Jessica Alba Talks Trading Her Sexy Image For Motherhood in Marie Claire

Jessica Alba shows some skin in a Versus dress on the cover of Marie Claire's June issue, which hits newsstands Tuesday, May 22. The mother of two turned 31 last month and seems to enjoy the juggling act that comes with motherhood and stardom. She recently stepped out in a Michael Kors number at the Met Gala in NYC and mingled with other famous faces at the star-studded White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington DC. Jessica will also appear in a new film, A.C.O.D., set to be released sometime in 2012. In the magazine, Jessica opens up about her early career image, how she has changed since becoming a mom, and her former sexy self. Here's more from Jessica Alba in Marie Claire:

On her early career image: "I had a show, Fox’s Dark Angel, that premiered when I was 19. And right away, everyone formed a strong opinion about me because of the way I was marketed. I was supposed to be sexy, this tough action girl. That’s what people expected…I felt like I was being objectified, and it made me uncomfortable. I wanted to be chic and elegant!"
On how she has changed since motherhood: "Now that I’m older, I’ve learned how to own it, but I’m still not very overt. There are some women who dress for men. I dress for myself. It took me some time to get here. Being a mom and feeling grown-up have helped. Now if I’m going to wear something short, it has to have a high neck or a little sci-fi toughness to it, an edge."
On her former sexy self: "I like to get positive attention. But if I have a choice between someone noticing in a negative way what I’m wearing and going, What was she thinking? or someone not noticing what I’m wearing, I would rather not make a statement at all and just have a good conversation instead."

Leighton Meester Reflects on Her "Crazy" but "Happy" Childhood in Marie Claire

Leighton Meester covers Marie Claire's new April issue. The Gossip Girl star also has That's My Boy with Adam Sandler arriving in theaters this June. Leighton appears in the magazine to chat up the Sandler comedy, but also got personal in her chat. She spoke about her tumultuous childhood, and how she worried about her family having enough money for necessities. Leighton also touched on getting married someday, saying she's not sure it's something she'll definitely do. Here are highlights from Leighton in Marie Claire:

On her childhood: "My family has a crazy history. Probably the craziest I’ve heard of. . . I look back now and I see it in a nice light. It wasn’t uncomplicated. But I played outside. I went to the beach. There were happy, fun times."
On tough times as a kid: "I couldn’t relate to kid stuff. 'Jimmy doesn’t like me!' Who cares? I was worried we didn’t have gas money or food. Those were my concerns."
On dating: "I never had a boyfriend until I was 18. It’s nice, I guess – when you like them. But it isn’t the most important thing. I’m not sure I ever want to get married. The only time a relationship is good is when you really love them. I don’t want to hang out with some guy I just like."

On working with Ryan Gosling: "He’s your dream costar. I have never felt so creatively satisfied on a film."
On her diet and workout routine: "I run four to five times a week, mixing it up among distance running, intervals on a track, and running uphill on a treadmill. I don't eat meat and stopped eating chicken - my skin has gotten a lot better."
On her body image: "What I tell girls is what they don’t like about themselves now, they will probably end up loving as an adult, because that’s what happened to me. When I am complimented on things that I didn’t like when I was 13, like my overbite and my mole, that’s when you realize that your imperfections are why people love you."

The director of In the Land of Blood and Honey spoke with the magazine about her first-ever time behind the camera, then segued into more personal topics. Angelina spoke about how Brad Pitt is more than just the love of her life, and also said she "could end up pregnant" and further expand their family. Additionally, Angelina spoke about how she's really a homebody and doesn't have too many female friends. Angelina Jolie told Marie Claire:

On her bond with Brad: "[Brad] has expanded my life in ways I never imagined. We built a family. He is not just the love of my life, he is my family. I hold that very dear. I suppose what I’ve learned from Brad is to be able to have the kind of family whose happiness and well-being comes before your own. I’m very, very grateful to have such a loving family, and I wouldn’t have that without him."
On directing so many women in her movie: "It was nice for me to play with other girls; I don't really have girlfriends in movies, if you've noticed . . . Well, I have a few girlfriends. I just . . . I stay home a lot. I'm just not very social. I don't do a lot with them, and I'm very homebound."

It was off in the tropics that Reese showed her stomach tattoo, which apparently represents her new life and love. She reflected on her life between marriages in her interview, and said things feel easier now that she has Jim by her side. Here are some highlights:

On single parenthood: "I was hard on myself when I got divorced. And until I got remarried, I don't think I realized how stressed I was. I feel so much relief. I don't think I realized how stressed I was being a single parent. It was really, really stressful. It's not easy on anybody."
On marrying Jim: "I got lucky. I did. I got very lucky, and he's so wonderful with the children. I'm very blessed."
On feeling braver after 30: "I always had a lot of confidence when I was younger, and then I think I got a little nervous in my 20s. But now I feel better. Now I'm in my 30s, totally better. A little more confident again. Not as scared."

The comedy, which also stars Christina Hendricks, Pierce Brosnan, and Busy Philipps, tackles the challenges that working moms face as they try to juggle it all. It's a theme SJP can relate to as a mom of three and a movie star. She talked about striking a balance in her working and personal life in the magazine and also shared some of the ways she maintains a sense of normalcy despite her celebrity status. She said:

On why she never wanted fame: "I never wanted to be a celebrity; I never wanted to be famous. And in my daily life, I work really hard to not trade on it in any way. I am so desperately worried about anybody saying, 'She cut in line' or 'She took our table' or 'She got out of jury duty' or 'She doesn't do her own grocery shopping.' The things that bother me are counter to who I am and the way I live. It's not like it's hard to be decent and respectful and well-behaved. I do wait in line, and I do take the subway, and I do do my own grocery shopping, and I do take the kids to school."
On balancing her many commitments: "I love, love, love being an actor. It's still the hardest and scariest thing I do, outside of parenting. But I've always been someone who likes a busy day. I love the opportunities, and if I can manage my time and the children are okay and we're okay, it's hard to say no."
On protecting her marriage to Matthew Broderick: "We don't talk about our marriage a lot, which is probably wise. There are so many other things in our lives that take precedence over the splitting of the atom of our marriage."

On how she spent her first paycheck: "I spent my first paycheck on a vintage Mercedes. I was struggling a little in New York, working as a waitress at Jackson Hole, but not really getting any consistent acting work. Then I moved out here to Los Angeles, and I started getting pilots and working pretty regularly. I still didn't make any decent money until I got on Friends."
On what she'd do if she didn't act: "If I weren't an actor; I'd be: Maybe an interior designer. I love seeing a house and thinking about how it should be redone or restored. I spent a lot of time doing my current house, and it's beautiful. . . . It's like a beautiful work of art, and I'm very proud of it."

Kate, who is expecting her second child this Summer, opened up to the magazine about how pregnancy feels different this time around. Kate Hudson is currently in London with her husband-to-be, Matthew Bellamy, and her son, Ryder, and her dad Kurt Russell recently gave the Muse frontman his stamp of approval, saying he's a "wonderful guy." Ginnifer also has a wedding in her near future and shared her excitement about starting a family with her fiancé, Joey Kern. The costars further discussed Hollywood's beauty standards and staying in shape, with Kate chatting candidly about her struggle to shed her baby weight after Ryder's birth. Here are some highlights:

Kate on how pregnancy is different this time around: "I was so sick the first trimester that every time I tried to read, I couldn't concentrate. So I started brainlessly watching TV in the fetal position on my couch. It was brutal. I only just started getting a bigger appetite. I'm eating, but I like healthy foods in this one."
Ginnifer on her wedding plans: "I'm so ready. I want a life full of little Joeys. I'm only holding off until after my wedding for vanity purposes. I just want to be able to fit into whatever dress I pick out."
Kate on losing weight postbaby: "Let me tell you something. It's an emotional roller coaster, having to lose weight. I gained so much - I was 185 pounds at the end. Ginnifer on her natural figure: "I am genetically predisposed to be a bigger girl than I am. If I didn't live in Hollywood, I would be. I have very real hips and a real Southern woman's ass."
Ginnifer on why she still uses Weight Watchers: "I've never had body issues, and I've never had an eating disorder. Most of the people I know are on the program for health reasons. And yes, some of them are slim women who want to stay slim."
