lot less slapstick (think coke binges instead of food poisoning). Some of the more dramatic undercurrents go a bit too far, particularly Katie's downward spiral through the course of the night, which don't exactly jive with some of the cheesier, warm-and-fuzzy scenes. Though it's a bit uneven, the stellar cast makes the film entertaining, even if it's not worth a standing ovation.

The Sundance Film Festival has been jam-packed with parties, red carpets, and star-studded events since it kicked off witha rip-roaring, blizzard-filled opening weekend. The Bing Bar played host to everyone from Drake on Saturday night to Kristen Bell for her House of Lies happy hour on Sunday. Elsewhere in Park City, Emma Roberts partied with her cast of Celeste and Jesse Forever, while Joshua Jackson caught up with his Lay the Favorite costars. LTF was getting a lot of buzz coming into the festival and was completed just days before it premiered.

Aziz Ansari took advantage of Sundance to schedule some stand-up, and he actually acted as Drake's opening act at the Bing Bar on Saturday. During the show, Cuba Gooding Jr. stormed the stage when he thought people weren't giving Aziz the attention he deserved. Aziz also stepped out to support his Parks and Recreation costar Rashida Jones, who made her screenwriting debut in Celeste and Jesse. Lizzy Caplan and Kirsten Dunst's movie Bachelorette hits Sundance on Monday evening, but the girls caught up beforehand as well. On Sunday, Lizzy joined Allison Brie, Christina Hendricks, and her husband Geoffrey Arend all sat together to enjoy a relaxing dinner at Chefdance. Bradley Cooper rolled into town late, since his film The Words is one of the last to premiere at the festival. Kirsten Dunst and Lizzy Caplan hit the red carpet together to premiere their female-driven comedy Bachelorette at the Sundance Film Festival last night. The girls stuck together for the arrivals interviews and chatted about their own experiences in friends' bridal parties - though apparently there are no crazy bachelorette stories from their real lives. Kirsten's boyfriend, Garrett Hedlund, snuck in right behind her, skipping the press but supporting his girl. James Marsden joked about how much fun he had playing an "unapologetic douchebag" in the film, which apparently pushes the envelope of the dark wedding comedy. Afterwards, the cast hit up their afterparty at TAO.

Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, and Lizzy Caplan were in matching bridesmaids dresses as they filmed scenes for their new movie Bachelorette in NYC with leading man James Marsden yesterday. James joined the ladies for a day in the park, and the cast looked relaxed between scenes, with Kirsten and Isla even linking arms in their bathrobes and sharing a laugh between takes. Kirsten got straight to work on the new project after her trip to the Toronto Film Festival for a premiere of Melancholia earlier this month. Her costar Alexander Skarsgard was also along for the visit to Canada, and there's a connection between his and Kirsten's latest projects - James! James stars opposite Alexander in Straw Dogs, which hit theaters last weekend, and is now teaming up with Kirsten on their new comedy.

James Marsden and Kate Bosworth shared a moment on the carpet together while their costar and her ex, Alexander Skarsgard, posed solo. She was decked out for the event in an embellished Antonio Berardi dress. Kate and new boyfriend Michael Polish have been inseparable lately, but it doesn't seem as though he accompanied her on the trip to the Big Apple. Even though Kate and Alex avoided each other, he still had kind words to say about her work in the movie. Alex spoke to reporters about Kate, saying "She was great. . . . She's a total pro."

Russell Brand Makes the Easter Bunny Hip in the Hop Trailer

When the first teaser for Hop premiered, all we could see was a a little bit of Russell Brand as an animated bunny going to town on a drum kit. Now we have the full trailer for the CGI/live action hybrid with more of the Brand-voiced "E.B.," the little drummer who is in line to inherit the job of Easter Bunny. The problem is that he doesn't want to follow in the family business: he has ambitions of being in a band (this generation of rabbits is so irresponsible).

When he leaves home to fulfill his dreams of fame, he's nearly run over by James Marsden, the human who becomes his new, albeit reluctant, sidekick. The two begin their weird friendship, while the bunny is both pursuing his dreams (which includes a cameo from David Hasselhoff at America's Got Talent) and being pursued by his bunny brethren. The preview is actually kind of funny at times, thanks to Brand's mumble-y humor, though he also makes the beloved Easter Bunny kind of a perv. Watch for yourself when you
