Johnny Depp Makes Waves in Tokyo on Dark Shadows Opening Weekend

Johnny Depp brought his latest layered up look to a press conference for Dark Shadows at the Prince Park Tower in Tokyo yesterday. He promoted the project in Japan all weekend including at a screening with director Tim Burton on Saturday. Last week Johnny met up with costars Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, and Helena Bonham Carter to premiere the movie in London ahead of its release date Friday. Dark Shadows came in second at the box office, following behind The Avengers, which took the top spot for the second consecutive weekend.

Johnny and Tim Bring Dark Shadows to Tokyo

Johnny Depp arrived at the airport in Tokyo this morning, and quickly changed blazers to hit the red carpet. He and his Dark Shadows director Tim Burton were together for their latest screening, and they stopped to sign autographs for fans before debuting their eighth collaboration for Japanese fans. It's been a busy week for Johnny and Tim. They screened the picture in LA, then had an event with Johnny's costars Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, and Chloe Moretz in London. The Dark Shadows reviews have been mixed, making it unlikely that the movie will unseat reigning box office champ The Avengers in the US this weekend.

Dark Shadows: Should Have Stayed Buried

Bringing back a 1960s TV series about a vampire sounds like a perfect job for director Tim Burton, who became a modern master of cinematic goth with movies like Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Sleepy Hollow. But even with star and frequent collaborator Johnny Depp, the film adaptation of Dark Shadows fails to live up to Burton's previous work. Sadly, it feels more like a lazy, scattered project from someone trying to imitate Burton's style.

Depp stars as Barnabus Collins, a man who is turned into a vampire in the late 1700s by Angelique (Eva Green), a witch whose heart he has broken. After his loved ones are killed by Angelique, Barnabus is buried for 200 years until he's accidentally dug up. Back in his mansion in the 1970s, he gets acquainted with the existing Collins clan (including Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloë Grace Moretz), and sets about building a relationship with them, reinvigorating the family business, and going head-to-head with Angelique - who's been thriving for centuries. There's certainly a lot going on in, but none of it is compelling enough to make a satisfying movie.

He's in the UK doing press for tomorrow's Dark Shadows, and hit the purple carpet for a British premiere last night alongside costars Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, and Chloe Moretz. Also out for the screening was director Tim Burton, who's been chatting up his and Johnny's eighth big screen collaboration. On the press line, conversation turned personal for Johnny. A reporter asked about Johnny's reported split from partner of 14 years Vanessa Paradis. Johnny denied a breakup with Vanessa, reportedly saying, "The rumors are not true. They are absolutely not true."

Johnny Depp joined his Dark Shadows director Tim Burton and costars including Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, and Eva Green in London this evening. The group first premiered their new film Monday in LA, where Johnny also fit in a quick taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live! yesterday afternoon. Johnny talked about several of his famous friends during his chat with Jimmy and even took questions from some of his many impersonators. Dark Shadows, in which Johnny plays a vampire from the 1700s trying to adapt to life in the 1970s, is his eighth collaboration with Tim Burton. Early reviews of Dark Shadows and its off-kilter mix of horror and comedy have been lukewarm, but audiences will have a chance to decide for themselves when it hits US theaters on Friday.

Johnny premiered the movie, his eighth collaboration with director Tim Burton, at a premiere on Monday in LA, along with costars Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, and Eva Green. Johnny and Jimmy spoke about the film and even did a unique segment. Johnny took questions from impersonators - he apparently has more impersonators than anyone else in Hollywood! Johnny also spoke about his famous friends, like Keith Richards, the late Hunter S. Thompson, and even Marilyn Manson. Johnny admitted that Marilyn came to perform at his son Jack's recent 10th birthday party.

Johnny Depp had the company of his Dark Shadows costars, Michelle Pfeiffer, in Lanvin, a Tom Ford-clad Eva Green, and Chloe Moretz last night for their big LA premiere. Director Tim Burton was on hand as well, and he stopped to pose for a handful of photos with his frequent collaborator Johnny. Johnny and Tim's latest effort, the story of a vampire who comes back to life after being buried for 200 years, is out in the US on Friday, May 11.

On the black carpet, Johnny spoke about what scares him. He said, "Dancing. The idea of dancing is the only thing that scares me. I'd rather fight a buzz saw than dance." Johnny apparently even invited Steven Tyler to the premiere! Steven, who planted a kiss on Cloris Leachman in full view of the photographers, said Johnny personally called to extend an invitation. Steven said that Johnny pleaded, "Come to the premiere and come jam with us after."
