January Jones Gets Sexy Next to Jon Hamm at Mad Men's Big Premiere

The cast of Mad Men came out for the season five premiere of their series at the ArcLight Cinemas in LA last night. January Jones and Jon Hamm were back on the carpet after promoting their Mad Men drama at PaleyFest on Tuesday. January chose a sexy black cutout look by Roland Mouret for the occasion and stopped to chat with us about life as a working mom. She said her costars were understanding even though it was sometimes hard to juggle baby Xander and the filming schedule. Jon Hamm, who brought a Kate Spade clad Jennifer Westfeldt, touched on the changes we can expect this year as the characters head later into the 1960s. 3 Reasons You Might Like Friends With Kids

The comedy Friends With Kids explores the question of whether two friends can have a baby, raise it, and stay friends. The movie follows BFFs Jason and Julie (Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt, who also wrote and directed the film) as they try to pull off platonic babymaking, despite the fact that their friends think it's a terrible idea. Besides the central couple, the movie also depicts several other relationships - that of Jason and Julie's married friends, as well as the friendships between everyone in the tight-knit group. It's more cynical than your standard romantic comedy, so while you might not get swept off your feet, there are still a few reasons why it's worth seeing.

The hilarious ensemble: Four of the cast members of Bridesmaids appear in Friends With Kids: Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Chris O'Dowd, and if you liked them in that movie, you'll eat up their reunion in Friends With Kids. This time, you get to see Wiig and Hamm's chemistry reworked as a committed couple rather than friends with benefits, and where O'Dowd and Rudolph had no screen time together in Bridesmaids, here they're playing a longtime married pair. O'Dowd, who broke out in Bridesmaids, is even more of a delight, using an American accent to play a sweet but somewhat dopey husband. Not only is it fun to see these actors reunited as the supporting cast, the main couple is great too, especially Scott. Though his character Jason is kind of a womanizer, Scott's as irresistible as ever.
The great script: The funny script is worthy of its gifted cast, and the humor goes from goofy to downright raunchy, if the situation calls for it. But beyond having plenty of laughs, it's also very real. The characters are very blunt about relationship realities, and sometimes the dialogue is so honest that it's painful to watch, like when Hamm's character ruthlessly criticizes Jason and Julie for their casual attitude about raising a child. It might feel awkward, but it also feels refreshing.
The thought-provoking plot: Westfeldt (who also wrote Kissing Jessica Stein) has a knack for posing interesting questions about relationships in her films, and here, she really examines every aspect of the situation, like what happens when they date other people. Plus, each character has an opinion about Jason and Julie's arrangement, so you hear so many arguments that you get to figure out for yourself what you think about the situation - and what you'd do if it were your friends (or you) with this unconventional idea.

Jennifer Westfeldt on Relationship Inspiration For Friends With Kids

The writer, director, and star of romantic comedy Friends With Kids, Jennifer Westfeldt, recently shared with us her relationship inspiration for the film (which also stars her real-life partner, Jon Hamm) and her advice for balancing family life with a romantic relationship. The movie centers on two friends, played by Adam Scott and Jennifer, who decide to have a baby together without being in a relationship. But it also features several couples in various stages of life dealing with family, sex, and relationship struggles many of us can relate with. Here's what Jennifer told us about her inspiration:

The couple dynamics in the movie and relationship dialogue come off as very real. Did you draw from you own life?

Jennifer: I think that certainly the film represents a lot of what I've observed. I mean so many people in my life at this point have made that profound life change and transition to becoming parents. And I think everybody handles it a little differently, everybody sort of just changes differently. It was really a tapestry of all of those things that I've observed, and then I just added make believe to it. And certainly none of the people are really based on real people we really know. It's more about observing trends and then putting those trends into various imagined characters.

Do you have advice for couples who are trying to balance family life with kids with keeping their romantic relationship strong?

Jennifer: I don't have kids yet, so I can't know what that really unbelievable change feels like. But certain friends report that they always have a date night, that they always make time for each other. And I think that that's important. It's such a game-changing situation to have a child. Especially in that first year, I feel that's when they're really not sleeping and really not ready for life to be just incredibly different. But we do have friends who just make it a point, no matter what, every Saturday night, even if it's an hour and a half to get a babysitter.

The dapper guys mingled with the crowd and even posed for funny pictures with Justin's date Jessica Biel. On the red carpet Jay-Z was asked whether he and the rest of the men of the year could take down the crew from People's Sexiest Man Alive issue starring Bradley Cooper. Jay responded, "I'll take on the whole entire cast of Parks and Recreation. I'll leave Justin to take care of Glee and Jimmy Fallon could karate-chop the rest of those guys." Jimmy followed up by saying that their one female MOTY Mila Kunis could certainly hold her own, "I think Mila Kunis could take some people out if she wanted to."

Fellow honoree Michael Fassbender smoked a cigar and buddied up to director Eli Roth while Jon Hamm stayed cozy in a scarf and next to his longtime love Jennifer Westfeldt. Michael's acclaimed new movie Shame hits theaters in two weeks and in it he joins the ranks of actors who've gone full-frontal nude in movies.

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt checked out an open house in Los Feliz with their realtor yesterday. The couple was out and about in the neighborhood as well on Monday, when they were spotted walking their dog and sharing a sweet smooch. Jon and Jennifer had a big weekend at the Emmys on Sunday, and the duo partied after the show to celebrate Mad Men's outstanding drama series win. The cast is currently filming their fifth season, and Jon was seen in his Don Draper character on set just last week. His costar, January Jones, hasn't made an appearance since she just gave birth to her son, Xander, which means she also couldn't join the cast to accept their award. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner did share that January was at home with the baby, who had his fingers crossed during the show.

Yesterday, Elizabeth Olsen showed off Martha Marcy May Marlene with Hugh Dancy and Sarah Paulson, and Diego Luna joined Gael Garcia Bernal to debut the picture Miss Bala that they produced. Antonio Banderas attended the premiere of Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In with wife Melanie Griffith on his arm. Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt Enjoy Their Friends With Kids Success at the Artists For Peace and Justice Luncheon

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt arrived at the Artists for Peace and Justice Luncheon in Toronto yesterday arm in arm, fresh from debuting their film Friends With Kids the night before at the Toronto Film Festival to great reviews. The couple were on hand to support the fundraising party, hosted by APJ founder and writer-director Paul Haggis, and stopped to talk with us about collaborating on the big screen. Jon said, "We work together well, it turns out. It was very nice, it was a very complementary relationship. We serve each others' strengths and weakness very well." So, we asked Jennifer, is there another team effort in their future? Jennifer replied, "We'll see what happens with this one!" We also spoke with Paul about his organization and his latest effort to build new schools in Haiti. Paul said, "We've got grades seventh and eight, now we're doing ninth and 10th, so it will be about 120 kids. We know where every dollar is spent . . . and we do things fast. We're renegades. We go down there and we do it." The event, held at a private Toronto home, featured a memorable performance by Eddie Vedder and Régine Chassagne from Arcade Fire and raised more than $600,000 for the cause.
