What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Already seen all the big-budget Summer blockbusters and looking elsewhere for your movie fix? Lucky for you it's Tuesday, which means I've got a couple of new DVD releases to share - and one of them is very near and dear to my heart.

Kick-Ass

Aaron Johnson plays a teenage underdog who takes on the town bad guys with a quirky superhero disguise (a green wetsuit) and some DIY marketing (MySpace). His pseudonym of choice: Kick-Ass. But when he gets in a little over his head, a father-daughter assassin duo named Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) step in. The film is violent, bloody, and a lot of fun, but I was especially enamored by the young Moretz, who has a mouth like a sailor and the skills of The Bride. DVD extras include a director commentary and a look at the comic that inspired the film.

The Ghost Writer

Released in the midst of the Roman Polanski controversy, the director's political thriller stars Ewan McGregor as a ghostwriter who agrees to write the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan). What seems to be an amazing opportunity quickly goes awry, leaving the ghost in the center of the PM's scandal, secrets, and danger. Critics noted that the film isn't Polanski's best but is still stylish enough to take a look. The film also garnered Polanski an award at the Berlin Film Festival. DVD extras include an interview with Polanski and featurette.

I've been reminiscing to sift through my favorites so far, and though it wasn't easy, I've come up with my top six. Box Office: Dragon Swoops In During a Slow Weekend

After last week's close call with Kick-Ass, the animated family film How to Train Your Dragon came out on top this time with $15 million. Unfortunately, the win is somewhat diminished by the fact that this weekend's box office had the lowest intake of the year thus far (perhaps everyone was playing outdoors?). Even the star power of Jennifer Lopez in newcomer film The Back-up Plan couldn't muster up big figures. It came in second with a modest $12.2 million.

Taking third was Date Night with $10.6 million, while The Losers debuted in its first week with a disappointing $9.6 million for fourth place. Following closely behind was Kick-Ass which dropped from No. 1 to No. 5 with $9.5 million.

Would You Decorate With Guns?

Sometimes being bad can look so good, like villain Frank D'Amico's devilishly sleek pad in the comic book-based Kick-Ass. A couple standouts for me were the two oversized Andy Warhol Gun prints, which faced each other in D'Amico's office. Cleverly placed above facing seating, they were an in-your-face reminder of the room's violent mood. I've pointed out weaponry in the home before, but are massive gun prints too villainy in the safe haven we call home?

The Top 5 Juiciest Things I Learned From the Kick-Ass Cast

Now that the world has seen controversial comic-based movie Kick-Ass, I thought I'd revisit some of the more interesting things that the cast told me when we chatted at Wondercon. Here are the five best tidbits from my interviews with Chloe Moretz, Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Clark Duke!

5) Chloe Moretz got into the action: "I did all my own stunts, except for running up the wall and crazy stuff like that."

4) If he were offered another action film, Christopher Mintz-Plasse would like to portray a girls' toy: "Is Bratz considered an action movie? I'd want to be one of the Bratz girls."

Box Office: Dragon Makes a Comeback

Despite its lack of superheroes and weapons, Dreamworks's How to Train Your Dragon managed to regain the top spot at the box office with $20 million. It's been a few weeks since it came in at number one, but it looks like the family fave was a bigger draw than my pick, Kick-Ass, which came in closely behind it at No. 2, earning $19.8 million.

Last week's winner, Date Night, came in third with $17.3 million, followed by new release Death at a Funeral, which pulled in $17 million. The top five was completed by blockbuster Clash of the Titans, which fell to $15.8 million.

UPDATE: Final tallies calculated Monday show that Kick-Ass actually beat Dragon for the No. 1 spot!
